  1. Not posted much on my two lately, they have grown alot in the 10 or so months i've had them. Fishler the oranda in particular is massive now, he has overtaken thunder as the biggest and is a massive food hog. Im prety sure the're both girls as well, but any opinions would be good to hear. Tank is basically the same, Ive removed three of the containers at the back containing the vallis at the back to give them more swimming room, may also remove 1 of the bowls in time for the same reason. They do act totally different when im not there, or when they think im not there, they are constantly at the front when im there looking for a feeding. But when im not there they get up into the plants etc, there favourite trick at the moment is removing all the gravel from inside the bowls, I have to put a few handfuls back in each week into the bowls, so gives you an idea how much gravel they can shift. Im feeding Hikari Saki pellets, soaked for 10mins or so in the vid. They also get repashy soilent green, bloodworms, peas and greens, plus plants in the tank. And when I first got them for size comparison lol.
  2. My wild-type oranda, Sarge, is finally changing color after at least 10 months of being green! BEFORE: AFTER: He's got some yellow creeping up from his belly, which is almost white, and his green isn't so dense. When I bought him, he was in a tank full of fish who looked just like him, but were solid orange (siblings?). Any guesses on what color he'll turn next? Also, look at his little wen growing (finally)!
  3. Hi just wondering if this is an Oranda. I ordered him from my local fish store and he was suppose to be a 4.5" calico oranda. He doesnt really have a wen and his back fins are super short. Maybe he isnt fully developed? or maybe he isnt an oranda? any help would be great! Thanks
  4. Hi all. After my fish of 7 years Nymeria died last year, I've tried tropical fish keeping as something different. It was fun at the start, but I never had that same connection I had with goldfish. So now I have gone back to goldfish! Here are my two new ones I got today. A little cute orange oranda and a red cap I'm in love again!
  5. This is more of a "what color am I", but close enough My oranda, Sarge, is literally olive green and I was wondering if "green" is the official color name for him...? Some people have called him "bronze", but he's not that brownish. He's a deep green in every light and at all angles. I don't think it can be fry coloring either because he already has breeding stars. Any input is appreciated -- just curious what a hardcore collector/breeder/seller would call this!
  6. Hello I had occasion to get some new fish today. They came from an LFS that has been in operation for 20+ years, and is my favorite. I have to confess that I took a bit of a gamble and added them directly to my 100g, since the owner had been treating his goldfish (separate system from the rest) with Prazi, salt, and metro for the last 4 weeks. It was incredible actually, to see not a single sick looking goldfish in the entire place. Anyway, since the 100g is due for Prazi and salt treatment, I took the chance and added them to the tank. Anyway, without further ado, here they are. None has been named yet, and there will be a complete photoshoot of the entire tank coming soon. Ryukin 1: This one is so manly, he even has breeding turbercles above his eyes. My sister actually picked him out. Ruykin 2: I picked this one, who is another male. He doesn't have as prominent ryukin features as the other, but I love this one Telescope: I fell in love with this one right away. He reminds me of Courtney's Peanut, whom I absolutely adore! Oranda: I believe this color pattern is sometimes referred to as tiger (by goldfishnet anyway). I wasn't planning on getting another oranda, but he just blows me away with the chubby cheeks! Thank you for looking!
  7. Hello I just made a short video to show you what the fish do when the lights come on for their late evening meal. This is the 55 gallon, which previously had gravel. I am much happier now with sand as the substrate. I think it looks better, and is certainly safer. Do you think they are hungry? Edit: Apparently, YouTube now allows you to alter the speed of video playback, from 0.5x to 2x.
  8. Thought I would do an update since you guys haven't seen Otis or Monroe in a while. They are doing pretty well. Otis is still having floaty issues which breaks my heart and after numerous attempts to fix him, I've realized this is just how he will be for the rest of his life. Yesterday I added Eden back to the main tank because I didn't see any point in keeping her in the QT since she is healing so well and she was so happy to see her boyfriends again! My 40 breeder is going through some changes right now and it has seen much better days. I recently took out all 60 lbs of eco complete, since I never really got around to getting the planted tank look that i desired, i figured it's best to just go barebottom. I haven't quite got all of the tiny bits of gravel out yet, which is what you see on the bottom. I'm upgrading to a 55 gallon within the next few months for the 3 of them and I am super excited about that! Thanks for looking!
  9. An uneventful Saturday today as everyone is busy doing their own thing so I did a photoshoot for my goldies. I got this picture when the flash failed to go off. It looks terrifying, lol.
  10. So over the last couple of days I've been rearranging and attempting to clean my tank of algae/diatoms. So, since it's once again looking presentable, I thought I'd share a few pictures! Everything has been rearranged, a lot of pruning has taken place. Baby java fern that have grown off the adults have been dotted about the tank, plants have been cleaned to the best of my ability, nerites added, and I'm now awaiting lots of new plants that should be arriving in the next couple of days A shot of one of the nerites, and moustache couldn't help but get involved And it appears that someone may like the hair grass...tut tut
  11. Hi guys....hope you are all well today..... Did my routine water change yesterday, and everything in the tank seemed fine....I attached an image of the tank, as it was at 6.40 PM last night. The fish in question looked like this yesterday morning. You can just make out a slight bump on her head, but I didn't notice at the time.... This morning i woke and fed the little guys as normal, and noticed that the "growth" had become larger... This may be a better view/angle..... What do you think my friends? I would welcome any suggestions or diagnosis theories. Lyn and I are off out for Sunday lunch...but I'll respond and carry out any suggested treatments when we return later this afternoon Thanks in anticipation of your valued help/solutions to my problem......she is my favourite fish (I now we shouldn't have favourites but Hey-Ho!!)
