Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt", bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc? Saturday, Miss Coco left lots of poop for me on the sponge filter... most of which is long and clear, and one in particular has some white stringiness in it? Of course, I got pics because only a "mom" would take photos of goldfish poop to post: Since it was pretty late, I figured I'd just do a water change in the morning. When I checked on her the next morning, she apparently dropped some eggs sometime during the night: She wasn't very interested in her duckweed breakfast, but I assumed she propbably feasted on her eggs and didn't think too much of it. During her water change, I noticed her mouth looked a bit off... what I mean is, the normally smooth slope from her forehead to her mouth looked to be indented just above the top part of her mouth. Just in case I missed something, I went back and looked at pics/videos of her from when I first got her. Sure enough, the previous pics/videos shows her looking normal and sassy. Something is definitely off and I'm not sure what it is: Here you can see the indentation above her mouth and in between her nasal bouquets This is the best picture that shows the bump on the top of her mouth Here's a video I got of here... It's tough to see what I'm talking about, but there is definitely a weird indentation: Here is a picture and video of how she looked before: I don't know how her mouth ended up looking like that? The only thing in the tank is the sponge filter... there isn't much for her to hurt herself. She also seems less active.... she's normally very feisty, but she's not as zippy Her mouth probably hurts? Also.... When I finished the water change, I noticed this! What IS that?! As soon as I finished taking the video, I siphoned that thing out fast!!
  6. So, Mandy said I have to take a crap load of pictures to get good ones. Half of that seemed to be true... So, here is a crap load of obscenely dark/light pictures. Enjoy! (the same one again, only lightened) i wish you guys could just see how truly amazing Monet's fins are... Mandy and DERP <3 lOOK AT derp'S NICE RYUKIN SHAPE! DERP's funny mouth, lol. Caught mid movement. Mandy's a total doll I tried taking some with flash, too. That face, tho... Mirror image.... they look so judgemental, tho Pretty girl Mandy is developing a hump, too Fat little bellies Fins for miles... They look so creepy with flash on Their eyes aren't actually foggy. Flash sucks. Marley is such a chunker Okay, so.... that's all. Maybe next time I can take photos that aren't blurry, foggy, too light or too dark. It's just my first try, after all. At least you vaguely know what they look like now!
  7. The water puppies had some veggie tank mates and I thought I'd share the cuteness (although SOME piggies didn't really want to share) Nom nom nom...
  8. Well, I popped into my local petco to take a look at their stock. I'm usually so picky that I buy less than 1 fish per year. BUT, they had 2 fish with potential to be EXACTLY what I've been looking for for a while! I'm SO excited :) :) Checking me out... I got lots of pics in the bag, because my QT totes are sort of a misty color so I can't get clear pictures through it Hoping they make it through QT okay! They've got a few marks/issues, but hopefully all goes away soon.
  9. i expect that situations will remain like this for the next few months. since i am waiting for the completion of our new warehouse and cannot accommodate these goofballs any differently for the time being. long awaited update (this is all the stock i currently have). thanks for watching
  10. Here is an article by Mr. Paul Van Allen, a training specialist working for Nikon, on how to take great pictures of fish. http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Learn-And-Explore/Article/h0ndz3t8/how-to-take-great-photos-at-the-aquarium.html I definitely recommend reading the article, but here are the salient points. Your settings should be: - manual - Auto ISO - 1/125 sec - f/5.6 - auto white balance - no flash Good luck, and happy picture taking. Here are some examples I hastily put together. This post has been promoted to an article
  11. Hey ya'll, while we were out running around today my wife came across this ryukin at petsmart and was curious to know if anybody here could tell her what color she could expect from this bronze/gold ryukin. Will it likely turn completely orange?
