Here's my favourite. They carry fresh and saltwater fish and supplies and are very knowledgeable about all kinds of fish including goldfish. They only have small numbers of goldfish at a time, but the quality is very good. They've also recently started carrying supplies for lizards, birds and small rodents as well as carrying those pets for sale and have hired an entire additional staff who are knowledgeable about those critters.

I'll add to the Perth, WA side :) I do quite a lot of fish store exploring, perks of being your own boss ;)

Some may already be on the list, but may have actually moved as well. I've found that most good places are north of the river...I'm a southie :P

City Farmers - Chain pet store with your usual variety of goldfish. I have come across some Ranchu, but not very HQ as a lot of them had kinks in their backs or were most probably hybrids (mixed with Lionhead). I frequent the Willetton store and if you ask nice enough they'll let you know when their new shipments are coming in, or you can order some.

  • 171 High Rd, Willetton WA 6155
  • 3/378 South St, O'Connor WA 6163

Pet Barn - Chain pet store with the usual variety. Friend sent a complaint to them about the state of the fish tanks. A lot of dead and unhealthy fish. Hopefully they'll rectify this soon!

  • 248 Leach Hwy, Myaree WA 6154
  • Unit 2/816 Beeliar Dr, Success WA 6164

Pet City - Small chain pet store with the usual variety, but now and then you might find some HQ goldfish.

  • 6/113 High Rd Willetton WA 6155
  • 30/87 Armadale Rd, Jandakot WA 6164
  • 491 Marmion St, Myaree WA 6154

Pet Magic - Chain pet store with the usual variety. Now and then you might see some HQ ones, eg. Shubunkins, Bristols, Orandas, etc. Went into the Bibra Lake one last week and they had a big Oranda/Ranchu in a tank (couldn't see cos it was high up and I'm short) looked like it was close to pine-coning from what I could see though EEP!!!

  • 1/10 Discovery Dr, Bibra Lake WA 6163
  • 8/1500 Albany Hwy, Cannington WA 6107

Perth Aquarium & Display Centre - Haven't been here for a while. Went when they were still in Myaree, but they've recently relocated. They have plenty of tropical fish, but not much variety on Goldfish.

  • Unit 9/48 Prindiville Dr, Wangara, Perth WA 6065

Aquotix - This is a family run business (I think) and they are fish specialists. This place is my usual stomping ground when looking for tropical fish/plants for my tanks and some accessories. They have a whole section dedicated to ponds, goldfish and koi. Wide variety of goldfish with mixed qualities. Staff are quite friendly and happy help if you ask the right questions :)

  • 4/176 Bannister Rd, Canning Vale, Perth WA 6155

Vebas Aquariums - Also family run I believe. They specialise more in marine and freshwater fish (especially cichlids). There's a corner for goldfish and koi, with your usual variety, but not much compared to other places. I've had mixed experiences here where some staff were a little stand off-ish, some were friendly and others just didn't have a clue what they were doing. Accessories are cheap here though...

  • 5/1 Zeta Crescent, O'Connor WA 6163

Living Ponds - I found this to be a quiet place, but they have a large range of aquatic plants for the aquarium or pond. They have a section full of goldfish and koi! A good variety to choose from or to just oggle at.

  • 363 Shepperton Rd, East Victoria Park WA 6101

The Bird & Fish Place - A place that's not hard to miss, just look for the dinosaurs. Went to check this place out one afternoon and came home with my Fantail, Sago. They've got a variety of tropical fish. There's an outdoor area where the goldfish and koi are. They have a lot of Calico Fantails, Comets, Moors and Shubunkins. I still can't get over all the animal statues though...

  • 12 Lewis Rd, Wattle Grove, Perth WA 6107

Woodvale Pond & Lily Farm - I love this place! They have plenty of koi fish here, and big ones too! But yes, they also have a variety of goldfish too :) As the name says, they have an abundance of pond/aquarium plants. The staff are really friendly and really helpful too. Also, it's a good place to just go and oggle at the fish.

  • 26 Woodvale Dr, Woodvale, Perth WA 6026

That's all for now. There are a few other places I have yet to explore and when I do I shall add them :) Hope this is helpful to those on the west coast!

In Adelaide. I like these

Seaview Aquariums

Ok this one can be hit and miss at times, depends who you get I guess. About 80% of the time I'm impressed when I go there, but there have been times when things haven't looked good

237 Anzac Hwy, Plympton SA 5038
(08) 8371 0380

Hilltop Pets and Aquariums

They usually have a really nice selection of Goldies, it's really hard for me to resist buying every time I go there. They sell a lot of things that I haven't been able to find anywhere else, like Tri Sulfa, Prazi, Axolotl Pellets (I know not goldfish for the last one) Their prices are pretty reasonable and I love their take on bettas/fighting fish - they have a sign up saying they need to have a heater and the display tanks are not suitable as a permanent home :) They also have tons of accessories for other pets.

