Kylen 53 Posted July 6, 2013 Well I have a batch of fry that are going to be two months on the 17th. They are out in my 250 gallon stock tank/pond. Recently I decided to bring a few in to keep in my tank to observe their growth. But a few days in I noticed all 3 had lifted gill flaps on their left side. After a further investigation it turns out 80% of the fry have the same defect. I find it odd though. Neither of the parents had any gill defects and there is no chance of inbreeding between the two. To have a recessive trait so prevalent is weird. It just bums me out because lifted gill plates bug the heck out of me and I cant stand looking at them. So I can't keep most of them and I cant imagine anyone who will want them, but I dont want to kill them.

Pearlscaleperfect 3,561 Posted July 6, 2013 pictures! I'm sure many people wouldn't mind a fish with a curled gill flap
Stratt14goldies 962 Posted July 6, 2013 Do you have any friends in the hobby? Maybe donate them to a trusted LFS?
Georgia 3,820 Posted July 6, 2013 I wouldn't really mind them! I think it would give the fish more character I have a little singletail with a missing dorsal fin with no hopes of growing back, and I think it makes him more loveable <3 Good luck!

tithra 4,917 Posted July 7, 2013 that's a bummer This is second hand information, but one of our previous (and well respected members) ryukin girl, has stated that curled gills can be a sign of heavy fluke infestation or high nitrites (could also just be genetic). Did you treat the fry with prazi? Here is a thread that talks about this http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/90363-gill-curl-in-baby-goldfishis-this-genetic/

Flipper 13,057 Posted July 9, 2013 This is my favorite fish, Flipper. She has terrible floaty swim bladder issues and one of her gills has flipped since the day I bought her, but her imperfections are endearing Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Kylen 53 Posted July 10, 2013 One of my favorite fish has 2 1/2 tails (two full ones and then a third tip of a tail) and I embrace that in her, these kind of characteristics are what we find so endearing. Im not saying they are bad fish, just that the flipped gill flap creeps me out and fish stores wont take them.
