  1. Hello, my goldfish is 1 year old and I just did a full tank change. Now I noticed white growth from one eye and maybe a little on the other eye. What is it? what should I do? My first goldfish!!

  4. Hello, I have been keeping 2 goldies in a 4.5 gallon aquarium for 2 years and decided to find someone who would be willing to take care of them and offer appropriate conditions. I found someone locally who has 300 litre pool with only goldies in it and would welcome my fishies. I use public transportation to move and don't know what would be the process of transporting and handling fishies. Is there something to consider when introducing fishies to new place of habitat that have to do with their adaptation? Is there a caution to consider in how other goldfish will respond to new goldfish? I heard stories where fish would eat other fish. One last thing. I use Prime dechlorinator to dechlorinate water. Today was first time that I forgot to use it when I changed 100% of water. I left goldfish in it for 1 minute until I put 2 drops of Prime into fishtank. Is there something to be concerned about? Thanks!
  5. Hello everyone, I haven't been on the forums for a while. I have been 'fish-sitting' for some friends since the summer. They won this little guy (and his friend who sadly didn't make it ) at a carnival. They didn't realize how big a tank they would need for a single tail goldfish and will not be able to keep it. Of course the carnival people handed them 2 fish in a little critter carrier and just said to feed them. Anyway, I've been keeping him for the last 3 months or so in a 20gallon but I cannot keep him forever. I would like to find him a good home, he's still small, about 1.5 inches. I took some pics but haven't been able to upload. If anybody is interested please let me know, I'm in Westchester County, NY. Thank you!!!
  6. Who is going to be watching the MF Aquatics auction on Facebook , Thursday (1st December) ? It's great that the UK is following suit and we're getting more fancies!
  7. Ok guys now i think its time to share a diary of my breeding process. Even though i believe breeding any living thing is not totally up to us because we are not creator but we could try, lets get optimistic and start crossing our fingers. these are parents of my upcoming goldies. Father "Tattey"calico and mother "Aandey" egg shaped ranchu Step father "Paatali" common veiltail
  8. No I am not asking historically which species of fish man first pulled from its natural habitat and put into containers of water/man made ponds. I'm asking which you as a both betta and gold fish owner bought first. Did you start on bettas then get into goldfish? Or the other way around? Which do you have more of (fish count and tanks)? For me it was bettas first then goldfish. I have a lot of planted betta tanks -9 actually, 1 is my husband's betta. I have to stay out of petstores to resist buying more bettas (so many lovelies!) and turning my stored/qt tanks into active planted betta tanks. I enjoy the 2 goldfish I have and they enjoy their 1 40g breeder tank (really love hand feeding and handling them-can do the same with some of my bettas but have to be so much more delicate with the smaller fish), but I don't see myself getting more goldfish/goldfish tanks... unless I can get my hands on a 6 foot long tank for a good price... but around here those cost a bloody arm 'n a leg.
  9. Ok so I'm new to blogs so I thought I would try one. It all started when I was 4 years old I went to a fair with my family and me and my brother (who was a couple of years old than me) got 2 goldfish and a small tank. It turns out the 2 fish were a common and comet. My common was called Goldie (how original lol) and my brother's was called Shark (cos it looked like a shark lol) and my dad helped us put them in the tank and set it up. After a few months the goldfish had gotten a couple of inches so we bought them a bigger tank and a filter etc. we also bought a few smaller minnows that then got eaten . Fast forward maybe a year or so and we got the goldfish a bigger tank which I still have its about 130 litres or something like that and we thought that was HUGE!! We then bought more goldfish and minnows etc. like rosy red minnows (I still have a rosy red after about 8 years) and our 2 original goldfish lived 4 years and got I would say about 4-5 inches maybe bigger. Well over the years I have learned a lot more about fish and now have 5 tanks and a pond. Two of the tanks that I have inside are goldfish tanks 1 is 160 litres and the other is about 130 litres. In both I have 4 goldfish (yes I know too many trying to get a new bigger tank for them all) in one tank I have my telescopes and in the other I have normal eyed goldfish. Also in my pond I have single tail goldfish, about 4 fancy goldfish (3 orandas and 1 fantail), a couple of Koi and 2 sturgeons. After I figure out how to make sure the link is to the correct photo I will attach pics

  15. I got my first pair of goldfish yesterday and am trying to get them use to feeding.. where they came from fed floating pellets which I've been told is bad as they can suck in air and get swim bladder (sb) issues. So I bought sinking Hikari Goldfish pellets as that's what was available (if there are better pellet brands you'd like to recommend please do so). Now I'm just having trouble getting them use to me in front of tank+ removing hood=food.. I don't want to foul the water leaving pellets in to land and since I used Black Diamond 'sand' substrate the food tends to blend in a bit. One of them-a blue-black oranda I think is the color term- keeps going into the anubias when I open the lid so having a hard time getting them to see pellets, the other a calico fantail has no problem staying out in the open but only wants to eat pellets as they sink not after they hit the substrate. I soaked the pellets in water for 2+ minutes with a bit of DIY garlic exact before each feeding attempt. I'm curious if anyone has used feeding dishes to put pellets or other foods in at the bottom without having a mess all over the substrate? I might just be over thinking it as a new goldfish owner (not new to fish-have tropicals, other cold water (white cloud minnows), dwarf shrimp, and bettas), since they're the first fish that could eat plants that I've kept with plants.. don't want them making a salad bar out of the anubias because they haven't figured out sinking pellets yet...I put in a cucumber with them, seen a few pecks at it but not much. Anyways any helpful tips would be appreciated!
