  1. Hi everyone, I am setting up a new tank and I wanted something quieter than a HOB filter so I was thinking of getting a Fluval 406 canister filter for up to 100 gallons. Would you recommend adding a HOB filter too? I plan on having 3-4 fancies in it (oranda, ranchus). Thank you Kayla D.
  2. So in less than a month I would like to switch to a canister filter on my 33 gallon tank and I'm wondering which to get as I have been looking at the fluval 306 and 406 but I don't know which to get or if I should get a different one all together any help is appreciated
  3. Hi, I am trying to set my canister filter up in my tank. Does anyone have any tips for where the in and out should be to create the best 'water currents' and to clean the tank the most efficiently? My tank is 122cmLx38cmDx46cmH and this is my filter: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/131247811389?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Any hints would be greatly appreciated!
  4. So I am thinking of getting canister filters for my fish tanks as then I would only need one filter and it would allow for more media (which will help in my overstocked tanks) and use less electricity as then I only have to run one filter making my dad happy . I have one problem I don't know which ilter to buy, well I know what filter I want but I don't know what flow rate I should get as this is the filter type I want to get http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002NF5LDQ/ref=dra_a_rv_mr_hn_it_P1400_1000?tag=dradisplay0bb-21&ascsubtag=389b921dff5d70f831c05c04f70f3e9f_S . I have been trying to choose between the three size ranges of the filters but I don't know which ones to get for a 32 gallon aquarium and a 33 gallon aquarium. Also I want to eventually upgrade (my dad will say no but I will ) so I want the filters to be good to use on a new tank which I want to be in the 300-500 litre range for my 5 telescope goldfish but it just depends on what I can find second hand (but my dad will make me buy them brand new ) Which filter would you buy out of those three??
  5. I just ordered this http://bestchoiceproducts.com/products/fish-canister-external-3-stage-filter-pump-for-aquarium-pond-pump-fish-tank to add to my 55 gallon to supplement the Sun Sun canister I already have running. Does anyone have experience with the Best Choice canister? How do you like it?
  6. I finally got it set up and running. I took a cutt off a piece of filter/sponge from the old HOB and put it in the canister for seeding. I suspect that there's going to be a slight ammonia jump while the bacteria get set up. I'm hoping that there's enough in the tank so it's isn't worrisome. Anyway this is hour one review and I will try to update this in a few months. So, with out further adieu: Ordered the product from Amazon - it was about 20 dollars cheaper than Doctor's foster and smith. The parts seem sturdy and put together well. So well in fact the hose was a bit of a pain to get on all the way - but I don't want a flood so I will take it as a plus. The installation was fairly easy, the only slightly annoying thing with the installation was that there are 3 manuals for it in different languages. So you have to read e.g. the English section in each of the three manuals. It does however come with a CD to put on your computer that has all the manuals, all three of them....Better would have been to have a manual with say, English, french and Spanish for example and the other manuals with different languages. So you only have to keep the one manual. Anyway, my initial thought on this filter is man this thing is quiet! I mean, I whisper louder than this thing runs and the hum of my laptop fan is much louder. I have yet to own a filter quieter than this one, I find myself glancing at it to make sure it is actually running because I can't hear it! A bit about the electronic features: I like the adjustable flow option with a button rather than messing with the intake valve to the canister like my old Fluval. It has an automatic option, the filter is supposed to adjust power as it gets more filled up with what I will call "gold fish love" -this is also the default as I understand it; a 12h bio function (which I haven't quite figured out yet I need to find the manual)- basically you can have a higher flow during the day and a lower one at night so the fish can sleep; there's also stream and constant flow options - if I remember right, the stream will do a cycle flow, it will occasionally put out a higher flow and then go back to a lower flow and the constant flow is well...constant. The canister filter has a service indicator light that tells you how long you have until the filter needs servicing - at the moment it says 6 months (i'll keep an eye on that to be sure). Now if I can just find that manual I can figure out how to use all of these settings. There is a TON of room for media, 4 baskets worth. I have the two bottom filled with Fluval pre-filter media, the next one up Fluval biomax and the top one filled with Eheim substrate pro. This thing is pretty nifty. The spray bar appears to be agitating the surface in a smooth calm way. I see the plants swaying a bit with the current which hopefully will mean that this will be the only filter I will need. I still need to pick up the purigen and put it in. I'm not sure what rack to put it on? Thoughts on that anyone? My only complaints are at this point the size of it, it won't fit under my aquarium stand - but the trade off is that it will be more accessible for cleanings. The other minor complaint is the ever so pretty green tubing and it didn't come prefilled with media, I had to buy my own. I spent quite a bit on media. You should see my poor living room, it is covered with fish supplies/boxes from amazon. So photos will be out for awhile until I can get this place cleaned up. I only have about 4 weeks left of school so probably by then. Things I'm considering getting for it later on down the road are the internal heater and I'm not sure but I think there might even be a UV sterilizer for it too. Overall, thus far I am very happy with my purchase.
  7. I was thinking of getting this for my 55 in addition to my other HOBs (I have 3, will take the smallest out to replace). It would be my first canister. Is it a good choice? It says it's for 159 gallons and is the most expensive. Saw a couple people on here say they have this for their 55g...otherwise I would have gone with the 66g one or something.. WHY is it $278.99 on Petsmart's website and $139.99 on Amazon???!! ( http://www.amazon.com/Classic-2217371-External-Canister-Gallons/dp/B0002AQXVI <--- is this even the right one? Sorry if I wasn't supposed to post the link?) Is it worth it? thanks!
  8. I am getting ready to set up my old 55 gal to consolidate 2 tanks. (My dad drove is 800 miles across country for me). I was going to use AquaClear 70 with cultured media, but I know I need another filter. My dilemma is... Should I get a canister filter and if so which one or should I just get another HOB? I like the idea of it being out of sight. The extra work cleaning out does not bother me. I want to do the right thing for the fish. #2 issue= One of my ranchus really does not like current and I need to baffle the AquaClear. What would be the best and safest way to do this? I have heart of the plastic bottle way, but am worried about sharp edges. Also if I put filter floss or sponge in the water fall area, how do I secure it? Sorry for the wordiness of this post, but would really appreciate any and all suggestions!
  9. This morning my big canister filter got delivered. 1800LPH. It's HUGE! Here's one of my cats, Willow, helping me show how big it is: I only have a couple of questions. The instructions are woefully inadequate. Do I take the ceramic noodles and activated carbon out of their little mesh bags or keep them in them? There are three baskets; one has foam, one has carbon, one has ceramic noodles (they are all about 1/4-1/3 full with the little baggies). Where do the bioballs go? What order do I put them in? I'm thinking ceramic noodles at the bottom, carbon next level up and the foam on top? Thanks!
