  1. Hi all, I hope im in the correct place. Its my 1st post. I have a large tank 450l. I recently went pond hunting and found out that most medium sized ponds are about 450l. My question is why do ponds need less filtration than indoor tanks, and why do fish grow faster in a pond?
  2. A few months back my goldfish had injured himself on a decoration quite badly resulting in a small open wound and a tear to his tail. I treated the open wound and it healed in less then a week. His tail however has not healed at all. I'm starting to think it never will. It's just a small tear and doesn't affect his swimming I'm just confused as to why it hasn't healed and looking for an explanation.
  3. Hello everyone. This is my first post here, I also made a similar post at [dnalex removed] incase anyone also uses that site. So anyway, a few months ago my family had a 20 gallon indoor pond installed and we got a pair of fantail goldfish. It was only after we had the pond installed and got the goldfish that we found out 2 fantails would need a 30 - 40 gallon tank. The tank is 95 cm wide and 85 cm front to back (at its widest points, its sort of a round-edged rectangle) with a waterfall and 2 filters. Could anyone give me tips on how to keep the goldfish healthy in these conditions which are not exactly ideal like how often I should do water changes, much % etc. Upgrading them is just not an option right now, neither is giving them up. Thanks!
  4. I heard sand better then gravel these are the goldfishes I have. How do I switch it with out harming them. And right now I have grave in there. Please help me how to switch and pick a color for them.
  5. Just need some clarification. I have suspicions on Olive being female from what I think is an "outie vent." I'd just like to hear from the experts. Here's a picture of "her" : Thanks for your time!
  6. i have a 5 gallon tank with 2 goldfish one died this morning there no ammonia or nitrite i tested today i have ryukin in it alone i am getting a 20 gallon tank in 2 months maybe a 20 or 30 if i have more money the ryukin has it's dorsal fin down but it got active when i come or feed it i did a water change today what should i do i don't want the fish to die
  7. I went into the local pet store to buy some of my favorite goldfish pellet food (which they didn't have ) and I came out with this little guy! He's a baby Blue Oranda, and I just couldn't resist! I have never seen one that looked this good in a pet store before. His coloring, the fact that I can actually see blue in him, instead of just a bronzy brown color, is what really caught my eye. I really hope he doesn't depigment later on. But, as pet store goldfish don't have the purest of genes, I have a feeling he might, but that's fine too. My Red Cap Oranda, that I bought from the same store, is now all white, and I still love him . His color seems pretty solid for right now, but, any thoughts? Anyone ever have a Blue Oranda that depigmented to another color? He does have a little bit of wen growth, which is pretty hard to see, and even harder to see in this picture, but it is there! Here he is again, facing the other way so you can see his other side, although it is pretty blurry. He's in the quarantine tank for the moment, and he gets to stare longingly at the main tank all day. You can see my beautiful Black Oranda, Big Momma, showing off in the background there. As well as the once Red Cap now White Oranda mentioned above, and my Sakura Ranchu. Can even see a little Nerite snail on the side there! I was so excited, just thought I'd share! Can't wait to get him in the big tank.
  8. Hi everyone I am going to take pics of my fishes can you tell me if my fishes are boys or girls. I think dory,Sadie, and Sally is a females and waffles is a male. I might be wrong. Could you help me please. Sadie the white goldfish,Sally is the white with orange dote on her head,Waffles white with red on his head, and dory the orange goldfish. I took two shots of Sally to see if you can see her better.
  9. Recently, I've noticed that my black moor likes to sit on the bottom of the tank whenever people are not around (I noticed by peering in through the window when coming home one day) but the moment he sees a person, he goes back to his normal, active self. I know that I worry way too much about everything concerning my goldfish , so I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed their goldies being lethargic when not being watched, and hyper and "acting normal" when people are around?
  10. It's been a little bit, and I think they've definitely grown! Here are a few shots I took today of Speckle, Pickle, and Buttons (who I've started calling Mr. B!).....finally got some good ones! The three musketeers! Pickle says....HUH???? Got some really nice ones of Buttons and his cute lil face Mr. B look at you!!! Speckle says hello! Mr. B swimming along.... Not enough photos of me......HMPH!!!!
  11. I read somewhere that temperature can be important for plants. This got me wondering, what temperature do you guys keep your tanks to keep both plants and fancy goldfish happy?