  16. Hi everyone I thought I would just show you guys the new art work that I am starting I have done one goldfish drawing that I spent a great amount of time on which was of my goldfish George who sadly passed away but I just started a new one earlier this night Here is the picture of the fish: Here is the drawing so far : Hope you enjoyed
  17. I was wondering what matters most when stocking, size or number of fish. In general I know the stocking parameters follow 15-20 gallons per fish. I have 4 Goldie's (2 telescopes @ 3 inches each, 1 oranda @ 4 inches and 1 oranda @ 2.5 inches-all measurements are without tail length). The 2 teles & small oranda have been in a 40 breeder since November, no problems. The small oranda is 1 year of age, I've had 1 tele x 1 year and has grown maybe 1/4 inch- same as the other tele but I've had him x 2 years, I've had the other oranda 2 years and I'm pretty sure he was mature when I got him-he hasn't changed much at all. I actually don't know if they are boys or girls. My ideal goal is a 75 gallon, right now I have a spare 55. Any thoughts are appreciated.
  18. Oh, they're so, SOOO cute. I loveeee Ryukins and so hope to own a nice big one like one of these someday. These seem to all move well and look super healthy. The little music they had was nice, too. I love all goldfish - but Ryukins are my favorites.
  19. Background Information: I am currently 15 years old. I have just entered High School. Back when I was younger, my father has at least a 50 or 75 gallon tank. With a ton of fish, goldfish, angel fish, algae suckers. He had everything in that tank. But unfortunately within a couple of years they all died he stored away everything he bought for them. Substrate, silk decor, hardscape. He has all this, including the good old tank in a storage unit near his restaurant. One day I will go and retrieve it all. The Start of An Aquarium: I was out and about, staying up, late nights with my cousins. Going downtown, like any average teenager and his crew. But one day, me and one of my cousins thought it would be cool to get some fish. So what the heck, why not? I brought home 4 common goldfish, or are they Rosy Red Minnows? I am still unsure about this. I brought them home in a small 1 gallon pet carrier, those cheap plastic one's you find everywhere at WalMart. I kept them like that for a while. It was a terrible living condition for them. Yahoo! Answers - Going On KoKo Forums As I gained worried about my little babies I started posting questions on good ol` Yahoo! Answers. Then someone replied. She went by the name of Sarah. She was very worried for my Goldie's and so I decided to give her my EMail address as in hope she could help a beginner like me, through my journey, and sure enough, She did. After emailing her for at least 2 weeks, which is now mostly 4 weeks, she told me about a very nice website that I now know and love. KoKo Forums. Sarah is known as GoldieGeek. This is a dedicated shout-out to Sarah AKA GoldieGeek. Thank You! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Entry 1: March 15th, 2014 Alright, so I already love KoKo forums. No doubt about it. Everything is going good, unfortunately one Goldfish has already died to an unknown cause. I know only have 3 now. They are named Zeus, Skittles and Comet. I do however, want to re-home all three, and get either a Oranda or a Ryukin. I am unsure. Does anyone in the Lebanon, New Hampshire area would like to take my little buggers? My aquarium is now going good. I have a 10 gallon tank, with around a 1/4 inch layer of substrate. I also spray painted a very pretty blue background a couple of days before. It makes the tank look a more part of ocean or lake. The substrate is red by the way. I know this is a short entry, But I don't have too much more too ad. Thank you for reading this entry!
