I recently bought some fish with this fault. I went to a ranchu breeder and he showed me his various fish, I got some lovely ones. He also showed me some with this defect not as bad as the one above, just the corner folded in. He said he had pulled them from their summer pond and noticed they had this defect. He said they were OK to breed with as long as I bred them with a fish without this. He let me have these at a reduced rate. Funnily enough one of them spawned as soon as I got them home and I have managed to hatch a few fry. I will let you know if the fry are affected. However, I have noticed that the affected adults are growing and feeding normally so I am not too worried. I have wondered if they contracted some type of fluke or infection whilst they were in their outdoor quarters and this caused the deformity.

Has your fish always had the mouth fold?

No, treat the whole tank. Prazipro can be ordered from tastyworms.com for very cheaply.

You will have to handle the fish a bit, with light prying open of the gills. Shine a light into the mouth as well as gills. :)

I have both of those. So you think a fluke infestation has caused the mouth to turn inwards? Is this a common problem?

I do think so. Here is a thread where we discussed this a while back

http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/96523-shubies-jaw-shaped-differently/?hl=%2Bparrot+%2Bmouth+%2Bflukes#entry1152758

It's important to note that some people think that it could be other environmental/genetic issues, and can happen in large spawns.

No their is no carbon in my filter

Great! :)

Thank you, that is most useful. They were quarantined by me in water with salt in, as instructed by breeder. Now I will go round with the fluke solve just in case.
