  1. Woke up today and Rosco's staring back at me with globes as eyes and fat lips. Ugh... Popeye! I knew I should have taken the time to do my regular maintenance, that I ALWAYS do, during these busy last couple of weeks. Nevertheless, I didn't and now he is like this. My go pro is charging right now so I'll get you guys a vid soon. I've already moved him to a 15 gal hospital with an air stone and added 1.5 tsp epsom salt, triple sulfa, and API general cure (contains 250 mg Metronidazole). He is eating just fine, a little hesitant but I think that is just because he is in a new environment. He bottom sits when I'm not around (I'm sure the pressure behind his eyes is giving him a serious migraine) but when I come over he makes an effort to swim around. Dorsal fin is sky high so I at least know he is sorta feeling okay (he usually tucks it if he isn't feeling well). I added him to the hospital tank about an hour ago. Idk if it is just me wanting him to get better but I feel like the swelling in his face has gone down just slightly. His lady friend, Storm, is doing fine in the main tank. No signs of popeye but I don't know if it is contagious. Is it? Please help me fix Rosco. I was thinking about making medicated food but Idk where to start. I have the Metro that I can mix with the gel food but I don't know how much. Each packet contain 250 mg of Metro. What dose should I give him, if any? On hand I have: Epsom Salt, API General Cure, Metro, Tetracycline, and Triple Sulfa. I've heard that many people have success with oxytetracycline. I know that it is the bigger and better improved version of tetracycline. I wanted to ask you guys about it before I was to add that to the hospital. I don't wanna go antibiotic crazy but i know that popeye leads to dropsy. Dropsy's tricky because it you don't throw all your stones at it you might not get to later on but you don't want to compromise the fish's health either. Any help is greatly appreciated. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) Unknown because I changed the water as soon as I saw his bulging eyes * Nitrite Level(Tank) Unknown because I changed the water as soon as I saw his bulging eyes * Nitrate level(Tank) Unknown because I changed the water as soon as I saw his bulging eyes. I'm sure it was high because it's been two weeks since water changes and I haven't had my pothos in the water like I usually do to suck up the nitrates. * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0.25 ppm * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 ppm * Nitrate level(Tap) 10 ppm * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) Ranges from 7- 7.6 depending on CO2 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.6 because of supersaturated gases, drops to 7.6 after 24 hrs of degassing Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? 2. How can you tell if a telescope eye goldfish has Popeye?? I thought two of mine had Popeye and treated them for well over a month with Epsom salt with no change and the eyes haven't got any bigger so could it just be eye growth?? And finally my new little telescope I got a while ago is starting to get a ring around his eyes but he is growing so I think it is eye growth. So how do you tell the difference between eye growth and Popeye??
  3. Hi guys, My two year old Black moor's left eye has become noticeably larger. This eye has always been a little bit larger but as of late it has become twice the size of the other eye. I recently moved back from college,(2 and a half months ago) and during this move a had huge ammonia spike in my tank, coupled with the tap water at my new residence being terrible. I have since stabilized the water: ammonia, nitrites, nitrates are all 0. I was wondering what I should do to go about treating this if it is popeye? Thanks!!
  4. Darcy and Murdoch my two telescopes have had Popeye for some time but Murdoch doesn't really have it anymore and his eyes are pretty much back to normal but I'm really worried about Darcy as his eyes are extremely swollen. Darcy has always had huge eyes but now they are really swollen and bulging and they move inside the layer of skin or whatever covers the eyes and there is a lot of fluid as well surrounding his eyes. Darcy also headstands and his eyes look like they may fall out. I can fill out the form later and maybe get pics for tomorrow but I don't know what to do. I have tried Epsom salt and am still treating him with it for about eight days at a go and then leaving time between treatments of Epsom please help. Thanks
  5. Hello! I was told to come and ask this in the forums here. My black moor that I have had about 4 months had had what I believed to be pop eye since I had gotten her. At first it seemed to just be one eye larger than the other and when a friend told me it looked like pop eye I did the water changes and salt baths and that seemed to be working. The swelling went down I just moved her to a larger tank and she was doing fine (it's been up about two months now) Until just recently I noticed her eye was swelling again, and upon closer inspection the pupil is super dilated and there seems to be a bubble inside the pupil. The eye has gotten HUGE and I am not sure what to do... She is still very energetic and feisty. Her appetite is still excellent so she is all good there. She's he boss of the tank so my oranda doesn't pick on her at all. I did a water change last night and gave her another salt soak. I won't be able to afford any medications until the 17th when I get paid again and I fear it may fall out if i gets any bigger. Any advice would be awesome, thank you! In the first image here you can see in her reflection how huge and swollen her left eye is compared to the other. Here is a frontal view, hopefully you can see it.
