How many Goldfish

  1. I have a question regarding going on vacation during a QT process. Right now Sushi my son's oranda is in a 20g QT tub with .03% salt, and tomorrow will be the end of round 2 for PraziPro. I am leaving for vacation Thursday morning and returning Tuesday evening. My plan was to do 100% WC and add salt back to .03% on Wed night and also fasting that night until I return on Tuesday and then starting back the prazi schedule round 3 doing an 100%WC before of course. Does this sound right, or should I go about in a different manner. I am just nervous leaving my fish alone in a cycled tank never mind a fish in QT Any input greatly appreciated
  2. After a long day of craziness for me, I saw this and wanted to post. My son Brandon who is 7 is on the Autism spectrum with a delay in speech. He is my big helper and always watches me do water changes and feedings. He now has his own Calico Oranda named Sushi who is in QT. Sushi will then reside in a 20 gal tank in my sons room. He sat and watched his new best friend for over an hour and said to me. Mom I am so happy we have Sushi, I love him These fish not only teach him the importance of caring for them, but also calm him. Just seeing him laugh and giggle and talking to them have dramatically helped him with his learning skills, and he also draws pictures of them. My son knows and reminds me of when WC's are due lol he marks every three days on his calendar, it's something he has never been able to do before. He has the Prazi schedule for his gf and says mom we can't forget to do this and this on these days. It's just amazing to see and hear. I wish these GF could know how much they really mean to me and my son and how much they have helped him Here is Brandon and his Oranda Sushi
  3. Hi everyone, I know I have to fill out a D&D form but I am working a double tonight and have no way of filling it out as of yet but I will give you a run down of what I do know. Citrus my oranda is doing this weird headstand thing where she will rest and immediately start tilting downward and into a headstand position. I have noticed this once on her a few months ago but it was just a day and then everything was fine. My daughter just texted me and said she has been watching her mostly all night and she's been doing it again. She will then swim fine but as soon as she rests she will tilt. I saw citrus this morning no pine coning or prickly scales. I just recently upgraded to a 75g and I have 5 fish in there all 3+ inches from head to tail. The fish that were added were the to babies that were in QT for 5 months with 6 rounds of prazi before they were added. All 5 fish have been prazi'd in the last five months with salt I have an AC110 and a AC70 filter. W/C's are every 3 days 50% and it may extend to 4 days but not usually. I add Prime and Baking Soda and sprinkle koi clay at every water change. last W/C was yesterday 50% They eat 2 times a day and it's always different everyday as far as the food. NLS thera-A - Pro Gold - Repashy Soilent Green- Omega One sinking shrimp pellets -Peas- Hikari Lion Head and veggies. (broccoli is once in a while as I know it makes them gassy) so mostly dark greens and cucumbers. Frozen Brine shrimp and frozen blood worms once a month Meds I have on hand... I'll try to remember everything because I have a med cabinet chocked full. 1) Epsom Salt and canning and pickling salt 2) Seachem Metro and Kana 3) Metro Meds and the other that GF connection made (all unopened still sealed) 4) Melafix I probably have more but I can not remember at the moment. But I am an Amazon prime member and can get anything not available at my LFS ASAP She eats fine, actually she pushes everyone around to get the food so she is still very active and no other visible signs of distress . The last time I weighed her was a few months ago and she was just touching 100g She also has been very round belly wise and has not released any eggs for a good while but she always has been a big bellied girl but not for this long so idk if it's her just fat or not releasing eggs or what. I have a 10g tank not being used so I can QT her in that (gonna be a tight fit she's a beast) I have to dig it out of the basement and clean it up but that is what I have left. I won't be home again until late tomorrow afternoon. If I missed anything please let me know.. Thanks
  4. Hi all I have a 30 gallon tank (Juwel Lido 120) that has not finished cycling yet. I like Ranchus and Orandas and cannot make up my mind wether to get 2 Ranchus, 2 Orandas or one of each when my tank is finally cycled. My concerns with the three options are: - Ranchus: is Juwel Lido 120 too deep for Ranchus, will I just have 2 fish swimming at the bottom? - Orandas: will they get too big for the 30 gallon tank? - One of each: Will they be ok with each other when the Oranda outgrow the Ranchu. Anyone has experience with this pair? Please let me know what you think. Many thanks! Will
  5. Funny thing is, they don't know it's good for them Citrus on the other hand could care less about proper nutrition. She doesn't like her veggies http://vid40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/cdionne77/20150808_175153_zpsl0z09vun.mp4
  6. Hi everyone, I didn't think I would ever do it, but I finally got a 75 gallon Well, I really didn't have a choice as the fishes needed room, The two babies are now 7 months old and I needed to take them out of the 20 gallon and I rescued the blue Oranda so the 40 was too small for Citrus, Skipper and MoJo so bla bla ba I got the 75 with absolutely no grief from the hubby Here is the set up. Now have a AC 110 and AC 70 for filtration. It's coudy because of the Koi Clay I added This is MoJo the blue oranda. This is what he looked like when I got him back in March of this year. The next pic is him now. MoJo now. pic is a little blurry as he never holds still The big guy on the right is Bubba. On the left is Moon-Shine.( They are a mix of Oranda and Ranchu) and are the offspring of Citrus and Skipper Moon-Shine Skipper my love bug Citrus my sweet baby girl Everyone happy as a clam. Sorry for blurry pics Shark bait the Albino bristle nose wasn't in the pics as he's just a baby and is always hiding
  7. There were a couple new things that I added to my pond which made a huge impact. One being a half barrel bio filter which was an upgrade from my prefilter media that I had used for years and thought to be enough. Second, a larger UV light when combined with the bio filter made a big difference in the water quality.
