  1. Well my in-ground pond hasn't progressed any and now I'm kind of moving houses so Rupert, my goldfish from the state fair, who has been living on my counter for months, needs a new home. A while ago I wanted to have a container pond which is what I'm going to do at this rental house. I don't have that much money to spend but I've been looking at these stock tanks. http://www.tractorsu...10-gal--2229862 http://www.tractorsu...apacity-2177201 http://www.tractorsu...apacity-2177227 Are there any opinions on plastic versus galvanized steel? I'm in Texas so it gets really hot and sunny. Also what kind of filter do you think I should get for it? I plan on keeping plants and some goldfish in it. Any tips are welcome Also how should I protect it against my cats, dogs, and other predators?
  2. Hey guys, This is the first time we've ever had a tank this big 40g. So I filled it saturday after cleaning it and put in dechlorinator. I put the Marineland Penguine 350 filter in and it's been running since then. There's nothing else in the tank. I plan on seeding it with substrate/filter media from my already cycled tank for an insta-cycle. It's now cloudy. Will this dissipate after a while, like once I put the fish in? Thanks.
  3. Ive been trying to fined out and oh so intriuged about these panda moors, and panda orandas... etc. But do they keep their coloring? Ive heard some do and some fade. But what does it turn into, if it doasent stay panda colored? And for thos whove never seen a panda...A.K.A White with black markings on the eyes, fins, and maybe on the mouth... basically the markings of a panda just on a goldfish lol. Does anyone have before pictures and a full grown picture of one i.e the same fish in both pictures lol!?!
  4. Here she is! The new 6 and a half inch oranda!
  5. I was bored today and was in a drawing mood. Here is a random charcoal drawing of my goldfish.
  6. Hi! We build a new small pond in our garden. It is only 1000 liters, that is approx 264 gallons. I would like to move 4 of my tank goldies into this new pond as I would like to cut back on the number of aquariums I keep. I know 264 gallons is quite small for a pond but I think it would is fine for 4 goldies? There are 2 commons, 1 oranda and 1 fantail (all petshop qualiyt so the fancies aren't too drastic and can swimm well). When can I move them to my new pond. I know it has to be cycled but I am wondering about temperature range? Is it too soon to transfer them out now? I know the nights are still very cold but the day temperatures get to 15C already... Also would those fancies survive the winter (it gets to freezing temperatures here so the water freezes)? But there will be silt on the bottom so they can hibernate like normal goldies. I already have a pond with commons and comets and they seem to be waking up... Thanks
  7. Hello, my goldfish TV Ryan of nearly a year seems to be sick. I have never been a very good fish keeper, but I've been attempting to improve as time goes on and by lurking these forums. This particular goldfish, a comet, has been a trooper for nearly a year, and he has endured a lot of stressful situations, which is why his sickness now is perplexing. I brought the water to the local PetsMart to be tested, and they told me the pH was very basic; I've been attempting to lower it in time. The worker recommended that the goldfish may have parasites, and we've begun a treatment for him. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level: 0 * Nitrite Level: 0 * Nitrate level: 0 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines): 7.8-8.2, attempting to bring down with Seachem Neutral Regulator and AQ pH Down * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines): Not sure, but it is very hard water Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops?: Usually American Pharmaceuticals test kit with drops, pet store used strips of some sort * Water temperature?: About 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running?: 25 gallons, about seven months * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)?: two sponge filters (not sure of name), 45 gallons and 25 gallons respectively * How often do you change the water and how much?: weekly, 25%, but I've been getting lax lately * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change?: Today, but it was only a gallon; before that, a week ago, 25% * How many fish in the tank and their size?: 1, three inches; was a fantail of 1 inch, but she died * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Just stress coat that can act as a conditioner? Not sure of brand * What do you feed your fish and how often?: Flakes, once every three days, added bloodworms to diet * Any new fish added to the tank?: No * Any medications added to the tank?: Tetra Parasite Guard * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment.: No extensive medicinal treatment before * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus?: Preponderance of black spots on side, preceded by edges of fins turning black; "cotton" on one side; clamped fins * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.?: Bottom sitting; used to be very friendly, but now needs coaxing I would just like some additional advice. Does it sound like parasites? The store clerk said that the treatment will not work immediately, but I worry that I will make a mistake and inadvertently hurt TV Ryan. I apologize if this post is in the wrong board, and I will delete it immediately if there is a problem.
  8. Hi Everybody! I'm new to this website, so bare with me. This is the first question i have ever posted on this website. So- now, my question:) I had two young Ryukin goldfish in my tank, but they recently died from a gill disease which i tried to treat, but the medicine didn't work in time. I really liked having the Ryukins, and i always kept the water quality perfect, and did 25% water changes 2x a week. I fed them a pinch of food every morning. So- can anybody recommend the hardiest breed of fancy goldfish that doesn't get sick easily? I am going to get 2 more goldfish today or tomorrow, but i don't want them to get sick and die like my previous ones did:(. My tank is NOT large enough for a comet or common goldfish, and i don't plan on getting a tank that is, so please recommend fancy goldfish breeds. THank you! -Mandie
  9. I just saw these two and knew they were the fish I wanted. I didn't even look to see what kind they are. Could somebody help me out? I know they are either common goldfish or comets. There names are Hercules(gold) and Titan (white & gold). I would really appreciate it and so would they. :goldfish:sorry about the quality they are less blurry in person and way more adorable! Hercules has a messed up dorsal fin I call it his battle scar.