  12. Im new here and wanted to share my lone fry baby I never had the right combination of circumstances to breed my fish in the past. I actually had a very fertile female purple telescope, but never a male that could get the job done. Well, I brought home two new little telescopes 9 months ago. The calico started chasing my large female ryukin after being introduced to the main tank. She released eggs but I figured the little calico tele was too young to fertilize the eggs. I did several water changes following the event, attempting to maintain good parameters after all the activity/mess. You can imagine how surprised I was to spot the tiniest little specks swimming behind one of the plants! Here is the video of my little calico doing his damndest to help her out https://www.instagram.com/p/14eqAkxAOt/?taken-by=jenna_ramblesI In total I found 5 fry. After two weeks there were only two. I tried not to get my hopes up, knowing the odds of getting strong healthy formed fry was slim. They grew really nicely. The green one was always more voracious and a bit bigger. Unfortunately the pinkie got an abrasion on its tiny nose. I treated with dips and very clean water. She looked to be responding nicely..and then I had to leave for vacation for 5 days...and in that time she passed. I had a feeling. She was just starting to show yellow colored spots and had a few tiny nacreous scales like mama. Oh well. I pressed on with my last tough, green fry.! Im happy to say he continues to grow well! I began grooming him and his dad a few months ago. My fry doubled his weight and caught up to his dad in only 4 weeks! AND finally losing the green and going red/orange/white
  13. So I have 2 golfball pearlscales and an oranda in my main tank. These came from the same source and live well together. They are kind of bumbling goofballs. They take their time eating, each taking a piece of food, hanging out chewing, then search around for more kind of like blind squirrels. I am pretty sure the oranda is a female. She seems to enjoy bouncing the pearlscales around like beach balls (not aggressive, just like... Bump. Oops! Sorry, my bad! Haha...) I have a ryukin in a QT who is similar size to the oranda. I am pretty sure he is male. He is a totally different personality. Like a shark. When I drop food in he has everything scooped up before it even gets halfway to the bottom. I could drop it at different ends at the same time and he'd still get it. When you walk by he's like Hey! Hey! You there, yeah You, I'm talking to YOU! Anyway, so I'm getting to the point where I planned to put them together but I'm a little worried that the ryukin might get aggressive with the others or beat up my lady oranda trying to spawn. I've heard of and was warned about ryukins eating the wen of orandas so that is in the back of my mind too. Would anyone else be concerned about putting them together? I'm thinking I will at least try it and keep a close eye on the situation. If he is too much I could put him in my pond but I'm a little bummed about that and a little worried doing it just as winter is approaching. Ergh. Thoughts? Thanks for reading,
  14. So as you know, I recently lost my beloved goldfish to the giant blue pond in the sky and completely redid my tank. Although I am going to fishless cycle it, I figured it wouldn't hurt to have its inhabitants in QT while I awaited their tank cycle. Kill two birds with one stone, eh? Anywho, without further ado, the fishes! The oranda is named Martin, and the ryukin is named (tentatively) Frasier. Any name suggestions are welcome, too, as these names aren't set. I picked the ryukin for his tiny stature and cute coloration, whereas the oranda I bought solely for his friendly demeanor. In the store, he followed my finger faithfully all over the tank. And now, he is faithfully following his little friend! They are inseparable. I believe that Martin is turning orange. I'm not sure if you can see it in this video, but his underside is tinted orange. . . Not sickly yellow like jaundice, but like a color change. And I love his fins! So you can get a better idea on their sizes;
  15. Hello friends, Euthanizing has always and will always be a very sensitive topic. unfortunately, one of my fish needed to be Euthanized. i checked our site and realized there was no video demonstration on how this is done. so, whilst i was contemplating if i should euth my fish and as he took a turn for the worse, i decided that i would make the video to demonstrate how i managed this successfully & humanely. Please understand, there are many illnesses that can be treated, many fish that look like they are knocking on death's door and depending on what the health issue is, some fish can and have been brought back to good health from these conditions with the dedicated help of our wonderful Moderating Team and our Experienced Members/Friends. please do seek help by posting a thread before you decide to euthanize your fish. ********************************************************************************************** ***WARNING*** The following video demonstration shows a fish being sedated and then receiving an anesthesia overdose. Please do not play the following video if you feel that seeing a fish being Euthanized will affect you in any way. **********************************************************************************************
  16. This is Satsuma. I bought her in a moment of weakness early in the Summer at the local WalMart. She spent the rest of the Summer in the swimming pool that I use for a pond. I just caught her about a month ago and moved her to an aquarium. She rewarded me by dropping eggs into the net that I was moving her in! And a bonus shot of one side of my "fish room". That's it. Let me know what you guys think about Satsuma.
  17. I got tired of not having anything in the tank, so I put some fake plants in there. Sorry if the quality is bad, it looks amazing on my phone but not so amazing on youtube. : /
  18. Here are new photos of the little brats Parents gave me new LED hoods for Christmas, makes such a big difference!
  19. So this is my first video i've shared on here and the first featuring my new 38 gallon tank. I am aware that it appears my Oranda has flukes. Just noticed today, but was planning to treat after I put the new one in. Anyways, let me know what you think and like/share/comment on the video if you like too! Any advice is welcome as well.
