New fish...

Last Thursday I got a panda telescope and a pearlscale (finally got a pearlie). The telescope has ended up with a gill disease, the gills are bright red under the gill flap. She is barely breathing and she stays either at the top or sitting on the bottom. She is not clamping her fins though. As for my pearlscale, she has ick. I have them together in a 20 gallon quarantine tank and I was wondering if there were any meds that would treat both. I went to petsmart and the woman told me to buy these two different medicines to use (at different times) one for ick and one for the gill disease. The two meds are Mardel for ick, velvet and other external parasites. It's main ingredients are Malachite green and Chitosan. The second is API triple sulfa. It says it treats mouth fungus, body slime & eye cloud, bacterial gill disease and fin rot.

My main questions are, has anyone used these meds and do they work? Is there another way to treat these issues without meds? Is there a med that treats both at the same time? Do fish usually make it after getting the gill disease? Thank you guys so much! I am super worried about them :undecided:

The store lady also told me if I treated for ich with the mardel that it may also treat the gill issue...

I can't help you with any if this but please don't use these meds yet if you haven't already! They are very strong and often do more harm than good.

I think pics will help the mods, as well as more detailed descriptions of what you see with each fish, as well as what you observe in their behavior.

Congrats on the new fish, but sorry they're not doing well :(

I would start a proper dnd and answer the questions above. That way Alex and the mods can walk you through a treatment plan. Guessing and checking before getting a full picture and trying multiple drug can harm the fish more than help it. Just like humans, their kidneys can only take so much....

Okay, I haven't given any meds yet and I will charge up the batteries for my camera and I'll try to get some pictures by tomorrow. I am going to go test my water right now and fill out the dnd stuff. Thanks so much for the responses!

Also, should I take the fish out that doesn't have ick?

I hope your fish get better. I know how disheartening it is to get new fish and for them to get sick. You were very smart to QT them though.

Below is my baby pearlscale and if you notice the white spots on her tail, that's the ick I'm talking about. Also, this is not her quarantine tank this is only a bucket I was using for photographs.

The image below is my panda telescope (Nova) but I couldn't get a really good picture of her gills but she is doing so much better! She is white on the bottom and around her lips, she looks like a black moor in this picture though.

Hi Ele,

What happened to the rest of the pics?

For ich treatment, we prefer salt, because it's mild and extremely effective. You need to treat the tank that he's in (NOT QT), and salt needs to be at 0.3%, or 3 level teaspoons per gallon. You should change the water 50% at least once a day, if possible, and the salt replaced. This will need to continue for 1-2 weeks AFTER the very last of the spots have disappeared.

How are the fish doing?

Ok, I've been treating my pearlscale for the past few days with salt and she is looking so much better! Now she only has a couple of spots versus all of those in the picture above. However, I was treating her in my QT tank and so I think in my main tank I'm about to have an outbreak because I am seeing a couple of white spots on my other fish.

The pictures did something funky so I'll try again

Here is Nova and you can kinda see the red under her gills
