Getting filter media from a tank with a UGF?

Recommended Posts

I currently have a betta in a tank with an under-gravel filter, and will be upgrading him to a tank with an external filter sometime in the future. I was wondering, is there any way I could transfer some of the "media" in his current tank to the new one?

I think I read somewhere that in tanks with a UGF, the bacteria colonize in the gravel/substrate itself, so would I just have to dump a handful of his old gravel into the new tank? Or should I not bother and just start the new tank with a fresh cycle?

Hi! People may have noticed I am a big fan of undergravels :-) I usually just put most of the old gravel in the new tank unwashed!! .....but this will not work unless you have undergravels in the new tank so I would cycle the new tank/filter before adding fish......well that is what I would do! :-)
