Hi!

Valentino has a fraying caudal fin with whitening at the end. It is only in one area but his veins are dialated. I have been doing salt dips instead of leaving salt in the tank due to val having dropsy previously. He has never relapsed since the original time. I have not cleaned my filters in 5 months, that may be part of the problem. I also added a large plastic hollow log to the tank about 2-3 weeks ago. It has an airstone inside though. Marmalade is not having any problems though other than boyancy problems, but he has always been like that. I will include pics in a sec.

Hope Valentino feels better!!!!

Hi! I‘m sorry your fish isn‘t doing well. I am sure a mod will be here to help soon.

Good luck! I wish you a quick recovery!!!

Thank you so much both of you! I have never had this happen before, so this condition is new to me!

I agree the filter cleaning might be part of the issue. Since you are currently doing a round of prazi it seems you are doing what you need to do. You can post pics daily if you want to update us on the tail.

How many salt dips did you do and at what concentration?

I'm sorry your Valentino isn't looking to good at the moment. I hope he gets to looking better soon during his prazi treatments.

Even though filters hold a lot of good bacteria it can also host the bad. I clean my hob filter once a month and my media if not every 5 days when I do my water changes... then it will be every 10 days for me.

I have done two but they were not consistant. I think it was at 3%. Is there any way i could just add salt to the tank without it being harmful to val? Maybe 0.1%?

Okay that makes sense. How often should i clean two large cansisters? It would be a pain to unhook the tubing every week.

If you do add 0.1% do it with the pantyhose method so that it slowly dissolves over time. That may give your val so e time to adjust.

Unless the fish are struggling with the prazi I don't think you will need salt. I think clean water will heal issues over time.

Edit: canister cleaning is once a month and make sure to do them at different times. :)

I finally cleaned the filters on sunday. I just cleaned both to get on track to alternate once a month. His tail does not seem to be improving, the ends are starting to split. I admit, I have not been consistant with the prazi treatments. I have been very busy lately with school and a new job. Is there any other treatments that could help his tail? Also marma seems totally fine-- his fins are looking great.

Can you take a pic to update the conditions and review the adjusted routine you did due to busyness? (We all get busy and it is understandable but how the treatments were administered will affect future advice :) )
