  1. I am in the process of nuking my tank due to what might be columnaris or particularly vicious parasites, and I was wondering what people did to sterilize their ceramic media? I have AquaClear ceramic whatever that they provide, and Fluval Biomax rings. I am planning to throw away the sponges and floss to start afresh. Would I bleach the material, or would the bleach soak in? Bake it? If so, how long and at what temperature? Thanks!
  2. Hi, as you know I got a 20 gal. long tank with a ranchu(one and only princess in the tank) I have a sponge filter I believe is proVII well the biggest one in the market. then I got aquaclear 70 set up and running, fully cycled but now I just got more media I want to have running, how can I make this possible? I got no canister and I don't know if I want to have one just yet, well yes I want but the sizes of those things scares me, so I was thinking what if I take my breeder box(you know those boxes that flotes in the tank to keep pregnant fishes so the fry does not get eaten or lost in the tank) and fill it up with all the new media and sponges I got and put it right underneath the water dropping from the aqua clear 70 filter? does it sound like a good idea? and what is more important to have sponge filter or media filter? I know both of them are essential for the tank, but what makes a different the most? I heard that the more media the more bb and so I heard for the sponge. so how to do this? thank you for the help.!
  3. So I have been running my fluval 406 canister filter for about two weeks now, I was just wondering when you should change the large sponge pad part and the carbon. It says every month but I am assuming that's more for other freshwater fish not goldfish. I've also read you don't really have to change the ceramic rings ever unless they are damaged, which makes sense. But anyone have any times on when to change the other media?
  4. How often should I change my filter media? I have an AquaClear 50 and use the Sponge, Biomax and carbon. How often should I change each of them? Also, should I use carbon, I have read on different sites that some don't use carbon but use two of the biomax, any suggestions?
  5. So in my bare bottom 75 gallon tank, i have 2 orandas, 2 ryukins, and one fantail. I have 2 Emperor 400 Bio-Wheel HOB filters. However! I really want to add a huge enhancement to my bio component of filtration. So I was thinking of having a 20 gallon long sump about 3/8 full of ceramic rings and gravel. I have a few questions. 1) Lol I know this is cheap but for the pump that leads water down into the sump, can I use a plain old siphon? If this works out, then I can save money and buy one return pump? 2) If I were to do what I mentioned in my previous question, would I need a ball valve on the return pump to match the siphon's GPH? 3) Do you recommend baffles? If so, do you recommend acrylic or glass? Oh, and if you think I should have an overflow unit, I would really prefer a DIY design of a HOB overflow. Thanks everyone! I won this tank in a raffle. I thought 20 gallons was big! Haha. And plz be easy on me I'm an amateur.
  6. I want to add as much biological filtration to my Rena XP3. I was wondering if one type of media is more effective (can hold more bacteria and/or last longer) than another. There's just too many to pick from (brands). My filter came with little ceramic (not actual ceramic, I just don't know what it's actually made from) looking tube pieces. Which ones do you use?
