I was going to wait until after.....................

Recommended Posts

I was going to wait until after qt and give a formal introduction to my new fish the Blue Oranda aka Big Blue but I don't think I can wait another two or three weeks. ha ha ha I was also trying to figure out the sex of the fish so I can have a proper name for him/her. But I keep going back and fourth.

The fish is probably a few months older then my Oranda's that I have now which are about 16, 17, months. So Big Blue could be about 18 months to maybe close to 2 years old. With this said, my new fish is as big as my female Oranda. My two male Oranda's are much smaller then my female Oranda and this new fish. I've read that boys are smaller then girls. I've seen no breeding stars. This would make the fish a girl. But the fish has no belly which would be a boy. I've seen the vent and it is protruding out. It's not flush to the skin. What does this mean? A boy!

If the fish is a girl I want to name her Halo. If the fish is a boy I'm thinking of Jet. So do you know what I should call this fish? Here are photo's taken today during a qt wc so the photo's aren't that clear because of the prazi and salt. You are probably going to get tired of seeing my fish. ha ha ha

Yes, it's a boy, from the tubercles.

I was confused by the outie vent comment.

Really? A boy! The vent was an outie. It was sticking out. :madrant I like the name Halo but not for a Boy.

In the last picture, if you look at the pectoral fins, it looks like there are white dots on it, which would be tubercles.

I initially went with your observation of the outie vent to say call ex-Big Blue, but the last pic might suggest boy instead. Do you see the tubercles in real life, or is it just artifacts of the picture?

I like Halo for either a boy or girl ;)

Your fish is absolutely gorgeous!!!! Absolutely love the coloring. Where did you get the mystery sexed fish? Something you planned on? or ?

P.S. If I could have a 4th, thats the coloring I'd look for but alas, I'm all stocked up :(

Now I don't see the bump. I hope these are okay. I do not see any breeding stars. Sorry it took awhile. I put the fish in a small container. :)

Are those breeding stars in the second to last photo? All those tiny, tiny, dots that are all lined up perfectly. ha ha I do see those in the photo but didn't in the fish. I'm bad at this.

Answering above questions soon. :)

I think outie is a girl that is why I was confused. But now that I picked up the fish and took a really good look it's flushed to skin. Thank you for the compliment. She's a blue oranda. :) I found her in a petsmart a couple towns away from my town. No I didn't plan on getting the fish. I went home and posted on the fish. Went back about 5 days later and got him/her. :)