  10. I have been eying these beautiful wood goldfish carvings made by the Tung Hoi Aquarium Co. in China for a long time now, and guess what my husband gave me for christmas?! I got a panda butterfly carving, it's so lovely. It came in a really neat box. We both liked it so much that we went a got a display case from Ikea for it! Might start a collection... Here are a couple photos of more carvings they make: Pearlscale, celestial, ranchu, and ryukin. These are large-scale versions installed at a park in China. A ryukin and a tosakin. http://solid-gold-fi...sh-carving.html
  11. I would like to say hi first of all... new to forum and am really excited by what i have seen so far... first of all just to talk about my main tank... 46.8g bowfront tank with a marineland c360 and a marineland penguin 150 to filter... pretty well planted , have driftwood and some live rocks. i have 1 calico oranda, 1 blue oranda, 1 white and red ryukin and 1 red ryukin. a few snails. 2 34" life glo bulbs T5HO and a 20 inch air stone. first questioin... would i be overdoing it by adding a school of about 9 white cloud minnows?? even with extra filtration i also do 20 - 25% water changes every 3rd day in my main tank... what do you guys think?? second question... i have read about having carbon in my filter and have come to the conclusion that it is probably not the BEST thing for my plants and is not doing anything too beneficial for me as i do constant water changes. what else can i put in my filter that will be more beneficial for my plants and fish?? i.e polishing pads?? ceramic balls? thank you all in advance!!
  12. Sorry I post so often, but I recently removed the grave in my tank, so now its barebottom. It looks pretty, and I love how easy it is to clean!!! However, I am starting to feel kinda guilty for removing the gravel that my fishies enjoyed playing with so much. They were always picking it up and having a bunch of fun!!! Do you think they miss it? It it mean to not have some form of entertainment in there. Is there any kind of home-made toy or something that my fish might enjoy? thanks! -Mandie

  15. Hello fellow fish lovers, I am writing you all today because I've had enough of the horrible treatment fish receive as pets. I am starting a fish advocacy front to address the misconceptions about fish keeping that lead to millions of deaths of pet fish. I'm hoping to get people interested in joining in on this. I want to change how the world sees fish. We've all seen the videos on YouTube that appall all of us. This kind of abuse it what arises because the general population does not have respect for fish as a species. They deserve rights, just like cats, dogs, and other pets. I am looking for anyone who wants to take part in changing the world! Web developers, writers, photographers, fish gurus, and just general fish lovers! Please let me know if you're interested. I'm in the process of building a website currently. Send me a message, reply to this topic or send me an e-mail at hbrolander@gmail.com Thanks guys!!
  16. Ammonia Level ? * Nitrite Level ? * Nitrate level ? * Ph Level, Tank ? * Ph Level, Tap ? * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops. None * Water temperature? Not sure * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 10 gallon, for about a year * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Aqueon Meduim * How often do you change the water and how much? once every 2 months, 85% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? about 3 weeks ago, about 85% * How many fish in the tank and their size? 4, about 2 inches * What kind of water additives or conditioners? API Tap Water Conditioner * What do you feed your fish and how often? Tetra Sinking Goldfish Granules * Any new fish added to the tank? Yes. One small fantail and one black moor. * Any medications added to the tank? No. * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. A long time ago, one of my tanks had protozoa, killing all my fish. The pet store guy recommended a protozoan killer called "Aquari-Sol". My entire tank died, and he recommended I use a few drops on the other tank, just to prevent another outbreak. I did for about the next 2 weeks. I haven't used it again in that tank in about a year (the outbreak happened a few weeks after the tanks was set up) * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? There are red spots on the fish that look like blood. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Behavior appears to be normal. About a week ago, I placed two new fish in my tank. About 3 days ago, I noticed bloody-red dots on the side of my shubunkin. I wondered if the newly-added black moor was attacking it, but black moors (or so I have heard through research) are rarely aggressive. Besides, the shubunkin could have easily out-swam the black moor. In addition to this, I've observed the black moor for any signs of aggression, but the most it has done is gently nibble the sides of a fish it coincidentally came across. The shubunkin's red dots looked as if someone had stained a paper with a red sharpie, just allowing the dark red ink to saturate in one area. There were also a bit of what looked like blood to be on its fins. Now, it is brown on its fins, as if the blood dried off. The two giant red dots that were once on its sides are gone, but new dots have begun to form, and a small red dot on its fin has GROWN. It can't be blood, can it? Is something feasting on the shubunkin? If it is, wouldn't there be blood in the water? I did not find the water to be red. Could it possibly be minor internal bleeding from being over-fed? Am I over-exaggerating? Here is a picture of the growing red dot under its fin. Notice there are also some red stuff on its fins. I may seem paranoid, and I apologize, but I don't want any more fish to die, since my last tank was destroyed by protozoan.
