  1. So I bought some floating Water Sprite about a month ago, and quarantined it in case of snails. Sho'nuff, pond snails popped up. So I removed what I *thought* were all the snails and plants with eggs. For the past week I've been watching for any signs of activity, but saw no signs of snails. So today I finally set up my 55 gallon, and added in my plants. As I'm running my hands through the Water Sprite, I feel something squishy. I looked, but didn't see anything, so I got out a powerful shop light, and lo and behold, eggs. I'm so P.O.'d right now. I did my best to remove all affected plants, but I fear the worst. I spent ALL DAY setting up this dirted/planted 55 gallon. I won't be introducing any fish for sometime, so I was wondering if there was a way to poison the little [CENSORED]? I'm not concerned about rotting bodies messing with my cycle, because I don't even have a cycle to speak of yet. I don't want to fool around with waiting for them to grow and trying to catch them with blanched veggies in a bottle, I want nuclear holocaust on these [REDACTED] before they have a chance to grow. Anybody know any good poisons? I'm ready for war here! XD
  2. Hi all, I hope these questions aren't totally tedious, but I am thinking of getting a nerite snail since I know they don't propogate in fresh water. I know that I'd have to do a preventative QT for about a month or so in case of shell-travelers or sudden death, and I was thinking of doing a bucket-to-bucket method. However, I am concerned with additives I have in the tank, which include EI dosing, Excel, Prime/Safe, baking soda, and gH booster. My pH is around 8.2 which is stable and the temperature is at 73-75 degrees. I have a number of plants, but also feed the girls Repashy Super Green, which I am thinking of painting on a rock or something for the snail if it would eat it. Would this work for food? I am also concerned about sourcing the snails. Petsmart/Petco don't have them around here, and the fancier NYC fish store had really sick goldfish, so I don't trust their stock. On the other hand, there are many eBay snail options, so I was wondering if anyone has gone that route, though it would be hard to buy just one or so--they seem to come in fives. Anyway, sorry for all of the questions! I would appreciate any suggestions.
  3. I was planing on getting one or two for my Oranda tank. Ever since I put plants in I've got a bit of an algae problem. I'm trying to decide whether to get horned nerites, which are smaller than the average nerite snail or just zebra nerites. Is their any difference besides size? I wanted horned but I heard there is a choking hazard. Though I'm not too concerned cause my fish are relatively small. Anyone ever had horned nerite snails with goldfish?
  4. Hi there! So I have an apple snail that likes to take excursions out of the tank. Is this normal? The first time I found her on the floor, I couldn't even see how she was getting out of there. The only thing I can think of is that must be crawling up through the opening where the water flows in from the filter. An apple snail couldn't push up the lid--could it? Luckily, there is a plush carpet on the floor, and the cat did not find her first, but her shell does look a little beat up. It looks like there are some small white lines--not quite cracks--and there is a place where it looks like the pretty purple color has faded. I don't know how long she was out of the water each time. By the time I found her she had gone way up into the shell. After I put her back into the tank each time, she slowly came out and started behaving as normal. I need to find something to block the opening. I tried a towel today, but it got wet.
  5. I recently set up a 16 gallon tank--the original one my goldfish came in--as a betta/snail tank. The filter it came with is an Aqueon 20. Is this too much of a flow for a betta? It seems to send a pretty strong current right down the middle of the tank, and I can see all of the plants moving. What kind of filter would you put on a tank this size for a betta and snails? Thanks! Sara
  6. I recently added some new plants to my tank. After planting them I originally noticed a few snails on the sides. Now they are multiplying at a fast rate. They are about the size of a pencil eraser or smaller. I have an approximately 12 gallon tank full of guppies. Is it alright for me to have these snails and so many of them? Or what do I need to do to get them out! Thanks for all your advice!
  7. So, I'm cruising youtube, picking up ideas about how to care for my itty bitty snails and I see a video with a set-up very, very much like my own snail QT. I click on the picture and find it belonged to our very own Number 2.
  8. So a couple months ago I got a 6.6 gallon petco bookshelf tank. It was a betta tank, and then turned into a betta and shrimp tank. I usually call it the shrimp tank, even if Salvatore still rules it. xD I wanted to post some pictures of it, and its inhabitants. I was super happy to get a couple of oddly shaped marimo balls for only a dollar each! I have some water sprite, pygmy chain swords, micro swords, anubias, hygros and java moss all over my driftwood. When I redo it it's going to have crypts lutea as the majority plant. right now it's just chock full of baby shrimp. Theya re really prolifically breeding for me! so I am waiting for them to get larger and then I drew out plans to revamp the tank to something better to show them off: I have the exact piece of driftwood I drew. So I'm pretty happy. Before too long I will probably be giving shrimp away here!
  9. I was just wondering what species of snails I have? and do they look healthy? to me they don't I not sure what healthy snails look like without knowing what species they are.
  10. With everyone going on and on about their snails I had to share mine I've had them(i have two) for a while now and they do tend to hide very well this guy was out and about tending the anubias so I snapped a shot Thanks for looking
  11. What kinds can go with goldies? How do you feed them? Have they killed your plants? And is it necessary to QT them, and if so how?
  12. so i have this pleco( short for plecostomus) and i started feeding him cucumber chunks and sinking food today and i was wondering if, when he gets off special diet i can put some snails in the tank for him and my catfish to eat, and what kind of snail u wuld reccomend
  13. So the gang has been eating Repashy for about 2 weeks and I wanted to see if it's made a difference in their weight: Fluffy 59 grams Hercule Poirot 21 Jelly Bean 9 Emma Goldman 17 on July 19, Fluffy 56 grams Hercule 18 grams Emma 14 Jelly 9 Fluffy has been much less floaty since we switched to Repashy. They all seem to love it and are doing well if the weight gain is any indication. Jelly Bean has not put on any weight...it's kind of strange because I think he looks bigger...time will tell, I guess. Today when I did the water change, I noticed some white 'grains of salt' on Fluffy and Hercule. I decided to dose with .1% salt. So I had to move the snails out to their own container. Here's a picture. They have a plant, a bubbler and a net so they won't crawl out. They look pretty happy. I've put some Repashy in there for food. They don't seem to have discovered its deliciousness yet. That's the news from the Bubbles house for now! Happy Weekend to you all! mj
  14. I just recently picked up some Nerite snails and would like to drop in some algae wafers to make sure their getting plenty to eat as i don't have a ton of algae in the tank, but Pinto keeps chewing them up before the poor things can get to them! Is there anything i can do to make sure their getting enough food? Thanks in advance and sorry for so many questions lately!
  15. My snail wa just floating, I'm not sure why, he seems very healthy I think it's a air bubble. I take the smail down and add the smail under the pump, the smail trys to "snail" away and loses tracked and s back to the top lol. I just put the snail under the tank we got a nice show!
