Regular Member Kris0823 Posted June 22, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted June 22, 2013 Are the lead plant weights safe? It says non-toxic, but I worry it could leach? Any experience on this? Many thanks!!

Regular Member yafashelli Posted June 22, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted June 22, 2013 Some plant weights are made with lead. The thought is that the lead weights become dangerous after a long time sitting in the water, and the protective coating begins to wear off. That being said, most aquarium weights made today are "environmentally friendly", meaning they're most likely lead free. When looking for weights, I try to buy those. I'm not positive, but I think they're made of zinc.

Regular Member ashlee18 Posted June 22, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted June 22, 2013 My personal favorites are the ones sold on planted aquarium central. And I get plants to justify the shipping

Regular Member number20121 Posted June 23, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted June 23, 2013 Mine started to rust. Not sure what kind exactly they were but I surely disliked that.
Regular Member shellbell4ever Posted June 23, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted June 23, 2013 i think they are made for temporary use, I wouldn't use them for long period of time? i would worry they would do something to upset my tank
Regular Member ashlee18 Posted June 24, 2013 Regular Member Share Posted June 24, 2013 I leave them in my tropical tank. I wouldn't want to uproot the plant to remove the weight. That kinda defeats the purpose.
