Eggs Hatched!

I was looking in tank today and saw clear eggs with the fry moving inside.

We came home and some of the eggs we saw earlier were gone. Figured eaten. Then we saw tiny newborn fry clinging to leaves or swimming against the current.

We ended up "rescuing" about ten fry.

So cute!!

Can't believe my huge fish were once this tiny.

Here are my fry after one week. They are in a 5.5 gallon tank. Feeding brine shrimp and juice from my Rapashy. Think I have 6-7 fry.

:clapping:

Looks like you're gonna need another 120 soon. :rofl

I'm no expert on fry but I think those that are experts recommend treating with Prazi once the fry are 2 weeks old. :D

Keep us updated!! :please

I'm planning on maybe keeping one (the prettiest one) and then finding good homes for the rest.

This is the first try at raising fry. Wish me luck

Yeah I plan on treating after one more week.

Hi Alex

Question, at what point should I start filtration?

I have the 5-gallon 1/2 filled currently with just an airstone, few stones from my main tank and a couple floating plants. Parameters are 0 for ammonia and nitrite.

The tank came with HOB filter. I was going to wrap intake with a sponge filter but wasn't sure if they are yet big enough to avoid the filter.

I recommend water changes over filtration. I like shallow tubs like dishpans. Then just transfer the fry to fresh water daily. It's very easy (and fun) to just scoop a baby up in your cupped hand and transfer it to the clean water. Of course you can only do this when you have a small number of fry.

Thanks! Yeah I would be concerned with using filtration now that they are so small

How are they doing and when do we get new pics? :photo:

:rofl

I counted seven. They are swimming around and seem to be doing great. They are so small my camera can't focus on them.

They all look like they have no defects and eating away

I'll try to get new pics this week. Plan on doing pics weekly

I can't believe I missed this thread ;) Congrats!!!

I used a sponge filter in my 2.5 and 5.5 and did daily water changes with a airline hose ;) I also started prazi on their 2 week mark :)

You used a sponge filter right away or at a certain point? I have a 5.5 gallon kit with a small HOB but haven't turned it on yet for fear of them getting caught. I did wrap intake though.

I've been doing PWC with a turkey baster and skimming water with a cup from surface.

I have an air hose and floating plants.

This Saturday will be two weeks so was going to do the prazipro treatment then.

Oh my gosh, they've gotten so big! They look fantastic:)

What are your plans as far as Prazi goes?

Yeah they doubled in size but still teeny-tiny. Probable a centimeter long now.

I'm going to start first round of prazipro tomorrow.
