  1. So I have owned goldfish for over a year now and wanted to upgrade tanks. I got a much larger one, 60 gallons, and want to go to a lowish tech planted tank. I just had a few questions. One is when I cycle, do I do it with plants in or do the plants go in afterwards. Also, will plants do ok on fluorescent bulbs? I was hoping to use the ones that came with the tank. Lastly, does liquid CO2 work ok? At the moment I don't want to invest in a system and the plants I am looking at are not very high maintenance.
  2. Hi all, I used to be a frequenter on this site but I have not owned goldfish in years. Suddenly today I rescued three goldfish living in terrible living conditions ( In bags with a previously lived in 10 gallon tank, no filter, never been cleaned, etc) So far I have done a 100% water change and cleaned the sides of the tank but left the the rocks in the bottom of the tank which will hopefully help maintain the tank's nitrogen cycle and put an aerator and a filter for a 30 gallon tank in. Is that ok? and then probably like 90% water changes every two days? I have a 20 gallon but I am trying to get at least a 40 gallon to transfer them into as soon as i can set up the nitrogen cycle. I have found myself frantically trying to remember everything about goldfish and I would really appreciate some advice on what to do next. The fish themselves look really healthy, their fins are in excellent condition and they are very energetic. They even appear to be closely bonded. I used tetra aquasafe plus to treat the water because it is what they had at the petstore and the food they came with. I figure it is best not to switch right away, even if it is something higher quality. Any brand recs would be greatly appreciated. Can you still buy pro gold?
  3. Hi All!! I finally got some new fishies!! I couldn't find the fish I wanted at the LFS in my area so ended up ordering online. I went for non-show/breed quality fish so that meant I didn't get to pick the ones I wanted, I just got to decide on the breed and colour. I also mentioned in another post that I had ordered a regular red and white pearlscale but instead got a calico crowned pearlscale. I was dissapointed at first I'll admit, but she's a tiny ball of attitude and I'm keeping her! Since my husband is probably tired of me going on about them I thought I'd share . To be honest I wasn't enthusiastic about ordering fish online, particularly ones I hadn't seen yet, but after watching some unboxing video's it allayed some of my fears. I ordered from Star FIsheries. I must say they arrived healthy but I was very unimpressed with the way they were boxed up. They were all in one big bag that was blown up with air and that's it - no packaging whatsoever and not much water. They were all rolling around in that one bag, with the bag rolling around in an overly big box with no packaging or cushioning all the way here. Ontop of that the courier was late, arriving late afternoon rather than in the morning. I know that they are not 'prize' goldfish but these are living creatures not a bloody bag of potatoes . Needless to say they have been extremely skittish, it's taken them a week to settle and stop fighting each other, even after doing the whole dark room with a towel over the QT tub. At one point I had to seperate them for two days and then reintroduce them when they were less stressed. Thankfully now they seem okay with each other and are coming up to beg for their food . On the plus side they seem healthy and are very active cute little fishies! They are all between 2-3 inches, a little older than I prefer but since they will be going in the big tank with my other goldfish I didn't want them to be too small either. I managed to get some pictures tonight while I was checking them over. I'm terrible at taking photographs and they just wouldn't stay still - so please excuse the quality. I added the extra one of Munch so you can see how fat he is
  4. I had a three goldfish in my 20 gallon tank and they all started dying, one by one about a week after I got them. I now have a panda telescope eye goldfish and an ivory mystery snail in there. Emperor Kim Cho III is super inactive and isn't eating all of his food. What can I do to make him more active and eat more? He leaves most of his food on the bottom of the tank. 5. Finally I got my first aquarium light, I'm happy, my fish are happy Well Mr.Ryukin moves a lot I couldn't take a photo of him. This time with captions "One photo only and make it quick" "No more" "That tail.." "Mirror mirror on the wall" "Part time job - model" "I will destroy this plant muahhahaha" "Calling all the plant destroyers" "What are you looking at ?" "FABULOUS" "Our home"
  6. Finally bought a new 53 gallons tank for my goldies, love all the happy faces. Sadly my black moor couldn't make it, she passed away 2 days ago due to SB . But I'm glad that the others are fine. Bad camera *sigh. _The Video: _The Photos:
  7. Been a long time since I've posted, my Ryukin, Yamato has been doing really well, he's about a year and a half old now. Sadly he's been plagued by floating issues so I have had to keep him on a strict blanched peas diet. Anyways, I figured it would cheer him up to have a buddy in the tank with him, so I purchased and quarantined a beautiful Black Moor who I just introduced to the tank yesterday. The Black Moor, Othello, made himself right at home but almost immediately began chasing Yamato all over the tank. Yamato swam away with great speed at first but over the past day has gotten more and more apathetic about the whole thing and Othello now spends his time headbutting Yamato. I was really confused at first why the new fish would show this kind of aggression towards the established fish, especially since Yamato is larger, but then in dawned on me: THIS WAS MATING BEHAVIOR Yamato might be a female...whoops So I guess I'll just let nature take it's course and hope that maybe if Yamato lays some eggs it may help with HER floating issues a bit. My one concern that I wanted to bring up for discussion (and something I haven't found a straight answer to so far), how do male and female goldfish get along when they're not breeding? Can they coexist happily in a tank? Does this chasing behavior happen year-round? I don't want Yamato to be harrassed everyday all day for the rest of her breeding life so I'm hoping this only happens at certain times of the year. Also, is there anything that can be done to discourage breeding season, like raising water temp, etc? Thanks in advance for your insight!
