  1. https://youtu.be/6WOXkLrYAtI Hey guys, I was referred to this place by my local fish store. I am hoping that you guys can help me out here. I had my goldfish for the last 7 years. I do water change every week. Sometimes I will skip it and do it every 2 weeks. All was fine till recently I saw him sitting at the bottom of the tank and I tested the water in the tank and found out the nitrate level was over the roof (80ppm). Nitrite and amonia level were both 0ppm. I am not sure why this happened. Recently my wall was painted, not sure if that has anything to do with it. I have quarantined it in a small tank with water from my other aquarium - water level is stable. I have attached a video of the situation. Any help or advice would be appreciated. 20181205_173844.mp4
  2. Hey everybody, Thanks in advance for reading. I'll get right to the point. I have two beautiful goldfish and they both have some kind of infection which is causing them to break out in white bumps. I have had fish for many years and I take the care of my pets extremely seriously, like to the point of OCD. I'll let you know right now I have no pictures to share because the spots simply do not show up on camera. I took over 200 pics and none of them show clearly what the bumps look like (so frustrating). But I will tell you everything I can about the situation and I hope PLEASE PLEASE that someone will have some advice. I've had the fish for 6 months. They are both about 2 inches long and I have them in a 30 gallon, bare bottom tank. The tank is extremely well filtered with 2 aquaclear 70s. ph has been at 7.5 for the entire time I've had the fish. Ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates below 5. All these parameters have been consistent. After a month I noticed a few of these white bumps on fish#1's tail. After another month there were many bumps on the tail fins. A few bumps/spots appeared on the side fish#1 as well as on her head, and I've seen something that looks like mild fin rot on her. These seem to be different infections but I don't know. The bumps are consistent in size, maybe 2mm across. This is NOT an ich infection. It looks nothing like ich and the ich treatments I've tried have not worked. After 6 months and many treatments attempted, fish#1's tail is covered in bumps, and now they have started to appear on fish#2's tail fins. I should mention the fish eat normally, swim around fine, show no signs of distress, lethargy or fin clamping. Treatments I've tried: - 1 tspn salt /gallon: no effect - 1 tbsp salt / gallon: cleared most white spots after a week of treatment, but they appeared again almost overnight after putting her back in the regular tank with no salt. * important point: the spots change between bright white and cloudy white, and almost invisible, but they seem to remain in place - Prazipro - Kanamycin - MinnFinn: had to stop mid treatment as the fish were very stressed - Melafix, Pimafix - increased tank temperature (82F) - 82F + 1 tbsp salt Unfortunately none of these treatments have had any lasting effect. None of them have actually had any real effect on the infection except the 1 tbsp salt / gallon and I think that only suppressed them. PLEASE let me know anything you think I should try. I seriously love these gorgeous fish, but if I can't figure this out soon, I feel compelled to euthanize them, which would absolutely break my heart into a million pieces, so please help!!
  3. Hi everyone. This is the third post I've made, now, concerning Dorito, my ranchu. She's not been well for a long time, and it seems like I've pretty much tried everything I can think of. I don't know what else to do. I'm posting again because she's not better and also because she's now started to get sores on her belly from bottom sitting... Here's a background: I got Dorito from ECR back in December (I think) of last year. She was awesome, adjusted well to the tank, got along with the other fish, and had no swimming issues for about 3 months or so. Then, she started to look like she was losing her balance, and eventually became a habitual bottom-sitter. She's been like this at least since March-April of this year. I treated for flukes, multiple times. I gave her 0.3% salt baths, I treated her with MMs twice, for a full course. I talked with Cynthia to see if she could think of anything that might be wrong. Nothing helped. Dorito still eats readily, hasn't lost any weight...she just looks so sad and is always in the corner at the bottom of the tank. It's almost as if she's too heavy to swim - when she tries to move upward, she can't. Her head weighs her back down. Here are my test results: Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank) 10-20 * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) 0 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8-8.2 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.6++ Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? * Water temperature? 74˚F * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 75 gallons, 1.5 years * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Prazi treatment, spring 2014; "heavy" prazi treatment July-August 2014 (according to rules found here in the masterpost), MMs 2x over the summer, salt baths over the past 2 weeks, every few days * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? See description * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? See description Really hoping you guys can help. I feel so sad looking at her on the bottom of the tank. But...she still eats. Sometimes, lately, she's been listing to one side...