  8. Well its the fouth week in quarantine and he's just about ready to meet the rest of the family. Love this guy.
  9. If you live in southern California or planning on visiting, San Diego to be exact. I just found the pot of gold(fish) at the end of the rainbow. Its a place called Coast Gem USA. They are distributors but sell to the public. Incredible quality and selection without the crazy internet pricing, depending on the season and shipment received. Don't get me wrong, your going to pay for quality goldfish, but not hundreds of dollars for them. It's a family owned business that the owner and son operate. They are awesome guys that are willing to go that extra step to get you what you want. Just thought I share this place because I had a great experience and believe everyone deserves to enjoy the beauty of these fish without breaking the bank. Here is the Facebook link: https://m.facebook.com/coastgemusa?refid=13
  10. Hi! I just finished my water change so thought i would take some snaps. This is my 240 litre tank and my 4 water babies. Hope you like them!!   11. So as you know, I recently lost my beloved goldfish to the giant blue pond in the sky and completely redid my tank. Although I am going to fishless cycle it, I figured it wouldn't hurt to have its inhabitants in QT while I awaited their tank cycle. Kill two birds with one stone, eh? Anywho, without further ado, the fishes! The oranda is named Martin, and the ryukin is named (tentatively) Frasier. Any name suggestions are welcome, too, as these names aren't set. I picked the ryukin for his tiny stature and cute coloration, whereas the oranda I bought solely for his friendly demeanor. In the store, he followed my finger faithfully all over the tank. And now, he is faithfully following his little friend! They are inseparable. I believe that Martin is turning orange. I'm not sure if you can see it in this video, but his underside is tinted orange. . . Not sickly yellow like jaundice, but like a color change. And I love his fins! So you can get a better idea on their sizes;
  12. The first of the year proved to be pretty tough. Lost a few to some new diseases and parasites I personally had never encountered before and some quarantined because of it. They were finally reintroduced back to the community a week ago. I was then forced to re-think my filtration system. Because my pond was made out of porous concrete I thought the good bacteria would colonized and the use of some pre filter media with uv light would be sufficient. I used this system for years and I guess did not think about over stocking and fish getting big that I would have to adjust accordingly. So I made the adjustments with the addition of a home made bio filter. I also thinned out my herd by relocating some of the smaller fish to friends and family. It seemed they were not as resilient as the bigger more established fish. Made a vid of my goldfish community. Hope you enjoy it. FYI: Just lost my beautiful bronze/chocolate oranda, count chocula (named by my kid). Had an on again/off again battle with an internal bacteria. He was featured in this video and will be missed.
  13. New purchase, large ORANDA , it is 10 years since I buy any red and calico oranda and now will try to breed these beautiful creatures. waiting nearly 18 months for friend Genaro to call with the word that he has finally found something good and we rush out to KEM and get them.I choose 8 nice fish 5 girls and 3 boys ( I hope). they range from 15 cm up to the grand black boy of 20 cm. are in excellent condition and enter standard QT this week. soon arrive first alarm when last night (day 4) notice them to be at top of tank. the red lip oranda tells me to check water (pictured)and I nearly fall down as the NO2 reads 3mg+ . 100% dual water changes and new pump . today repeat water changes .this will continue until filter catches up with these pigs. in last picture of full tank view the year old telescopes butterflys can be seen in lower tank and look like a bunch of babys in size. red lips says check the water stupid stupid checks water and it is NO2 full water change, note in lower tank the year old telescope buttery fly which look sooo small. big black about 20 cm calicos these i hope to breed soon and now prepare the breed tanks.