  8. Hi Everyone, My name is Sarah. I just joined. I have been in the hobby on and off for 10 years. I have 15 goldfish. I guess I am a little nuts for them:) They are like my kids (of which I have four). So, between my people kids and my fishy kids, I am a busy lady! Here's my fish list: 2 Black Moors 3 Veil Tails 1 Pom Pom 1 Lemonhead Oranda 1 Blue Oranda 1 Red Cap Oranda 1 Calico Telescope Eye 1 Chocolate Fantail 2 Red and White Ranchus 1 Ryukin 1 rescue goldie, not sure what he is. He has no eyes (popped out), no tailfin (rotted away), and covered in burns. We shall see…just finished a week of Pimafix/Melafix (fingers crossed). So glad to be here!!!!
  9. All right! Clemmy (Clementine) is out of QT and into the main tank. I'll be getting the 75 gallon soon and a canister filter, and then they'll be all set. For now, they're a little squished in the 30 gallon, but I'm keeping good track of the water parameters and they're all still pretty small. My plant is THRIVING on the nitrates! As you can see....they have decimated the anachris.... Enjoy! Speckle the photobomber! Pickle and Clemmy are racing... Clemmy is getting along just fine with the crowd! Rather good one of Buttons! They love hanging out in groups I liked this one! This one I think really shows the cloudiness in Mr. B's eyes...he's definitely sight-impaired, if not completely blind. She just LOVES the camera! Clemmy was adorable right when I first added him to the tank (yup...he's a boy, I'm pretty sure) kept swimming right next to all the others and copying EVERYTHING they did! It was like he was trying to find his "mommy" Cute!!!
  10. Well, I did the thing. The thing I have seen SO MANY here at Koko's do, and I have SWORN I would never do.....I got myself another fish. It was totally unplanned! I had wanted a tele if I got another, but love my 3 babies to death and can't wait till they get their bigger tank. But I went to petsmart today for supplies, and this poor little guy had a rock the size of his eyeball stuck in his mouth, and he was so obviously in pain and distress I made the store clerk take the rock out, and figured....hey, I have a spare 10 gallon....and I'll be getting my 75gal in 2 months! My mom just rolled her eyes at me when I got home. Without further ado, here's the little fella! I haven't decided on a name yet. His mouth is pretty screwed up by the looks of it, from the "rock incident." I was also wondering....he'll be in the 10gallon for 2 months unless I put him with my other guys. They're in a 30 gallon, so it's already overstocked, but the new guy is little and I'm getting plants for the big tank tomorrow. Feelings? It will only be really overstocked for a short time before they get to fish paradise land! I'll hopefully be moving into my permanent home August 1st.
  11. Ok. So I want to be very careful when I go and get my fish. I don't want to bring any disease into the new tank. What should I look for when getting new fish? Are local pet stores better than the big chains?
  12. Excuse my ignorance, but what's the process for introducing fish to an aquarium after the tank is done cycling? like from the petstore to the tank.
  13. Started my cycle today. Ammonia reading is at 4ppm (around what the article on fishless cycle said) Will test again tomorrow to see what changes
  14. I have 110 gallon tank. Will set it up today to do a fishless cycle. Anyone have any recommendations: heater? pump (air stones)? lights? barebottom or something else?
  15. http://allentown.cra...3210564932.html the price has dropped to 325 I'm a newbie of sorts, so if you think this may or may not be a good deal, please let me know.
