Regular Member Scarlett Posted December 1, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted December 1, 2013 I've noticed these tiny little clear snails in my son's tropical tank. At first, I only noticed one. Now, there are four. They look like a common garden snail, but completely clear and tiny. I tried to take a photo, but it's blurry. Does anyone know what they are and more importantly, where they are coming from?
Regular Member Daniel Posted December 1, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted December 1, 2013 Wild. I don't know what they are, but hopefully someone will. Have you added any organic matter to the tank lately?
Helper FishyMandy Posted December 1, 2013 Helper Share Posted December 1, 2013 They look like the snails that ended up in my axolotl tank when I added plants, they hitched a ride. I'm pretty sure they are harmless, but they reproduce like crazy
Regular Member Herts Posted December 1, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted December 1, 2013 I have heaps of them in my Platy tank, they come with plants. I haven't had any in my goldfish tank because I've bleach dipped all the plants I've added
Regular Member Scarlett Posted December 1, 2013 Author Regular Member Share Posted December 1, 2013 Have you added any organic matter to the tank lately? Not lately, but they are so small, they could have been there for months!

Regular Member Scarlett Posted December 1, 2013 Author Regular Member Share Posted December 1, 2013 Yes!!! That's them. Are they a pest?
Regular Member yafashelli Posted December 1, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted December 1, 2013 Looks like ramshorn snails to me! As long as you keep up with your tank maintenance, the population will stay in check. They feed on organic matter inside the tank, and if you don't leave them a ton of "food", then they won't have the opportunity to become a nuisance. We used to have a problem with them in my dad's tropical tanks, as they'd come in on the plants. Now, I bleach dip everything, so I don't have to worry about them.
Regular Member FlipsHere Posted December 1, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted December 1, 2013 Yes!!! That's them. Are they a pest? Just remove the ones you see and look out for them in your filters
Regular Member Scarlett Posted December 2, 2013 Author Regular Member Share Posted December 2, 2013 I actually found a secondary population of snails in one of my 200 litre tank filters. But, these are different. They are black and have a different shape shell. There were 100's of them living in my filter, but none in the tank. Weird.