43 Main South Rd., O'Halloran Hill SA 5158
(08) 8322 1888

Elite Fish

And ok, I've never actually being to this last one myself as it's a good hour away from where I live, but I am dying to go there, I've seen their goldies at the show and on their facebook page and they are to die for. Their fish look absolutely stunning and I've heard nothing but good things about them. They have tropicals as well as saltwater fish as well. I'm dying to go there but I know I have to hold off until I have a bigger tank since I wont be coming home empty handed, that's for sure. They also custom make tanks.

Brisbane shops I have purchased from.

Aquarama Aquariums

Stafford Rd, Stafford Qld 4053

(07) 3856 6600

These guys have a lot of variety for goldfish, tropicals, other cold water fish, and marines. They have visually healthy stock, however it's best to find out when they get their new stock since that's when they have the best goldfish variety. Their pricing's are a quite expensive for products, however they do stock a lot.

Atlas Aquariums

270 Rode Road, Stafford Heights Qld 4012

(07) 3256 3774

Also stock a wide variety of fish however not many products or product variety. Pricing is reasonable and they are a knowledgeable store.

Pet barn

Chain stores all over brisbane, generally with nice fish stock, however some stores are more reputable than others. I generally do not shop here for goldfish, but get my products from pet barn since they stock variety and have reasonable prices. They are also very good at ordering products in if they don't stock it. They offer a rewards system.

City farmers

561 Gympie Rd, Kedron Qld 4031

(07) 3350 4490

I really enjoy looking at their goldfish stock, and tropical selection. They are reasonably priced but their goldfish can sometimes be a hit or miss. They have great tanks and decor for sale as well, and are reasonably priced for most products. They offer a good rewards system.
Fishchick Aquatics
17/478 Ipswich Rd, Annerley Qld 4103
(07) 3848 9585
Reputable show-betta importer, offering high quality bettas for very reasonable prices. All of her other stock look very healthy and the tanks are always presented well. I highly advocate buying bettas from her, not only due to their quality and overall health, but because of her care and presentation of them in reasonably sized, room-heated tanks, and quarantining systems. Goldfish stock, however, is very expensive.

Northside of Brisbane is covered :) now for the Southside. In my experience, quality goldfish are found based on luck depending on the shipment. Many of the pet stores especially the chain ones order their fish from Bayfish (http://www.premierpet.com.au)

and from Aquarium Industries (http://www.aquariumindustries.com.au).

If you check out the Aquarium Industries site, they list all of the current stock they have as well as some videos of their stock. If you like them, you can check out their list of pet stores and they can order them in for you as you can't purchase directly from the site. I haven't personally done it myself, but have got in discussions with pet store about getting some and they're happy to do so :)

Now for my list to be added for Brisbane.

City Farmers

I think I have been to every single one in SE Queensland EXCEPT for the one at Caboolture. The best ones for goldfish I've found are the ones at Capalaba and Beenleigh.

Capalaba

Old Cleveland Rd, Capalaba QLD 4157

The guys who work in the fish section there are pretty cool and knowledgeable about their fish. Sometimes they get their goldfish had selected from the suppliers and so their quality is better.

Beenleigh

3/137-141 George St, Beenleigh QLD 4207

They have a massive 8x2x2 goldfish display tank. It's cool. I enjoy just looking at the massive comets and shubunkins they got in there. They say they always get comments from customers on how big they are or if they do anything different to them as they are so big. They are very knowledgeable in terms of goldfish keeping and they also have decent stock sometimes also hand selected from the supplier.

Independent stores

Pet City

224 Wishart Rd, Mt Gravatt QLD 4122

Can have some really good quality goldfish from time to time but be expected to pay big $$$ for them. Have a nice selection of fancies and good for Hikari foods.

Exotic fish connections

Shop 28 Building G Sherwood Road, Rocklea QLD 4106

These guys are across the road from the Sunday Brisbane Markets at Rocklea. They have a nice selection of goldfish and always have a good variety and quality.

The Pet Barn

19 Hinkler Dr, Nerang QLD 4211

Not to be confused with Pet Barn chain stores, they say they had the name first and have been trading for over 20 years. They have a nice fish selection also. Again if you get there when they have a new shipment, quality goldfish can be found.

Other random things to buy for your goodies.

Aquarium Plants

If you happen to visit the Brisbane Markets at Rocklea, there's usually a guy there who sells aquarium plants mainly amazon swords, anubias and Java ferns as well as many others. His prices are quite cheap as he is a supplier to the pet stores and any of his excess stock he sells at the markets.

Dry Goods - Age of Aquariums

Unit 2, 10-12 Webber Drive, Browns Plains Qld 4118

https://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/home.php

You can order everything that isn't living from these guys. If you ever go and visit the store, they are like the absolute best as you can have really good and interesting fish related conversations with them. They are great for equipment and ship all over Australia.

That's all I can think of at the moment.
