Help! Fins have rotted off!

Recommended Posts

poor guy :( I cannot see the video, however in the pics I see definite dropsy and pop eye.

Are you in the states? If so, do you have the means to order some metro meds asap? http://www.goldfishconnection.com/shop/details.php?productId=9&catId=1

For now you can go ahead and dose with epsom 1/4 tsp per 10 gallons and go ahead and turn the heat up a bit in the tank if you have a heater (78F or so)

Okay pH 7.4

Ammonia is 0

Nitrite is 0

NitrAte is 5

I am uploading a video of him. He got upright again and started swimming around. His body and his poms turned WHITE, but within 5 minutes returned to normal color and he's looking better. His scales are going down. What the HECK happened? What did I do? :(

This video shows how white he turned. You can especially see how white his pom is. WHAT THE HECK??

There are many many reasons dropsy occurs. We can treat for the multiple reasons, but sometimes we can't weed down to exactly what happened.

Okay, I fixed the video. I don't have epsom salt. I thought I did, but I can't find it. I am up to my eyeballs in medical bills right now so I'm not sure how much I can afford for meds, which breaks my freakin heart because I have been working so hard to help him feel better. I know the fin rot was probably my fault, but I didn't know and now I feel so guilty that he's so sick. I will look at the price and see if I can get the meds and I can get the salt tomorrow.

He seems to be doing a bit better. His color has returned, the scales are still sticking out but I believe less than before. I tried feeding him and he spit the pellet out :( He's gasping and bottom sitting. My poor fish :(

Ok, I got the meds. I figured it's good to have on hand in case my new guy gets something too :-/ Hopefully it should be here in a couple of days, and I can grab the salt tomorrow AM. Thank you so much for your prompt replies, I really do appreciate all your help :)

In good news, it seems my filter has finally cycled.

Please also pick up a syringe from the drug store when you go to get the epsom. If he is spitting out food now he may need to be syringe fed the meds when you get them.

GFC is usually pretty prompt in sending out their orders.

Get the smallest size Epsom available to you. It should be around $1-$1.50.

Good luck!

also, since you will be cranking up the heat shortly, i would like you to add either a bubble wand or airstone to the tank.., it will make the situaton comfortable for him. can i ask what that patch of colour on his back is? is he forming a normal brown or was he a floater and that bit was exposed to air at the surface?

Stakos that is a normal patch of brown. I don't have a suction cup for my heater wand to keep it in place, but my water temp stays around 76-78 because we live in FL. I do have a bubbler in there at the moment. Thank you for the advice!

I couldn't get the epsom until tonight, but I just added it. How soon should I see some results? He's swimming around a lot, and a little floaty, but he's eating. His scales are pretty pine-coned :( Hopefully I will get the metromeds soon.

It will likely take at least a couple days for the bloating to go down with the epsom.

I am glad he's eating :)

If you have the funds available you could look locally for some powdered metronidazole. The powder can be fed until you receive the metro meds. Often local pet stores will carry this and it is not too expensive :)http://www.petmountain.com/product/multi-purpose-aquarium-medications/11442-503346/metronidazole-5-gram.html

Daily water changes are also helpful at this time if you can do it. If you don't have time, do as many as you do have time for just to keep the water conditions as pristine as possible.

Did the meds arrive yet?

No, the meds STILL aren't here, but it's Sunday so I don't expect them today :( I have been doing daily 100% wc. We're dumping lots of water around here these days ;) Good news is he's looking MUCH better. He's no longer sitting and gasping. He's still a little floaty and his scales haven't completely flattened but they are MUCH better. His body isn't as swollen and he does swim around happily as well as eat :) I've been feeding him 2-3 peas a day in the hopes that any constipation which might be contributing to this might be alleviated.

Now I'm battling worms in my MT. I started a forum for that. Gosh I don't think I'm ever going to see the day where all the fish can be reunited in ONE tank. /Sigh

I'm glad to hear he's still OK, the meds should come monday.

How many days has he been in epsom now? Would you mind posting some top view pics so we can assess the bloating?

Ok sorry it's been a few hours, I was able to snap some pics and video tonight but I'm in the hospital again so I can't upload. Darth is looking better, seems stronger and fights more when I try to pick him up. He is still bottom sitting and gulping occasionally though. I got it all on video after his 100 percent wc. Still adding the Epsom and metro meds are STILL not here. I'm very stressed.

I'm really surprised meds aren't here yet. Can you contact goldfishconnection (or have someone else). If you'd like to pm me your address before this evening I could ship some meds to you just so you know there are some coming, not sure how much good this would do though given the holiday coming up, you may want to talk to gfc first.... I would hope their order would arrive sooner than I could get anything to you.

Sorry to hear you are in the hospital again :(

Also just a heads up that 8 days is the max to keep him in the Epsom, so once we hit that mark you'll need to make sure to do either a 100% change or a couple big 80% back to back changes to get the Epsom out

Ill need to get my husband to check to see if the meds came. If not we will call them ad see what happened :/. I am home now and recovering from surgery :) thank you so much for your kindness! Im hoping to make a full recovery now! I'll have to do a 100% change to take out the epsom today. Hopefully my husband can help with that. I will get on my laptop later and upload pics so you can see. I'm wondering if I can move him to the mt. I need to get a python or something so I can do more frequent wc on the mt but I need help figuring out if its possible to do with my sink faucet. I took pics of that too.

My mt has some nemotodes going on right now. Hopefully Darth can take care of em because my Pleco doesn't seem to care for em and they keep coming back! I would like to unite the whole fish crew. I stopped the praziquantel in my new guys tank after 3 cycles because I wasn't going to be able to be home. Do you think it'll be ok to move them?

I will have a big pic/video update for you after I rest up this morning. Thank you so much for everything!

Darth should remain in QT for at least the duration of treatment. The other fish who are not sick should not eat the Metro meds.

How long have the new guys been in QT? (I assume you have the new guys in a qt and then a main tank with other fish?)

Okay, I'm so sorry for the prolonged absence! I am back home, and finally completely recovered. The metro meds medicine never did come, but Darth improved after I removed all salt. I did try reintroducing him to my MT, but because of his lack of fins, he just had too hard of a time swimming around and he kept running into ornaments. I can't get rid of my ship because that's where the pleco lives. If he's not in the ship he's really agitated with the light and darts all over the tank and scares my dogs.

I purchased a hood and a light for my 10gal and set Darth out next to the MT. It's looking like the 10gal is going to be his forever home :( His fins are slowly coming back. He's still a little floaty and tends to just chill at the bottom of the tank, but when motivated by food he can dart around after it and he's not gasping or anything. If I come by he "dances" around for me and gets excited.

I just got some repashy for Christmas and I'm expecting it to get here soon. I am reordering some metromeds to have on hand, but I'm not sure if I should give them or not because he seems to be okay. I really think the fin damage is the main ailment.

On another happy note, my husband bought me 2 fish to keep my new chocolate oranda company since it turned out Darth couldn't join him. I'm treating them all with prazi in the MT since I got a python and WC are now a breeze. Now I have an orange and a red capped oranda to keep the chocolate oranda company. He/she was VERY excited to have friends. They chase each other around and I imagine they're playing. They all still need names though!

Pictures and video to come, as soon as I find where the 2 year old hid my phone ;)

Thank you so much for your help, and happy holidays!