  20. Here are the pictures you asked for! Artie,Vinny, and Moe (comet) seem to like their new home. I know Moe will grow too large for the tank, we will be renovating our outdoor pond come spring, so he will live there when it's ready. There are some small species with them (cherry barbs, glowlight and zebra danios, platies cories, and a few loaches). There are a few rasboras , a gold barb, and a tetra that were too fast to catch, but when I catch them they will be moved to the tropical planted tank. Everyone is doing great, and they all seem happy. I just rearranged the decor so the sand made things a bit cloudy. The tank has mostly plastic plants so far, but also has some small live anubias and what I think is ludwigia Also here is my yellow-finned Hillstream loach (Gastromyzon viriosus)
  21. So I went to check out a local fish breeder with the intention of scooping out a new potential addition to my 55 gal. I was thinking of getting a smaller guy since I feel that the younger you get a fish the better but I ended up getting a big guy! A red/white butterfly tail ryukin. I just couldn't say no to this fish so I had to get him. I am a bit concerned that he's so large (I'm intimated by his bulk!) but I'm hoping he'll be ok. He seems healthy enough, not a scale out of place. He was trying to eat my dad's shirt through the plastic bag on his way home so we know he's got a good appetite! He's currently in my 18 gal QT with an airstone. I added prime, baking soda (I've got pH issues) and .1% salt. I'm thinking of fasting him a few days then starting him on peas on the 3rd day. I'm debating start the prazirpro on his 3rd day too, don't want to stress him out too much. On our way home we decided to stop by PetSmart and I ended up falling for this tiny oranda. We justified it since we've got a 20 gallon sitting all empty like and since we needed a place to store our router cables and the tank stand just happened to do a good job of it. He was also extremely lively and cute... we just couldn't resist! Here's hoping their QT goes smoothly! (Not that the little oranda will be going into the 55, just the ryukin!)
  22. The fishies and I had a photoshoot the other evening, and I'm going to post the results here now! I've been finishing up summer classes but everything's done now. Finally have some time to leave you guys updates I took a few extra of Pickle because he had been sick...and is doing SO much better! Without further ado... Speckle and Mr. B awaiting food The big man, Mr. B himself!!! Clem, Mr. B, and Pickle "Thanks for saving me!!" "Ready for my close-up!" "FOOOOOOOD!!!!" Doofus #1 (Mr. B) and Doofus #2 (Clem) "Hi!!!!!" Leonard the apple snail on cleanup duty Dorito! who is doing much better buoyancy-wise since I lowered the water level Last but not least, Juno the three-legged cat, sitting on the empty QT (her favorite spot) Thanks for looking!!!
  23. Here are my goldies as promised, sorry it took so long. They have tripled in size since we got them in April Artie is the calico, lion head i believe, and Vinny is red and white and I think a ryukin? They seem to only hang out at the top when I'm nearby, probably a result of the hand feeding XD [http://s1353.photobucket.com/user/Pandadragon/media/photo4_zps62d89ebb.jpg.html?filters[user]=141012291&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=0] [http://s1353.photobucket.com/user/Pandadragon/media/photo5_zpsa04df6a6.jpg.html?filters[user]=141012291&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=3] [http://s1353.photobucket.com/user/Pandadragon/media/photo1_zps791dd431.jpg.html?filters[user]=141012291&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=1] Here is their tank, 29 gallons: http://s1353.photobucket.com/user/Pandadragon/media/photo3_zps4be67081.jpg.html?filters[user]=141012291&filters[recent]=1&sort=1&o=4
  24. Chiba has moved into her new tank! So.. I celebrated by talking a whole bunch of pictures of her ^^ I want the tank to be clean and classy.
  25. Or so she says! Allow me to introduce to you, Chubba! She was previously Mikey's fish. She lacks proper anal fins and has a problem with her swim bladder but the redness you see is a result of a genetic component that causes the blood to show more than normal. She is two years old and has always had this appearance. c: Chubba lives an otherwise normal and happy life with a fellow ryukin named Lin and a hibuna named Jade. I feed her in this little container (for now, until she outgrows it) so she always gets enough to eat. She's very spoiled and the tanks little princess. :heart And a photobomb! Thanks for looking!
