Hi everyone!

I am going to make my first batch of gel food soon :)

Here are the ingredients im going to use but i dont know how much of each i should put in the mixture :P

Gerber Pea baby food

100% pure pumpkin

Carrots

Cucumbers

Red bell pepper

Gelatin (knox brand)

:)

Please tell me how much of each i shall put in, if these are good ingredients, and what each thing does (if possible) :)

I am curcious to know why goldies need pumpkin! Haha thank you:)

I personally would leave out the cucumbers.

The pumpkin is for beta carotene which can enhance color.

You might add some leafy greens like spinach or kale to it instead of the cucumber :) You also don't have a protein source (fish) in this recipe, so you'll need to feed primarily pellets still, and give this gel food as an additional snack.

As far as measurements it is honestly kind of hard to say. A gel food recipe takes some trial and error to figure out usually in terms of getting the exact measurements down. Hopefully someone else might be able to give you more direction of that though.

Have you checked out any of the already made up gel food recipes on the site (we have lots!) that way the measurements are already there for you and someone else has already done the trial and error :) And then you can always modify a recipe a little to your own liking. Here are some links: (in the recipes containing agar agar, gelatin can be substituted)

If you have reservations about using animal products in the gel food, then you are better off buying pre-made food, such as Repashy soilent green. Goldfish will need an ample amount of proteins to grow :)

Even if you dont eat fish, remember you're not a goldfish ;) and they definitely would. They need a complete diet just like humans do. Pellets have fish products in them, algae has protein fish need too.

Yes it can be hard not to anthropomorphize our animals. I was a vegetarian too until I was tested for vitamin levels and realized how deficient I was in some areas! Now I eat some animal products, just enough to keep my body healthy but oops! :BTT Onward!

I am no expert in gel food as I have never made it and tried it with my goldfish, so I will refrain from giving you advice on it. It's something I am planning on making once I can afford to soon. Some food experts will definitely give you good answers and I'll read along so I can learn too.

As far as pre-made foods, after reading everyone's reviews of repashys soilent green - I can say it seems ideal and is definitely #1 on my list. As for pellets, I use new life spectrum (available at petco and online) and I have had great results with it, although as of the last few days I am having a few buoyancy problems with my rounder orandas... I think for most fish they work great. People also recommend Hikari brand goldfish foods, which are great too but can be expensive - and you can find cheaper foods with the same ingredients.

With all that said - :welcome

My fish definitely need a diet make-over so I will be keeping up here, doing lots of research and trying to plan.. Good luck hon!

Repashy Soilent Green is a pre-mixed powder that you can easily turn into a gel. Google Repashy Soilent Green to buy online from 5 - 60 USD depending on how much you want, and here is a great youtube video explaining about it and how to make it.

Cheers hon!

Thanks Miss Colonel! Also don't apologize for asking questions. I ask tons all the time and learn something new every day. They call members koko "nuts" for a reason! These people (I am being assimilated as we speak) love goldfish and teaching. It is a very warm forum. They have given a lot to me and I am happy to give back in any way I can.

Ok, I'm off topic here, but I really want a koko's bumper sticker. I want to show off my goldfish crazyness.