  12. my new goldfish are super shy they don't like light/room light or aquarium light when i turn the room light on the red cap get's shocked it lays on the aquarium floor and if it see's any one it does the same thing to why

  16. Hello everybody, I've just been doing some research and it turns out that my little 'white' comet is leucistic. Apologies for the terrible photo. "Leucism is a general term for the phenotype resulting from defects in pigment cell differentiation and/or migration from the neural crest to skin, hair, or feathers during development. This results in either the entire surface (if all pigment cells fail to develop) or patches of body surface (if only a subset are defective) having a lack of cells capable of making pigment." - Wiki Another example of a leucistic goldfish: (Source) You can see that they have black eyes, which if they were albino, would be red. And they can be partially leucistic like my comet, who has an orange spot near her tail . Do you have a leucistic goldfish? Why not show a photo? (If I'm actually completely wrong about leucism, please let me know ).
  17. Hello all, I posted this topic a few days ago and things seemed like they where getting better for my poor magneto... But now he is acting very lethargic and kind of just floats around or will fide under a plant so he wont float away. Since I posted the other topic I was doing small water changes every day and he seemed to be healing. now this... Water params are the same as before, ill fill out another form though. 18. My magneto is having real issues and im scared to death. I found him stuck to the filter and there where bubbles all over his body, so im thinking his slime coat is damaged. I have turned the filters off for now. Last night I forgot to add prime to my water and didn't realize untill maybe a couple of hours later. Today I found him really lethargic and floaty. I have noticed some brown spots on him as well, though I was assuming those where ammonia burns healing. I do 50% w/c every week and unfortunately I am over stocked. I have 1 fish in a 10-12 gal tank and that has worked for me for about a year. I am unable to get a bigger tank at the moment. Please help me I'm terrified for him Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank)- less than .25 * Nitrite Level(Tank)- 0 * Nitrate level(Tank)- 0ish * Ammonia Level(Tap)- less than .25 * Nitrite Level(Tap)- 0 * Nitrate level(Tap)- not sure, but last time a checked 0 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? 19. Hi all. After my fish of 7 years Nymeria died last year, I've tried tropical fish keeping as something different. It was fun at the start, but I never had that same connection I had with goldfish. So now I have gone back to goldfish! Here are my two new ones I got today. A little cute orange oranda and a red cap I'm in love again!
  20. All right! Clemmy (Clementine) is out of QT and into the main tank. I'll be getting the 75 gallon soon and a canister filter, and then they'll be all set. For now, they're a little squished in the 30 gallon, but I'm keeping good track of the water parameters and they're all still pretty small. My plant is THRIVING on the nitrates! As you can see....they have decimated the anachris.... Enjoy! Speckle the photobomber! Pickle and Clemmy are racing... Clemmy is getting along just fine with the crowd! Rather good one of Buttons! They love hanging out in groups I liked this one! This one I think really shows the cloudiness in Mr. B's eyes...he's definitely sight-impaired, if not completely blind. She just LOVES the camera! Clemmy was adorable right when I first added him to the tank (yup...he's a boy, I'm pretty sure) kept swimming right next to all the others and copying EVERYTHING they did! It was like he was trying to find his "mommy" Cute!!!
  21. Hello all! I am more than sure there is already something about his topic started, but I just couldn't find anything. I have a 70 gallon rubbermaid stock tank that I keep outside. I have had the fancies outside now for many months, but just upgraded to the rubbermaid stock tank this last month. I don't have much of a filtration system, I have a small submersible filter that I keep the return end above the surface for a "water fountain" effect to add aeration and water movement... and it works surprisingly well. I have 3 water lily plants that are finally starting to really take off and grow strong and healthy. I have many flag iris plant bulbs in the water, too. I would love to do a DIY filter. I don't think I will have any troubles finding a good pump, especially one that would be 10x the filtration since it is a smaller garder pond. I've kept an eye on eBay (as I buy and sell on there) and see plenty of good quality pumps go for much less than they should. I'm more interested in the actual filter set up itself. What would be the best media to put in a outdoor tank? Etc.. Just something to get my mind jogging as I am very good with this DIY stuff Any links to other forums like this one would be fabulous too!! Thanks everyone!! This photo here is a few weeks ago... After I get the tank cleaned up today, I will have to post another photo so you all can see just how much that water lily in the photo has grown.. (I love before and after photos!!)
  22. Here's my silly little girl making some bubbles. She's started doing this for no reason and seems to entertain herself by making them and then popping them. I'm starting to think she's part betta fish. If you're worried about floating, she never actually swallows the bubbles. I'm also seeing that she's developing a matte brown on her head.. Is that the next colour change..? http://s593.photobucket.com/user/Mianari/media/videos/bubbles.mp4.html She's currently being treated for flukes but that isn't stopping her from having fun.
