4prettyfish 2,702 Posted August 17, 2013 (edited) August 18th will be one year of having Pearl our Crowned Pearscale. My daughter (then 14) brought this little fish home after spending the day with her dad. The little fish was bagged up from Petco and was no more then an inch and a half in total length. A cute little thing that had a little belly on her. Over the past year that we have had her she has been very healthy. We found out she was a female because about 6 months ago or so she was being chased by two bigger in size Oranda's and a Black Moor that was the same size as her. All the fish were about the same age though. Over a week of on and off chasing by these three fish that were pinning her down to the bottom of the tank and making her hide in a plant I finally said, NO More. I went out at bought her a new 34g tank. Unfortunately I ended up purchasing a new bigger Oranda and I used Pearl's new 34g tank for qt'ing the new fish. Pearl was still in the 55g and the chasing seemed to cease for awhile. When the chasing started up again I decided to put Pearl in the 34g tank with the new qt Oranda after getting some mixed advice on what to do from here. Along with others I think I made the right decision. Pearl was being prazi'ed with Harriet. All was great and they remained healthy. I felt bad for big Harriet after a couple of months being in the 34g tank so I switched things up and Pearl now resides in the 34g tank with Bugsy the Black Moor. They have been together for a few months now and even though Bugsy is a boy I can still separate them I have to. Pearl and Bugsy have been the same size for as long as I can remember but Pearl is now bigger. I should have measured her but I'm guessing she is 4 1/2 inches at least in total length. The photo's below doesn't do justice for how big her round belly is for being a pearlscale. She definitely is bigger then the Black Moor now. Pearl has a nice two bump wen that I hope continues to grow with her. Pearl's wen was a special find a few months after having her when we noticed something appearing on top of her head. Here are some recent photo's. I just couldn't get any good shots this time. This is Pearl's and Bugsy's 34g home. Yes the wen has grown. When we first got her she had nothing. The photo's I took of her show her no justice. ha She has two individual "puffs/balloons/?whatever the word is called. Sure the wen is small still but since she's been eating frozen blood worms I can see a significant difference. I'm loving her more each day.
