Boiled Egg Shells?

Recommended Posts

I made boiled eggs this morning. Then I cleaned the shells....pealed ALL the "skin" out of them. Is that good enough to add to my tank?

(I have them tied up in a mesh bag awaiting the go ahead to drop into the tank!!)

For what purpose do you want to put the egg shell in? If its for the fish to eat, I'd say it's too sharp.

If it's for adding minerals to the water, I'm not sure if boiled eggs shell have the same level of minerals that raw eggs shell have.

I'm gonna have to think on this... I know a dried cuttlebone is a good option if someone naysays this.

Hmm.

Egg shells have the nasty habit of getting black and icking up the water. I use cuttlebones for my snails.

I would rather go with cuttlebone too. The problem with the egg shell is that the edges are sharp and we all know what geniuses our goldfish are.

The cuttlebone is large, and rather soft. Much easier for the snails to graze on to get their extra minerals :)

Why order them? Do you have any pet store near you, or even Walmart? You find these in the bird section for like a couple dollars. Just remove the metal holder and toss the thing into the tank as is, or just a piece of it. It will float until it is fully soaked. It may also smell weird when you first open it. The stronger the smell, the fresher it is, so no worries there. But even if it does not smell at all, that's fine too. It's just minerals, so it doesn't really matter so much :)