  12. I got both Arnie and Naruto at the same time in February but Arnie was living with my boyfriend until about two months ago Here's a quick before and after. Arnie before: Arnie today: (some nice wen growth~) Naruto before: Naruto today:
  13. I went bare bottomed again earlier and promised some pics...so here you go... http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/jdjn133/media/Tank_zpsed3fe568.jpg.html?sort=3&o=6 http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/jdjn133/media/Fish2_zps1509b0e8.jpg.html?sort=3&o=5 http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/jdjn133/media/Fish1_zps31e19abe.jpg.html?sort=3&o=4 http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/jdjn133/media/fish4_zpsb39a8800.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1 (Sushi never stays still long enough for me to photograph him properly) http://s1272.photobucket.com/user/jdjn133/media/fish5_zpsb23b85db.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0
  14. Well, after taking time off with the move of bacteria from my 10 gallon, he goes my 55 gallon! The fish are doing great for days now and have good results on ammonia and nirates. Off to a smooth start! I'm planning on adding substate and etc in a few weeks or two. I got both of these guys from a bad quality LFS for $5 and they both had ick. Guess they're better now... Got this ryukin a few months ago from a local Wal-mart. Couldn't let him go. Both of these guys I got last week from a quality LFS. The ranchu is only an inch long and is already showing wen growth. And finnaly my new 55 gallon tank. (I'll be adding another filter soon) -KK
  15. Just a quick video of the current 55 crew which is always always changing. I swapped out orange peel for Hoshi and Roos is now fat and happy again and can rest in the plants like she loves to do. Soon Hoshi and Sharkie are going out with the others once I get home from school. Everyone is getting so big!
  16. Hi, Does anyone know if I can quarantine 2 new orandas together? I bought one from a lfs on 3/16 & he is in a 20 gallon by him/herself. He is about 6 months old. I bought another oranda from an online site & he/she was delivered on 3/22. He/she is in a 10 gallon. The 10 gallon was fully cycled. The 20 gallon took 10 days to cycle. I do not know how to copy & paste but both water parameters are good: ammonia 0, nitrate 5-10, nitrite 0, ph 7.8-8.0, gh 7, kh 5. Both fish were treated with salt gradually (0.3 for 7 days), through water changes there is not more salt. I was really lucky-both fish have started off healthy & have remained healthy : ) no ich, all scales are present & normal, appetite good, poop good, always swimming normally. I will be treating for flukes (6 round protocol) with prazi pro at a 0.1% salt. My question is: would it be safe/ok to have both fish in the 20 gallon & treat with prazi pro? It would admittedly be easier for me to take care of 1 tank but am completely willing to do what is best for them. I also think they may like having each other as company if it is okay. Once the QT is complete they will be moved into my 55 gallon. Thank you for any advice : )
  17. Hi all! I have a question while I read up on good feeding practices. My 5 inch ryukin goes crazy for leafy lettuce. I've noticed that lately his poop...well, it's significant! Haha. They're huge strands, bright green, a few inches long and almost the width of a straw! I wonder if it's normal just because I haven't seen it before. Usually poops are very skinny and brown. They've been getting leafy lettuce for the last 2 months or so. I'm also never sure how much lettuce to give them. I love it because it keeps them away from my plants, but I'm afraid to give too much. They go nuts for it! They also get different food once a day, either flakes or pellets or brine shrimp.
  18. Hi all! I'm Kj and I'm SO thrilled to have found a forum full of people who are as obsessed with goldfish as I am. I need your suggestions, but first, some background: I have a 55 gallon tank that has been up for about 4 months. I have a 4 year old 3-inch red and white oranda (I think; he may be a red cap...) named Merlin and a 5-inch (or so) calico ryukin named Mike Doyle. I'm not sure Mike Doyle's age because he was a pretty recent rescue from my local fish store. I have had Merlin since he was a tiny chain store fishy. I also keep a couple of apple snails who don't seem to mind the aquarium salt (Marcia and Greg). Perhaps this link to view some photos would help: http://s1297.photobu...library/Fishies I would really appreciate some opinions from you all! I am looking to add a third (and probably final due to tank space) fancy to my family. Do you have any recommendations? I'm really pretty open to any goldie who looks different than Mike and Merlin. Thanks in advance for any and all replies!
  19. Two Orandas (about 2-3 inch each including tail) I have, Hikari Lionhead Mini pellet Food. Saki-Hikari Fancy Goldfish Food. I know the "2 Minute Rule" but how many actual sinking pellets do I feed them?? How many times a day? How many times a week?
  20. Hi guys.....it seem's that the James family have a film star in their tank!! I hope he doesn't get too big for his pirate boots!! LOL!!
  21. ok so i've had my lovely oranda for a couple of months now, since she is my first i dont really know much about how they are supposed to look. so here's the question.... when looking at her from the back her bum (butt) appears to be almost square?? is this normal?? sorry if this is a strange question
  22. I separated about 15 fish from the 95g (originally 25 goldfish) into the 135g, BUT couldn't help myself and walked back into the fish store and picked up another 5 Orandas. The 4 little koi will go outside into the ponds once the weather warms up. I'm still conflicted about picking up a 300g stocking tank to have the goldfish grow outdoors during the summer. These little fish can be quite addicting. Tank: 135g Uniquarium (aka built in sump) being run by a Rio 2100 pump Lighting: Panorama Blue and White LED light Let me know what you think.
  23. My boyfriend wanted to test out his new flash so I thought it would the perfect opportunity for a mini photoshoot of my oranda whom has recently started changing colors. I named her Shark when I first got her because I thought she was a he. After finding out "he" was actually a she, I decided to change her name to Sharkina. Lol, idk if that's going to stick so I might change it. Here's a picture of when I first got her (about a month ago): Here is her now:
