  1. Actually, salt is fine in low concentrations for bettas - although some don't deal well with it. I would suggest picking up a bottle of bettafix, it's helped my little guy who I bought with terrible fin rot. Keep an eye on the temperature and turn down the filter power a little bit. Also check the parameters and make sure they are similar to what they were while you were at school - espescially the pH. Good luck!
  2. I think you will be fine with a betta in an unfiltered 1 gallon tank. How long is he in there? He may get used to it, I had a betta in a 2 gallon with a filter and after a few weeks, he got used to it and new exactly how to avoid the current and to grab his food quickly before it swirled away
  3. How long has he been in the 1 gallon tank? Sometimes the move from one tank to another will stress out a betta, it might take him some time to get used to the extra space. It took my little guy almost a week to get used to his 2.5 gallon.
  4. He is a beauty! I love it when they start flaring - I usually tell my Red "go get 'em! you show em' who's boss!" unless he is flaring at me, then I tell him to "put it away" LOL
  5. Does the bump look like its growing from the inside or its sitting on the outside of his skin? Perhaps you can try salt? I believe its 1/8 teaspoon per gallon? Just have clean water available to put him in if he reacts poorly to the salt. For now though, I think good clean water and some love should be good enough. Give him a few days to get used to you and his new surroundings, maybe the bumps will clear up on their own.
  6. Congrats Jen!! I can't wait to hear how it all goes. Good luck!
  7. Great idea! I am glad you were able to come up with something.
  8. Lucky for me, I have friends who really don't care what keeps me happy as long as its legal and harmless. Although most didn't show the same interest level as I do! I get teased by some, but everyone was all teary eyed when they cmae over and found out that my goldie died and I had packed the 10 gallon tank away. There are now anxiously awaiting the setup of my used 75 gallon tank. So, they will come around and at least learn to tolerate your hobby. The goldies will steal their hearts eventually!
  9. Its scary that some people think animals are less important than humans. I never heard of that rule about live animals in science fairs either. But, then again, my school was never big on science fairs.
  10. LOL! My female bullies me!
  11. Awwwww.... he is just too cute!! congrats!
  12. You can keep just a small amount of gravel to hold the plants down - making sort of a little island.
  13. Awww, they are all so cute! Congrats!
  14. Great tanks everyone! Its giving me some ideas for mine. I can't stand waiting to get it set up... its killing me!!
  15. hmmm.... I will be setting up a 75 gallon tank, and I was thinking of getting a python, the water wasting bothers me too, but then again, I am not sure what I can do with that much water aside from watering my plants....
