Going to the surface often and gulping air Few days ago, Tuff, My red ryukin was flipping upside down after eating and he looked like he was constipated, so the next day I went to the grocery store to buy some frozen peas, I went home and heated some under the microwave for 1minute I peeled the shell off and I squish the peas and dumped it in so Tuff can eat it, later on eating it he poo out normally but this time green and the day later he started to gulp air when ever he sees me, and I don't if it's normal or not, he keeps gulping air ever since when I gave him peas, yesterday, when I checked his poo it was like really long and it was whitish case in some parts and brown in some parts, in the morning, I see poo floating to the top with air bubbles inside, I don't know what I should do.. Is there something wrong with him? I fed him some more peas so he can poo all the air out..
Regular Member Mr. Hyde Posted August 19, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted August 19, 2013 Don't stress, I'm sure one of the Moderators can help you out. I noticed you describing the poop. I'm not as experienced as many on here, but I came across this link that describes what different types of poop can mean. May want to check it out until someone can help with your fish problem. http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/GoldfishPoop.html Good luck.
Regular Member DieselPlower Posted August 19, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted August 19, 2013 (edited) I am not good with diagnosis and medication at all but for starters at .25 ammonia and zero nitrate and nitrite I wonder if this tank is not cycled? I don't like to see that high of ammonia and it does look like your water change routine may be a bit weak. with 2 fish in a 29 gallon I would want to be changing out almost all of the water every week. cleaner water would help with general health. Also I couldn't say for sure but maybe your tank is short on oxygen? Water changes help to replinish the oxygen in the tank, as would a bubbler. You said the fish did seem to be breathing heavy. Maybe that is why it is gulping at the top. Anything odd from the other fish? Edited August 19, 2013 by DieselPlower

Since he had long white poop with air bubbles in it, but yesterday his poop look like a sausage case how like it was holding the filling in and it kept falling out and I see like a thin layer outside when the filling fell out.. The other fish doesn't gulp air as often as the ryukin, the ranchu is still acting the same, it's only the ryukin Are you able to take any pics of the tank? Regular Member dnalex Posted August 20, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted August 20, 2013 How is he doing today? From what I read from your post, you seem to associate the gulping of air with the eating of peas. So, if you continue to feed peas, he's going to keep poop out cases of air. Let's not feed him any more peas, and go back to his old food, but at 1/3 portion.

He seems to be constipated, his stomach got a little bigger

Regular Member nighttigerz Posted August 20, 2013 Author Regular Member Share Posted August 20, 2013 How's the fish? When ever I come by the tank he starts gulping for air when I walk away he doesn't gulp air as often.. Maybe he's excited?
Regular Member Mr. Hyde Posted August 20, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted August 20, 2013 Mine do that too. For me, it helped that I allow the pellets to sink to the bottom. I'm trying to get them used to looking at the bottom of the tank for food instead of the top. I had a bad habit of feeding them up top at first. Learning as you go, I guess. I also give them raw peas if they get floaty...mostly the red one has that issue.
Regular Member Mr. Hyde Posted August 20, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted August 20, 2013 ...just read what Alex said about "no peas for now", so probably best to follow that advice over mine. That dude is one smart cookie, and knows what he's talking about.

I fed him some of the food i usually give him and now hes just chilling on the surface and pooing but then his poo is really thin and its clear, and he looks like his stomach is getting bigger. When ever I come by the tank he starts gulping for air when I walk away he doesn't gulp air as often.. Maybe he's excited? Yeah this might just be him thinking you're feeding him so he's excited and trying to get the food he think he'll get? He doesn't do it when you're away (he can't see you)?

Regular Member dnalex Posted August 22, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted August 22, 2013 Do you ever feed him leafy greens like red leaf lettuce? I am thinking that a lot of this is a behavioral issue. Perhaps he was used to flakes before, so we might want to retrain him to not gulp so much by clipping various types of veggies (blanched) or raw red leaf lettuce well below the surface...