  4. Bubba is a 3-inch long common goldfish I've had for a couple years and I've started to notice something strange. He's starting to develop small black dots on the top of his head. I've noticed no external parasites and he seems entirely active and happy, so I'm a little confused. Is he going to get ich? Is he developing breeding stars? I know those are both white but I'm running out of ideas. I've also been feeding my fish color-enhancing granules from tetra, as well as some carrots, lettuce, and bits of worm much more recently so I wonder if that has something to do with it. Please help, I'm VERY worried
  5. Hi all, I know you probably remember that I posted about a month ago, about Dorito being sick. Well, she had a good QT and did a full 14 days of MMs, then 14 days of Jump Start, and seemed ok. A week or so ago, I noticed one of her tail fins was frayed - but didn't think too much of it, since Mr. B has been nippy lately and I saw him nip her tail. The fraying didn't get any worse over the course of the week, so I forgot about it. Today, I notice that she has more fraying and she has two black spots on her nacreous scales - I will try to get a picture, but she's very spooked by me so it's hard. This isn't a burn-type black...it's more like a surface level color. It's completely circular, not fuzzy at all, and is only occurring on her nacreous scales. She's still been bottom sitting, but she was doing that before, during, and after meds...and has been doing that for months. It's almost like her head is too heavy for her body. Anyway, here are my params. What do you think this could be? I'm going out of state tomorrow and won't be back till Sunday (of course...darn fish) so a QT makes me uneasy as there would be no one to make sure the water parameters don't get toxic. Could it be a fungus? I JUST treated extensively for flukes, and haven't added anything new to the tank at all since then. Help! Poor Dorito Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank) 20 + (doing a WC tomorrow morning) * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) 0 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.2 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) >8.6 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API freshwater test kit * Water temperature? 74 F * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 75 gal, 1.5 years * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Two eheim classic canister filters, 2217-37 * How often do you change the water and how much? 2x per week, avg. 70% per WC * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? Tuesday, 70% * How many fish in the tank and their size? 6 fish; two 5in, two 4in, two 3in * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Seachem prime, Vita Chem freshwater vitamins, Buff it Up * What do you feed your fish and how often? peas, NLS thera A, NLS goldfish mix, brine shrimp, bloodworms, plankton, fresh veggies, etc etc usually 2-3x per day * Any new fish added to the tank? No * Any medications added to the tank? No * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. See paragraph above * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? See above
  6. Hi everyone. I tried to find the questionnaire, but seem to have misplaced it. Will gladly fill it out if someone links me, thanks! I'm writing because it seems like my little ECR, Dorito, is having problems. I've emailed Cynthia about this, but I know she's busy and wanted to get a thread started here as well Dorito started out as a very active, bright, friendly fish. She was loving her new tankmates and hand feeding. About 3-4 months after I got her (I've had her for 6 months now) she started sleeping vertically, and becoming less social. Now, she shies away from the light, doesn't like contact with other fish, is afraid of me, and seems like her head is too heavy for her body. She's still got a good appetite but is a clumsy swimmer and tends to open her mouth strangely? This happened since I got her, but I figured it was a ranchu thing. Now I'm not sure... She also seems to have small "twitches" at her anal fins/tail fin when she sits still, or when I move her to another tank. These twitches seem like a nerve response, but I don't know what to make of them, and they don't happen all the time. I have her in a QT now just to observe her, but I'm not sure what else to do. Any help or advice? I'm really puzzled by her change in behavior Thanks! EDIT: also, poops are normal and have always been normal. No discoloration or torn fins, and no white spots anywhere that I can tell. Her eyes are bright but she looks "sad"
  7. In the last month I have lost two fish, an ulcer and one to sudden death. Prior to this I lost my first fish ever from ulcer. Each death was different. The first was wen ulcer, (Tiger) it formed very slowly. Took a long time to become an obvious issue. Only became aggressive towards the end. He was a new fish, had a spot on its wen that didn't look bad or sunken or gross. QT him for 3 of 4 weeks I don't quite remember... then one or two months later the blemish started to sink and became the ulcer. Second was a sudden death. Fine one day, no signs of stress, lumps bumps spots or ulcers. Started bottom sitting one afternoon, thought it may have been constipated. In morning found him dead ? Third was fine one day, next had a angry ulcer at her tail. Its progression was fast, suspected syst that burst then got Infected but cannot be sure. All symptoms and progressions are different, but the outcome the same. I have racked my brain and the Internet to find answers but the only conclusion is "ill never know". My gut tells me its not contagious due to the fact the characteristics of each lead up to death have been different, but I do not open my fish to see if the problem starts on the inside. (Nor do I want to) But I cannot ignore the fact I never had a problem for 2 years until my first babie got sick.... which makes me think It could be contagious. Aaargh! Anyways. I have chosen to assume it is contagious and launch OPPERATION QT Im going to treat both tanks as if they were brand new stock. Round of prazi & salt. Bi daily WC. 3 months. I have chosen 3 months because it took approximately 3 months for my first sick fish to show obvious symptoms. Going to try this garlic elixer remedy off goldfish 911 and soak there food in it. I have also asked on a different thread for advice on ways I can improve my general tank maintenance. I am getting larger filters for both tanks, changing there diet slightly. Once the QT is over assuming everything is ok ill put one fish from the 3ft into the 4 ft and stocking will be adequate. The thread is called Tank maintenance and tank health. Reason for this post is im open to any and all opinions, advise, moral support anyone can offer. I want to give my fish the best chance at fighting this thing. Wish me luck