  6. Hi guys, Unfortunately Mario somehow managed to get himself wedged behind the outflow pipe of the filter today. When I released him his abdomen was all squashed on one side and he has popeye on that same side. He's been lively enough this evening and has been eating, but doesn't seem as in control of his buoyancy as usual. He's currently in a quarantine tank which has been treated with salt and melafix. I'm really worried about him, I'm especially worried that he might have sustained some internal injuries and develop dropsy. I would really like to have some antibiotics to hand if the need arises, specifically metronidazole. Would anyone in the US (or anywhere that isn't the UK) be willing to post me some Metro-meds or equivalent? Of course I would pay generously, I just desperately want Mario to be ok. Please please message me if you can help. Kate x

Hi everyone, I'm quite worried for one of my black moor eye, that has suddenly become giant. You can find all the infos above, I only see the giant eye, no other signs on the body or behaviour. Yesterday I fed them a tangerine clove, it was the first time. I only had fed a half clove a couple of weeks ago. What can I do? I'm going to attach a couple of pics as soon as I manage to

Popeye \: Still appears to have raised scales [*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? I haven't seen him eat for a couple of days Poor Kingsley is not doing as well as I thought. Last night I noticed his eye was looking bad, but didn't have good lighting to be sure. Now it is obvious. It is much larger than the other, and it is clouded over. He also still appears to have raised scales, though this might be full on dropsy by now >.< Even though they seemed to be going down at first. I have kept his water completely clean At first I thought his lack of energy was because of boredom so I put a plant in with him. It was disinfected before being placed with him. Now he has popeye \: I was hoping there is something I can do to help him, but unfortunately I am strapped for cash after rent, bills, and a couple of projects that were put into place before this happened. I am hoping with the start of the holidays we will be making more money, but for now all I have on hand is salt and epsom salt \: I might be able to get metro sometime next week, but by then I don't know if I can help him ): He is 3 years old and has lived in squalor in the care of a drug addict who couldn't have cared less for him. His water was probably changed maybe 4-5 times. After she was evicted we found him there, and took him in. He had raised scales. He had been eating bloodworms when I fed them to him but he stopped about 3 days ago \: I thought I forgot to dose his water with prime so I did that when I noticed he wasn't eating. So I tried again 2 days ago. Then last night I saw his eye looked weird and it was my fishes fasting day. So now I am here. Poor Kingsley ): It seems like he has the worst luck. Oh, and that black stuff is just the remains of the old substrate that hid in the rims.
  9. So after having successfully gotten my female betta thru a nasty case of bloat/dropsy, my male betta decides that it'd be an AWESOME time to get popeye. This on top of two new cichlids that had to be QT'd aaaand that's a whole 'nother horror story I won't get into here.... So...yeah....Popeye. Not the sailor man. I noticed his left eye lookin a little odd yesterday and today it's definitely pokin out a bit more than it should be. I did about a 75% water change (he's in the kitchen next to the sink so I just use a mug and the squirty hose thingy on the faucet to refill, so easy!) tonight and I saw on a website that it needs to be done every 3 days or so. They also mentioned Ampicilin? Amoxicilin? One of those. I'll have to call around tomorrow to see if anyone carries either of those. Should I add salt for now? I have some "Lifeguard" as well, but it's mostly being used on the QT'd cichlids.
  10. I have a common goldie who is not doing too well lately.. She has had the recurring bouts with popeye. She seemed to be doing much better and hadn't had any trouble for quite a while but a few days ago her eyes started looking a little puffy again. I kept an eye on her but they didn't seem to be getting any worse and she seemed to be acting all right. However, today I went to feed them and i noticed that she was not doing well. Her eyes were a bit more puffy and all cloudy (which is new) and she was swimming slightly tilted to the side. I've moved her to my hospital tank and have tried to get her to eat some MG, but she is refusing. She is obviously feeling pretty crummy because she let me hold her and hand feed her some pellets (something she never has allowed me to do before). Shortly after I put the pellets in her mouth though, she promptly spit them back out. Ugh. I tried just dropping some pieces of MG in beside her to try and get her attention but when I came back a while later she still hadn't touched them. She seems to just stay near the surface of the water tilted at a slight angle with her head upwards. I'm not sure what to do or if I am using the right treatment. Please help!