  23. Well, I did the thing. The thing I have seen SO MANY here at Koko's do, and I have SWORN I would never do.....I got myself another fish. It was totally unplanned! I had wanted a tele if I got another, but love my 3 babies to death and can't wait till they get their bigger tank. But I went to petsmart today for supplies, and this poor little guy had a rock the size of his eyeball stuck in his mouth, and he was so obviously in pain and distress I made the store clerk take the rock out, and figured....hey, I have a spare 10 gallon....and I'll be getting my 75gal in 2 months! My mom just rolled her eyes at me when I got home. Without further ado, here's the little fella! I haven't decided on a name yet. His mouth is pretty screwed up by the looks of it, from the "rock incident." I was also wondering....he'll be in the 10gallon for 2 months unless I put him with my other guys. They're in a 30 gallon, so it's already overstocked, but the new guy is little and I'm getting plants for the big tank tomorrow. Feelings? It will only be really overstocked for a short time before they get to fish paradise land! I'll hopefully be moving into my permanent home August 1st.
  24. First, let me thank you guys for this forum. You've saved me from frustration and fish deaths several times now, but this time I've got an issue I haven't been able to find a solid answer to yet! Today, I discovered one of my fancy fantails swimming nose-up, with a bunch of white fuzzy globs on it. They almost look like lint balls! I immediately worried, but since it doesn't look like ich, I decided to sit tight and run some tests. I googled it and found a thread here with a lady with a similar problem, and Trinket told her it was likely a pH problem. I tested pH and found it was barely registering with my test kit (straight yellow/6.0) so I followed directions from that thread and added baking soda. That brought me up to 6.4, and from my reading it seems moving the pH more than .4 in a day is harmful, so I stopped there. My ammonia came out just light of 0.25, Nitrite at 0, Nitrate at 10ppm. These levels are fairly consistent for my tank. I usually treat the ammonia with AmQuel Plus about every 3 weeks as needed. I need to get a KH/GH test kit, but $ is tight so it's on the list for next paycheck! Have any of you experienced this before? I think the pH issue is the problem, but it just seems like this tank always has some issue. I had goldfish as a kid and can't remember ever working this hard to keep them healthy! I've given more info below, as well as a video of my fish and my tank. Please don't mind the children in the background The best shot of the affected fish is at roughly 2:25-3:10 in the video. Any help at all would be most appreciated! As requested: Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level (tank): 0-0.25ppm * Nitrite Level (tank): 0 * Nitrate level (Tank): 10ppm * Ammonia Level (Tap): 0-0.25ppm * Nitrite Level (Tap): 0 * Nitrate level (Tap): 5.0ppm * Ph Level, (Tank) (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines): was too low to read with my kit (6.0) before baking soda, 6.4 after * Ph Level, (Tap) (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines): 6.2 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API master kit, drops * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Marineland Penguin 100 (for 20gal) * What kind of water additives or conditioners? AmQuel Plus, Stress Zyme+, aquarium salt * Water temperature? 68. rose to 70 yesterday but went back down * How often do you change the water and how much? 10-20% bi-weekly * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 20% changed 4 days ago * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 20gal hi-tank, running since July * How many fish in the tank and their size? 3 fish total. 1 feeder goldfish, 3.5-4" long. 2 fancy fantails 2-3" long * What do you feed your fish and how often? once daily, TetraFin flakes * Any new fish added to the tank? not in last 60 days * Any medications added to the tank? other than those listed (conditioners), I added 1-1/2 tsp baking soda roughly 3 hours ago to help buffer the pH. pH changed from 6.0 to 6.4 * List previous issues experienced: Starting a new line here. This tank has been a headache from day one. It started off cloudy, yellow cloudy. Our LFS told us it was likely tannin from the river rocks we used and it would work itself out. After a few months it did, but in January our Kio jumped out of the tank (we didn't have a lid at the time) and one feeder died a day later. I cleaned the tank that weekend a bit too briskly and stirred up a lot of excrement into the water. My hubby and I had a fight and I forgot to change the water, which spiked the tank terribly. The second (still with us) feeder developed red streaks in the body and fins and upon testing I found the tank had ammonia, nitrates, and nitrite well over tolerable. I did a complete water change, conditioned the new water, and reset the tank. The tank has been clean and only had a minor spike or two of ammonia since. The feeder ("Lunk" is what I call him) has turned around fully and is currently quite healthy. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? One fancy seems to have what chunks of fuzz, almost like lint balls, on it's fins, the other only a tiny bit. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? The fancy showing the fuzz was swimming nealy straight up and down prior to me adding baking soda to the tank to buffer the pH, but is swimming better now (thanks to you guys!!!) * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. I add 2 tsp of the AmQuel and StressZyme+ roughly every 3 weeks, depending on ammonia levels and other test results. I last added salt in January, and had plans to do it this weekend before this all happened! * You can really help us to identify with the concern more accurately if you post some pictures and a short video. Video can be found at
