How is this happening?

Normal Canister filters work like:

___________ <-- Water in.

/ \

| |

| |

| |

| |

| |

| |

|___________|----> Water out.

But my filter is working this way!

___________ ---> Water out

/ \

| |

| |

| |

| |

| |

| |

|____________|<-- Water in.

Why? I did kinda open up the head part of the Eheim 2213/2215 and put them back in.

Eheim Classic filters are a bottom to top system if you will. Basically gravity draws water into the canister, and the pump pushes it back up the outflow hose into the aquarium. If you read the instructions it tells you the filter won't operate if placed above water level. :)

Yeah my filter (an API Filstar) is like the second pic. My Fluval is designed the same way.

A coworker uses an Eheim canister filter that sits inside of the tank, and swears by it. I didn't even know such a thing existed before talking to him. I prefer the external filters, though, for both personal preference and increased swimming room.