  8. So - here is what I have done so far. I woke up this morning and Speckle was pineconing slightly. She had been a little listless lately, but was eating/pooping fine and wasn't floaty or anything. The males have been chasing her around all over the place so I just figured she was tired. Anyway, I rushed to get her set up in the QT (10 gallon) before I had to leave for class and work, and started maracyn 2. I don't have a heater in there yet and have not done anything else since getting home 10 minutes ago. She is still tired looking, still alive (thank goodness!!!) and the pineconing has not gotten worse. What else should I do??? Thank you for any help...I feel so awful that my poor water piggy is sick
  9. I've been caring for this little guy for several weeks now, trying to cure him for my sister in law who is busy with a new baby. he had a couple of patches of grey/white on the body & a small amount of tail damage with white edge. the last week it seems to have gotten out of hand & spread & now he has stopped eating. I've mostly had him in up to .3% salt in a 12 litre QT which seemed to do not much at all. I've lost track of water changes & sometimes I didn't have any salt in the water at all to see how he went & if things got better. out of desperation I tried maracyn 2 & maroxy about 2 weeks ago & about 3 days ago I tried multi cure. his appetite has been good up until yesterday. I've just done another large wc & tried to clear everything out of the water at this stage (except the prime of course). i'm afraid i'm losing him & would appreciate any advice. as I said he is in an uncycled QT & I have been doing at least 50 % wc every few days. I don't know if the water params are helpful in this situation but can give them if needed.
  10. Hi everyone. This is an update from my last post about Pickle, who was gasping for air at the surface of the tank (which is still cycling). Alex advised that I add salt, making a 0.1% solution. I have been doing this for about a week now, and it seemed to help a lot at first. Now, however, it seems like the salt isn't helping as much and Pickle is still gasping. Buttons and Speckle are a little jumpy at times, yawn a lot, and sometimes clamp their fins - though not extremely tightly. I really want this cycle to just establish itself already Does anyone have any advice on how I can make it easier for them? I get the feeling it has to be cycled soon...please help! Here's my params: Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level (tank): 0.25ppm * Nitrite Level (tank): 2.0ppm * Nitrate level (Tank): Between 0ppm and 5ppm * Ph Level, (Tank): 7.4 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Speckle: maracyn 2, for septicemia, 1wk treatment; salt is the only other thing I've used, x1wk
  11. Hi guys, This is my first time posting in D&D so hopefully you can help. My little Pickle has been gasping at the surface of the tank pretty much constantly (though she will swim around sometimes, and sleeps under water) for the past week or so. She's the only fish out of 3 in the tank doing this, and my tank is still cycling. I'm currently going through a nitrite spike, and doing 80% water changes every day, testing morning and night. I'm wondering if she's just gasping because of the water quality, or if there's another issue (parasites?). Other than the gasping, she's been eating fine and doesn't seem lethargic/there are no ed streaks in her fins or anything and no clamping. Here's my params: Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level (tank): 0.25ppm pre-WC/0.25ppm immediately post-WC * Nitrite Level (tank) >5.0ppm pre-WC/0.25ppm immediately post-WC * Nitrate level (Tank) 5.0ppm pre-WC/5.0ppm immediately post-WC * Ph Level, (Tank) (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.4 pre-WC/8.2 immediately post-WC Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API drop kit * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Hagen Aquaclear 70 * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime * Water temperature? 72F * How often do you change the water and how much? Daily; 70-80% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? Today, 80% * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 30gal, 2 months * How many fish in the tank and their size? Three; less than 3 inches each * What do you feed your fish and how often? Saki-Hikari pellets (daily), repashy soilent green (2x a week), green peas (daily/every other day), hikari frozen bloodworms (2x a week), hikari freeze dried brine shrimp (2x a week); usually feed very small meals 3-4x daily * Any new fish added to the tank? no * Any medications added to the tank? no * List previous issues experienced (dropsy, SBD, etc.) SBD * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? no * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? gasping, seems to be staying near the surface/floating but not flipping over * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Nothing, yet! * You can really help us to identify with the concern more accurately if you post some pictures and a short video. In addition I've been having this problem with my Hagen where the foam sponge pushes up and that, in turn, pushes up the bio media and carbon...I cleaned it out in a bucket of tank water, but a day later it started pushing up again. Anyone know how I can solve this? Thanks in advance!