  20. Thought I would start a blog for my own benefit to have a record and something to look back on and see how far we have come, hopefully posting here some other people may be able to get some benefit or enjoyment out of the process as it continues also!! In less than 6 month’s our goldfish experience has been full of twists and turns! During this time we’ve made plenty of mistakes, gained a lot of experience whilst our tank has evolved into a larger form 3 times already! Brief History: - We started with a 3 gallon, “all-in-one” tank and a black moor called “Soka”, as a Christmas present for my partner’s child. Unfortunately he passed away whilst we were on holiday in Thailand. - We then purchased a bubble eye, “Hype”. We also upgraded our tank to a 9 gallon tank we received for the price of peanuts. - This tank has now been converted into our QT tank at the moment, as our new 55 gallon (210L) is nearing the end of its cycling process. Our 55 gallon tank in the beginning, kitted out with fake ornaments/plants that we received when we purchased the tank second hand. image url upload Since the picture above we have done the following : - Added another 6500K fluro tube giving it a brighter, natural lighting colour to the human eye. - Removed all the fake accessories whilst we hunted for more natural, aesthetically pleasing decorations. We went hunting along the Yarra River and were successful in finding some “driftwood” pieces that we liked the look of, as we did not feel like paying $30+ for a piece of wood at our LFS. Here is a picture of Grey sampling our new find, as we soaked the wood to remove some tannins whilst we waited to place it on the fire at night and tried to boil them. image host We were unable to find any suitable rock’s on our driftwood expedition so we bought these from Rayonne Aquarium. post img We also purchased some Prazi powder from guppsysaquariums as it was the cheapest option by far, especially compared to our LFS. We also decided to get some subwassertang and riccia sent to us while we were at it, as we are experimenting with plants that may or may not work in the tank along with our goldfish. Thought we would try out luck in attaching the riccia to the stones and see how it fares... photos upload Here is a picture of the tank as it stands currently, it is a bit cluttered at the moment as we were a bit rushed before I had to return to site. adult image sharing We have a lot more re-arranging planned in the near future as we add our driftwood, more plants and finally our fish in once the QT process has finished! I shall post pictures as this progresses
  21. Day One: Today is day 1 of my journey into goldfish. To find out more about me, please visit my profile! So,my current project into goldfish is setting up a 20 gallon tank. Now yes, yes I am aware of the gallons per fish rule. And not to fret, I will only be purchasing One goldie for this tank. This 20 gallon tank is the perfect example of your typical 80-90's aquarium. Wood-grain trim, with a lovely wooden stand. So, you get the picture. It isnt exactly...perfect,I Personally prefer a minimalist look to tanks to show case the fish. With this being said my plan is to have a black background, black bare bottom, and touch up the stand with a shiney black redo. I will be also making a trip over to my local auto store to pick up some black trim tape to redo the trim on the tank. Today I picked up 3 bottles of black matte paint from Five Below and a can of black spray paint from wal mart. So this is phase one. When I got back home I tested the water on my 10 gallon divided aquarium that is home to my betta's. Everything checked out at 0 and pH was at 7.2 so it seems like everything is good to go! I will be using the media from my 10 gal to start it up in the 20. I will post pictures as I do my tank and stand. *Note: This blog is meant to be written like taking notes in a journal, so excuse any poor grammar. Just jotting down my thoughts as they come! 23. I can't seem to post a pic from Dropbox; I'm trying to share the link. Some of you may remember that my new baby comet, Faramir Fish, was ill this past winter. You all helped me a lot, and I wanted to share a pic of him now. He's twice as big as he was and doing very well. This should be the URL, at any rate. I don't know why I can't post the pic. https://www.dropbox.com/s/62wtom3j0m51l96/2015-07-30%2018.51.59.jpg?dl=0
  24. So I have purchased a Ryukin and he will be shipped out on Monday. And before he gets here I'd like to know maybe a few different verities of foods I could go out to my local grocery store and buy to prepare for him. I have brine shrimp ordered a shining pellet food and the repashy gel food but I'd like to keep a source or fresh veggies too feed him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you in advance for the great help!