  15. Hi, I had 2 large orandas in a 55g for about one year with weekly water changes. I slacked on my water changes for 2 1/2, maybe 3 weeks (mainly due to unforeseen work needs) and the one oranda developed dropsy and died within about 4 days. That was 2 days ago, I had put him in a qt tank in the evening, she/he was gone by morning. My question is-do I need to do anything for my remaining oranda? He/she seems okay-swimming, eating, no raised scales. My other question is-I would like to take down the 55g & put the oranda in with my large fantail which is in a 40g breeder. When would that be okay to do? I know better about the water changes and have learned a sad lesson the hard way. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Salt at .01% since this past Sunday * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? blood streaked pec fins * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Occasional darting around So this baby Oranda I got on Sunday, and he has blood streaked fins. Previous owner said they were not like that on that Friday and that this is a new thing.Since with me he has been in a 20gal QT for 2 days with a salt concentration of .01% in hopes that the streaking would go away with just the salt and pristine water since he hasn't had that before... No visible change to his bloody fins in the past 48 hours since salt treatment. He eats fine and is swimming well with some occasional darting behavior. I didn't want to jump the gun so I figured I would observe for 48hrs. As I see no improvement and no signs of healing I don't want to lag on this either in case it is some internal infection and not just a bruise... Thanks everyone... My pics are horrible I know sorry my camera is beyond junk Left pec fin is worse than the right pic is from today pic from sunday
  17. So out of the 18 I had 3 now remain. Next week they will be 3 months old. Can't wait to see their color change Sorry pics are not the best, these little guys are fast swimmers And of course Mom and Dad
  18. Hello! I am new to KoKo's and I've been directed to here by a lot of my friends. My large oranda that I had purchased from Petsmart has great wen growth. But they other day there was this random growth that was hanging off the side of her wen and it was jiggling everywhere, it was red and white. I inspected it then put her back in the regular tank with some aquarium salt. Then 5 minutes later, it was gone! People were suggesting she had hole in the head syndrome, but then the next day the tiny hole filled in with a lot of wen! Now the part looks cottony and white, its weird. I am worried and I do not know hwat it is, please help! I don't know how to add any photos or videos
  19. Hello I have been seeking help for weeks now. My goldfish Neo who is a Jumbo Oranda has some swimming issues. I have had him for 2 months now and just this month he has started to do this really scary thing but ONLY AT NIGHT for some reason he floats around upside down most of the night. He dose gulp air sometimes during the day but its not a massive thing like you would see if the water quality was very poor. I have asked and asked people to help and no one has an answer. I am fasting him for 3 days and hoping it will help I just want to take precautions just in case it doesn't work. He lives in a quarantine tank which is a 20 gallon long tank with 40 gallon canister filtration system. I feed him peas repashy gel food solient and super green 50% mixed together and on rare days I feed him southern delight pellets (I have stopped feeding him those because I dot want to make things worse). As of right now I do not know his water parameters I have ran out of strips and haven't been able to go anywhere to get a kit or more strips because there was a hug snow storm that gave us 17 inches of snow. Also haven't done a water change since 2/13/15 because we have no water. But he didn't just start floating this week it has been all month. I try and do 3 water changes a week some are 100% and then some are just 50% they vary depending on what the water looks like. Please someone help me. I don't want my fish to die !

  21. Hi everyone, sorry I have been a way for a while...Working like a crazy lady and school... Babies are doing pretty well they are a little over a month now... Looks like most of them have dad (ranchu) tail but with dorsal fins like mom (Oranda) lol anyway a few pics of them in a container while their tank is getting it's WC... And of course a few pics of Skipper and Citrus Some of these guys still look way to small The biggest one Skipper being the love bug that he is And of course my little piggy girl Citrus
  22. Got a GoPro and decided to test it out. Still getting use to it. Hope you enjoy it.....
  23. So they are almost a month old and 18 fry doing well... I have about 3 that are double the size if not more than the rest. Very quick swimmers, they are still very clear in color. I wonder why these three are the biggest when they hatched around the same time. Pics to follow soon
  24. Hello again fellow Koko members!! Just want to ask your knowledge regarding my Oranda.. What kind is it? Chocolate? Black? Also, would it change its color later on? here are some picture.. he/she is cam shy..
  25. Don't mind the tank in disarray...Doing some updating and had to take the TMS out as my water pressure is horrible and the Python wasn't sucking up the gunk. Also Skipper and Citrus wreaked havoc on the poor anubius so they are gone as well... anyway..... My daughter took a video of them being cute. http://vid40.photobucket.com/albums/e235/cdionne77/Mobile%20Uploads/20141230_201657_zpsxh2n9pvm.mp4