  16. http://longisland.cr...3232885686.html I want to upgrade to a 55-75+ tank
  17. i'm planning on upgrading my goldfish to either a 3 or 4 ft tank very soon. it will have new filter & gravel. i will use some of the plastic plants from the old tank & some of the old filter media will go into the new filter. are there any rules to how long the new tank will take to cycle when adding established filter media etc. or is each tank different? will adding water from the old tank be beneficial in helping the new tank to cycle? i wanted to add my goldies to the new tank straight away if possible (matching ph & temp of course). do i need to test the water params daily & what would be the main indication of the need for a water change (ammonia??)? when all the levels are steady/good for a few days would this indicate my new tank has successfully cycled? sorry for so many questions, im sure its all been asked before
  18. I'll be receiving her Thursday, and I am just so excited. She's been on my watch list for an entire month on ebay, and I've denied buying her because I was keeping my eye out for a yellow/white pearlscale from all my known go-to-goldfish places. I just had to have her when I say that the vendor dropped her price $10.00. I can't promise I'll spam you guys with pictures when I get her, I really want to let her destress the first 24 hours she's home. I've been reading that pearlies are notoriously sensitive and I'm a little apprehensive. I'll definitely have pictures within her first week though! I don't think I'll be able to fight off sharing this cuteness for long.
  19. Hey you guys! I've been a goldfish owner for just about 6 months now ( so forgive me if I don't know tons :/ ) and I initially had about an inch of medium sized gravel but I had trouble keeping the ammonia levels down. Also I got super nervous when my oranda would sift through the gravel; don't want the little guy to choke. Now I have about 10 larger rocks along the bottom but I was wondering how to make a bare bottom tank look less simple. Also I just put in a Top Fin bubble wall in my tank to add to the "look" and to help with oxygenation I guess.
  20. As some of you know, my tank just recently finished it's cycle after a very long three months! I had a hard time deciding whether i wanted to do 2 goldies in my 30 gallon, or let have 1 special one have all the space for himself. After hearing from you guys that it's really much better for them to be together, i have gone with these two little lovies! I believe I will call this pretty little fella(?) Pinto: http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o542/jk10611/DSC03101.jpg The darker one in the back has been dubbed Percy. He still has a lot of fry coloring, but in the light he looks like he has some nice lemony yellow underneath! He is a little more camera shy and hard to get a picture of. http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o542/jk10611/DSC03104.jpg Showing off their cute 'lil faces! http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o542/jk10611/DSC03107.jpg So far today they're just taking it easy. Tomorrow i will start the salt and prazi process although so far there hasn't been any fin clamping or yawning and they have been nice and active. Pinto seems to have either a funny shaped tail or was getting nipped at by the other fish in the tank... I am going to see if salt and water changes will help with this. Feel free to comment and let me know what you think it may be. I also found a store about an hour away from me that has Nerite snails so after these guys are done with quarantine I would like to go up there and pick up a few! Thanks for looking, i am very excited to finally have some precious gold ones!
  21. I am so excited! I had the best deals for fish this week it seems like. I bought an Aquaclear 50 and used filter media from my cycled tank and got a ten gal quarantine. My LFS has an employee who is very goldfish savvy and he knew that since I stared my hobby I have been looking for a black ranchu, well he ordered one for me! I think it is a girl and I LOVE her!! I named her Pearl after The Black Pearl, and the whale on Spongebob. She is huge! The biggest fish I have ever owned. That was all on Tuesday. Today...I got a 29 gal with lid and light, with stand, 2 air pumps, a penguin 300 filter and filter replacements, all for $50!!!!! So my new girl is going to finish up her quarantine period in the 29 gal because she is cramped in the 10 gal. If all goes smoothly at the end of the month, Nugget my red lionchu will move in with her. I am so excited!!! I will post pics in the afternoon.
  22. Hi everybody. Since i have lost my Calico Fantail "Pusling" and my Redcap "Buller", i really needed cheering up. What better way to remind myself that life life goes on, than getting new buddies? So i have bought 2 new babies on 21st of January 2012. One is a tiny Calico Fantail and the other a little Orange Fantail. I dont know the gender of either fishie yet. They also dont have any names yet, so feel free to suggest names. The new fish are so very tiny compared to my big Orange Fantail Tvilsen, but so far all is good After buying them, they spent first week getting treated with Prazipro in QT tank. And i will continue Prazi treatment in main tank, including the "old" fish too. Here the cuties are...Enjoy
