  1. My Mum’s goldfish has been unwell for a couple of weeks. He’s mostly been resting at the bottom of his tank (as pictured) though he had one day where he was more lively. The area above his tail is noticeably swollen and red, and the tail itself has also turned the same colour. He was a rescue fish, who’s now ten years old and has always been active and healthy. He’s on his own in a 56 litre (12 gallon) tank. He gets fed two small pinches of Tetra goldfish flakes twice a day at 9am and 3pm. Once a week my Mum does a partial water change using Tapsafe water conditioner, rinses the sponge filter from an Eheim 60 in his tank water, and vacuums his gravel. She also changes his sponge filters once a month. So far my Mum has tried smaller water changes every third day, and antibacterial/fungus treatment four days ago, but he doesn’t seem to be improving. Does anyone know what’s wrong with him? Is there anything else she could try? Can we expect him to get better/worse? She’s never been a fish person, but stepped in to take care of the little guy. She’s extremely attached to him now and would hate to think he was suffering in any way. Any knowledge and advice would be greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance!
  2. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank) 10-20ppm (colors look the same to me) * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) Also 10-20ppm * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.2 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.2 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API drops * Water temperature? 70 F * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 75 gallons, maybe 1.5 yrs * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Aquaclear 110 + 2 Azoo sponge filters rated for 75 gallons each * How often do you change the water and how much? At least once a week, 90% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? Oct 4th, 100% * How many fish in the tank and their size? 7 goldies, most of them weighing about 30 grams * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime * What do you feed your fish and how often? Mostly NLS thera A pellets a few times a day * Any new fish added to the tank? No * Any medications added to the tank? I happen to be in the middle of annual prazi treatment, it will be done by oct 9 * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. A year ago, they went through several salt + prazipro rounds * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? There appears to be blood pooling in the eyeball... I noticed a blood spot (first pic) about 3 weeks ago. I have been leaving it alone thinking she had just gotten poked by the plastic plant and that it would heal without help (ugh).. I didn't notice change until tonight. The eye was always larger than the other, but today I can see it is definitely swelling beyond what is normal for her and now there is more blood! * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? She has always been a surface gulper but everything else seems fine behavior wise. Still active and eating. Thank you!
  3. First: sorry I cant do the copy and past info. I am just learning how to do water tests and don't understand them yet. I change the water very infrequently and only 20 percent of it. BUT right now all my tanks are newly re-set up with aquasafe, quickstart, and aquarium salts. I don't know much about goldfish, I'm new to the more refined ways of caring for them having only had them as a little kid years and years ago. I can't say about the behavior whats normal and whats not. OK. What is going on is: I just bought a big black moor (I think) goldfish because I felt bad for it. It has some sort of problem with its gills (mostly on one side) It is like the flap over the gills is pulled back and they are hanging out bright red with some sort of necrosis going on maybe? In a 20 gallon tank with bubbler. Treatment includes feeding boiled peas to flush digestive tract, givin API General Cure to the fish incase of parasites, putting in Aquarium Salts. The tank in general has been treated with Aquasafe and quickstart. This is a NEW fish. OLD 20 gallon tank. I feed my fish boiled peas one time a day. (for the next few days, then I will move back to feeding it flakes mixed with water). It is the only fish and it is at least 3 inches long. VIDEO OF THIS: (Shown in a betta bowl for closer viewing) *see starting at 10 secounds where the gills on the one side are visable. Photo: http://sta.sh/02dgbq5zic8g I'm sorry I'm inexperienced and probably doing everything wrong but I'm really trying and really willing to learn more and do better so please relax, give me a break, and give me a chance to do things better/right.
  4. Hi guys i have bought a Calico Fantail that is big size (obvious it is an adult). The fish was recently received at the fish store and have bought it straightforward so it might be stressed and had Ich, but, does not show any other signs of sickness, fins are in excellent condition and scales are not raised, so i don't think it has dropsy. After 12 hours, Ich seemed to have disappeared (thanks to the aquarium salt). ALSO NOTE: The other goldfish at the pet shop had ripped fins, Ich and some had really raised scales (dropsy). When i placed it in the quarantine tank (which i have established for many months now with filter and air pump) i noticed the fish had a swollen belly on the right side (near where the tail starts, not on the middle of the fish). Also note my quarantine tank has Aquarium salt and PraziPro and was Tested with API kit which showed: PH level 7.9, Ammonia 0ppm, Nitrate 0ppm, Nitrate 15ppm I have made some research and have found that swollen belly could be one of the following: - Dropsy (i don't think so because my fish is very active and has a big appetite and scales ARE NOT raised) - Internal parasites - Tumour (it doesn't look like a lump but i am not that experienced to know) - Liver problem - Egg bound (please have in mind the temperature here the last 7 days has suddenly changed from 28 Celsius to 20 Celsius and barometer also decreased and was in a bag with lots of other goldfish for many days until it was transferred to the pet shop) - Birth deformity I will try and take a photo and post a link in a few hours. Also, I will not feed it for 3 days. If it is egg bound should i put one of my male goldfish? (i know which ones are males because i had them breed and i already raised goldfish babies) Or, should i try pushing the eggs out myself (which i have no idea how to do). Can you guys advice me further, please Thanks in advance, Spyro