  12. I have three goldfish. Two of them started getting breeding pimples and one of them (bolt) kept chasing sparky (who is smaller and not showing mating signs) so I put sparky in his/her own 17l tank. Last water. Change was 2 days ago. He started floating at the top of the tank, the right way around but pointing down and slightly to the side. We believe he was constipated so we gave him/her peas. A day later we noticed he had a white growth on his side. He/she had this before in the exact same location and it went away but has come back again, what is it? It is not red, it just looks like a big pimple. I added a small amount of aquarium salt and some anti fungus medicine. What is the growth? Find a picture below, blurry I know.
  13. Hello everyone! So I just tried out a new LFS and brought home two new red cap orandas. But when I took a close look at them on the way home, I noticed a white spot on both their fins. But after bringing them home and seeing them under the light, they have quite a few white spots. Is this ich? Of it is, how can I treat it with aquarium salt? Will the salt affect my other fish that don't have ich? And I don't have any test kits, but am planning to get some soon! Thank you! Hi, I just got a free goldfish today from an online ad, the owner said they needed to get rid of the goldfish asap because they were leaving for vacation. He came with a big bowl, air-stone, food and some fake plants. His bowl had a lot of poop in it so I changed his water after I got him home. While I was changing his water, my brother bumped into the coffee table that he was on and the cup I put him in tipped over, he flopped around and fell on the floor!! The drop was about, 40-50cm? After I got him back into his bowl, he sank to the bottom and tipped over on to his side. Now his breathing really heavily and I think one of this eye might be swollen. His tail doesn't look right either, its not whole and his got some holes. His bottom fin looks like its kind of bleeding?? Its all red at the tip. I'm not sure if its suppose to look like that, he is all white expect the top of his back which is orange. His really small, probably a baby fish, about the size of my thumb. The air-stone was really bothering him so I turned it off, should I keep it on? He looks really ill. I'm not sure what to do here? What can I do to make him better? I been searching up fish laying on their sides on google but it doesn't say what you should do.
