  1. So, after research and what felt like every review available in the internet, I have decided to go with two Fluval fx6 canister filters for my 500 liter (132USG) tank. They just work better for me than the Sunsuns/Aquatop that I also considered, because I saw quite a few videos/reviwes saying Sunsuns can easily loose 45% of their GpH power when they are filled, and I calculated that even if Fluvals will loose as much (so that both units would be working on 55% of claimed GpH), the Fluvals would still go over the 7x GpH circulation recomended for the canister filters of my tank size, while at 55% the SunSuns wouldn't reach even the minimum of 5x. So they just work for me and my tank size. The filters come with some media in already, like sponges around every media tray, coarser(?) sponge pads and (what I think is) decent amount of ceramic rings. (all shown here along the filter parts, as in most of the unboxing videos I saw). I don't think this is enough media for the filters though, and would like some opinions on what to get in addition. Would move ceramic rings do it? Or should I get something else? There are so many options they feel quite overwhelming.
  2. I've been looking up different filter media that would help me mantain good water quality and help sort out a problem I've been having lately with ammonia levels in my tropical tank. I read some reviews that spoke highly of lava filter media. It's supposed to keep water cristal clear and remove smells. It may as well be a decent substitute for carbon ( for regular use, not after medicating) So I bought these two: Have you guys tried them? Any impressions to share?
  3. Hi there ya all! This may come as very dumb question but still I have to ask. Explanation comes frist though. I want to add some more bags of crushed coral to my hob filter and already have a bag that was left when I took apart my tropical aquarium. There I used it as gravel to cover the bottom. The one that I didn't I use I have converted in filter media. So the question is: can I use the coral that has been in my tropical tank or this is a bad idea and I should by new one? Should I boil it to sterilize it and be able to reuse it?
  4. Hi, I have just set up my new canister filter. This is the first canister filter I have owned. It came with a whole range of media, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what each type of media for canister filters does, and where it should be (ie. which basket)? I have: Filter wool Noodles (ceramic?) Bio balls carbon I also purchased some biohome plus, and some better grade filter wool in coarse med and fine which is still in the post. But it led me to think.... There might be better options out there... somewhere... What filter media is out there, what does it do, and where should it be in the 'water course'? Does anyone have a list of these, or can list them for me? Thanks so much!
  5. Hello, People of Koko's! This week has been pretty hectic with school starting, my sister being in the hospital having a long-needed hysterectomy, and me being out of commission a full day after sedation for a medical procedure of my own. So, only yesterday did I notice that my AquaClear30 was plugged in, yet doing NOTHING besides having an extremely hot motor. It must have broken several days before, because the beneficial bacteria, residual gunk, and algae had had plenty of time to die and rot. As soon as I lifted the filter media out to clean it, A HORRID STENCH PERMEATED THE ENTIRE ROOM. In my partner's words: "It smells like you burned a bag of poop down here." I threw out the way too far gone fiberglass rectangle that had been on the bottom of the basket. Then I washed and washed and washed and washed the remaining media (a sponge and a big bag of ceramic pieces) with soap and chlorinated tap water, then I washed and washed and washed them just in tap water until there was not even a hint of soap. I put the sponge and bag of ceramic pieces on paper towels to dry. Today, they're BONE DRY, but still smell sorta like mildew. Is that normal? Are they safe to put back into a working filter? I know that the normal stuff in filters doesn't smell like roses, so I wouldn't expect filter media to ever come completely clean of odors. EDIT: No worries about my goldfish! My faithful AquaClear70 is still working perfectly. 45 gallons. Three 4-inch and under goldfish. Whole lotta algae and scraggly nibbled-on mossballs. The parameters are normal. And today I've done my usual just-enough-water-to-cover-the-goldfish water changes. I need to know how much of the filter is beyond saving before exchange/replace it.
  6. So I just got a 55 gallon last weekend and was moving the bacteria (in filter pad) from my 10 gallon growout tank into a Penguin 350 and forgot one thing....the conditioner. ... I added the conditioner as quickly as possible after forgetting about it (in 1 minutes time) - are the bacteria still living? Or has the tap already killed it already? On the bright side I also have an extra filter floss running in the 10g filter so I sould be fine - but starting with more helpful bacteria is better... Also, once the bacteria has been transferred, how long would it take until I could put my fish in? Thanks again.
  7. hey guys i have a quick question about the whole using filter media from an established tank to help cycle a new tank... how long would you keep the established filter media in the new filter for?... is it ok to just leave it there for until the end of the cycle?? or just use it for a couple days and toss it? thanks alot..
