Do only male fish have breeding stars of their dorsals and bottom fin?

Recommended Posts

Normally, only males have them, yes, but there are of course, exceptions.

I have a fish who my definite males are pretty sure is a lady fish, and they give her lots of attention. She has breeding stars on her pectoral rays, but none on her face. I guess she's just kinda special like that.

They can have them on the front rays of the pectoral fins, as well as all over the body actually :)

This is why you should never diagnose diseases on your own. I always consult at least one other person by treating with anything.

I will always do that. Come here, panic, and wait for divine assistance.

My female ryukin, Hoover, has breeding stars on her pectorals and gill plates, but I know it is a girl because I saw her lay eggs! :)

If you post a clear pic of their vent, it's possible we can find out for you. Though with younger smaller fish, it is sometimes hard to sex. There is a gender guide in my siggy if you want to read up on more info :)

Males have a thicker pectoral fin and will show breeding stars on them. Females will have thicker Anal fins and thinner pectoral fins.. just a few more tips.