  15. Hi, I just want to apologize in advance, I'm still very new to forums in general, and I'm trying hard to figure all of this out... So to start, I've been having some issues with my little moor lately.. I've had him for 3 years and his only tank mate for two. The tank mate is another fancy, a fantail goldie. My black moor named Dexter (that I assume that is male, but I don't know for sure...), has recently had white stringy waste (sorry for being so graphic). Its sticks on him for awhile, and gets quite long... He still has a bit of an appetite, but he just kind of lazes around for the most part now. He used to be very responsive when you'd come up to the tank, wiggling and such, but now he just floats around... He also had a bit of weird clear spots that appeared on some of his fins. I put a bit of salt in for a salt bath and they cleared up a bit... I also have a few plants: one hornwort, three anarachis (my goldies always snack on them , and three anubias I had some trouble with my tap water for awhile (we are on a well), but it eventually cleared up. They nitrates were higher than normal; about 20ppm or so. We started using bottled spring water (no Reverse Osmosis), but after awhile we picked up a water purifier. Since then the nitrates have been about 5ppm. I tested my water yesterday, after a partial change the day before, and this is what I got: Ammonia Level (tank): less than 5ppm * Nitrite Level (tank): 0ppm * Nitrate level (Tank) 10ppm * Ammonia Level (Tap): I haven't tested in awhile, but it was under 5ppm * Nitrite Level (Tap): 0ppm * Nitrate level (Tap): 5ppm * Ph Level, (Tank) (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines): * Ph Level, (Tap) (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines): I use the API master freshwater test kit... I found its more accurate than the strips... I was using just an Aqueon 55/75 standard filter, and an aqua tech 5-15 gallon filter. I took out the aqua tech yesterday because it wasn't running up to par, and put in two Marineland Bio-wheel 200 models (200 GPH each). I also kept the aqueon in until the new filters establish with new bacteria... As for the additives and conditioners, I use: API Melafix when needed their is scale damage Tetra AquaSafe Water Conditioner Kordon AmQuel Plus for ammonia API Stress Coat The water temp is about 75 degrees Fahrenheit, (I can't figure out how to cool it ) I usually change the water about 1-2 times a week, never two days in a row, and usually about 5 gallons by way of a gravel vacuum... I changed my water two days ago, and my usual 5 gallons. However, I was out of town for two weeks, and I wasn't able to do my normal water changes.... Tank size is 55 gallons and its been up and running for about 8 months now I have two fish, and two snails... Dexter is about 5 inches, and my Goldie is about the same. My two snails are about an inch a piece. I feed them flakes, once a day with treats of veggies every so often. I try for once or twice a week. No new fish have been added. The only medications, or anything like it I've put in lately have been Melafix and salt... The only issues that I've noted were some issues caused by the higher nitrates when our water was bad, and a some problems due to ammonia poisoning when my tank was first establishing. My original tank sprung a leak and I had to move them quickly... when I had issues with the nitrates, he just sat in the corner most of the day... He seemed better once I got the levels down. He's been eating a bit, but not as much as usual. He doesn't sit at the bottom anymore, but he just.. kinda floats :-/. He swims around a bit, but not as much as he used to. Goldie is missing some scales right below her dorsal fin. I know she likes to take off and... I'm not sure how to describe it, but she turns mid swim and sometimes bumps into things. She's always done that though and Dexter never has... But as I mentioned earlier, Dexter has had the long clear/white stringy waste and some clear spots appeared on his pelvic fin, anal fin, and pectoral fin.. I added some salt, and it started clearing up. I have never added any chemicals like antibacterials or algecide... only the melafix and the other chemicals I listed... I have had a bit of an alge problem in this new tank though... Its brown and it sticks to the plants and walls... I clean it off often, but it always comes back. I have two standard hoodlights that came with the tank set-up. I'm sorry for the long post... Thank you to anyone who can help me!

  17. I have a large tank with a variety of fish: Orandas, Fancy Goldfish, 2 plecos, a handful of black skirt tetras, 2 koi, and 3 comets. Almost over night, one by one, ONLY my comets/kois were getting sick all wth the same symptoms: - Sudden Lethargy - Not eating - Swimming directly down into stream of air bubbles For instance, they would be fine in the AM but come late afternoon they would be showing symptoms (one fish at a time over a span of a 6 weeks) and then by the morning they would be dead. Always found floating at the top of the tank, all curled up... then a week later it would happen to another one... and then another one... and now I currently have one of my largest prized comets showing syptoms... I fear when I get home he will be dead. ** Strange things are: sudden onset, the fact that it's only affecting the comet/kois, and that there are NO physical signs of disease: no fungal growth, no wounds, no spots, no eye issues, no noticable gill irritation... nothing. Please, is this a parasite? A bacteria? Should I just treat the tank with a generic parasite medication? Please any advice will be much appreciated. Thank you in advance. As far as water quality... I haven't checked it recently but I change 2 large buckets every few weeks (more often lately) and my nitrates are ususally always a challange to keep down put I've had these fish for about a year and they have never had water quality issues before and there have been no drastic changes.
  18. Hi, I noticed these spots on my goldfish's tail today. Any idea as what these could be? Behavior is normal and water quality is good. It's a 30g tank with 2 goldfish in it. 25% water change is done once a week and water gets topped up throught the week. The tank is filtered by 2 AQ Clear 200 filters. I'll post more info when i get a chance tomorrow, wanted to get these pics up in case someone can offer some advice. thanks.
