  1. Thanks Ryukin Girl. I'll tell him not to use that site anymore and hope my fiance? listens. He tries to help, but doesn't understand that the only info I trust comes from Koko's. We have not added salt of any kind to the tank since Aug. 15 and your suggestion sounds good. The only part I may have a problem with is holding Kuroshima to put on hydrogen peroxide. He can be feisty.
  2. I can't remember if I've put pics of Kigakari in this thread yet, but he's changing color very quickly so here's some even if I have: Here's one of Kuroshima and Kigakari:
  3. It seems to be spreading again and looking at it today makes me think it's a build-up of slime coat. The pictures don't capture how it appears to me, unfortunately. My fiancee says he was following the Salt Treatment for Goldfish from Goldfish-Emergency.com when he mixed Epsom and Aquarium salt. He says he did not salt above 0.1%, but I'm going to have to look at the salt measurements on this site to be sure of that. I don't think he added baking soda like the instructions called for either. If it is slimecoat, why is it building up in only one spot?
  4. I am working on pictures and I should be able to nail my fianc?e down about the salt tomorrow. I've tried swishing cartridges before and haven't ever been able to get them clean enough for my liking. We are careful to stagger changing them out. Sorry it's taking so long, the fish live with him until the wedding. I forgot to mention that he also added Melafix on Aug. 8, probably whatever dose the bottle said.
  5. There are river rocks in the 55, a martini, brandy, and margarita glass (all giant size), two disc bubblers and a bubble wand (for a 20 gallon). I don't know what the filter cleaning schedule is. I think my fianc?e replaced half the cartridges in the HOBs two weeks ago. I'll ask him when he gets off work.
  6. [*]Test Results for the Following: [*]Ammonia Level? 0ppm [*]Nitrite Level? 0ppm [*]Nitrate level? 20ppm [*]Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? approx. 7.5 (lowest HR pH kit; almost highest on reg. pH kit) [*]Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines)? N/A-I can get it later tonight [*]Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API-drops [*]Water temperature? 78.5 [*]Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 55gal. Running since March with one Oranda, 3 since April [*]What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? 1 canister: Fluval 305 & 2 HOBs: Aqueon 55 [*]How often do you change the water and how much?Normally once a week 30-50%; since Aug. 15 25% everyday [*]how many days ago was the last water change and how much? Yesterday, 25% [*]How many fish in the tank and their size? 2 Orandas: Kuroshima=3 inch body, 1.5 inch tail approx./ Kigakari=2.5 inch body, 1.5 inch tail [*]What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime and crushed coral; had been adding Stability up until this week [*]What do you feed your fish and how often? Saki-Hikari Fancy Goldfish [*]Any new fish added to the tank?2 orandas were added in May [*]Any medications added to the tank? Epsom salt and Aquarium salt to 0.1% from Aug. 8 - Aug. 15 [*]List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment.See above [*]Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Kuroshima has had a NON-Fuzzy white spot on the left middle of his wen for about 6 weeks now. 3 weeks ago it looked like it was spreading which is why my fiancee and I started salting. [*]Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? He very, very occasionally goes nose down floaty-to the point of almost flipping over, but never has any problem righting himself. He also has no problems swimming. A big part of my concern stems from the fact that I lost one of my orandas this week. I quarantined her on Sunday because she appeared to have lost part of her wen, a section of scales on her left side, was pineconing, and had frayed ventral fins. I took some advice from an lfs here and tried treating her with Erythromycin -she died Tuesday. For the moment, the only troubling symptoms from either of the other two are what I have described above, but of course I'm still worried. I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions for what I should do next.
  7. If you need a first hand account, I often get a reading of 0.25 ppm ammonia for a few hours after using Prime, but it's always zero again in 24 hours. I use the API test kit.
  8. I had read the wen was more like a wart than a tumor. So what's the difference between a wart and a tumor?
  9. Ah. Portable cooler at W*%-M*8t I meant.
  10. Use jugs or see if the have a type of portable water cooler at nooppee to carry water from your house with you. I wouldn't risk the well water. Sounds like he'll be stressed one way or another, best thing seems like it would be not subjecting him to high iron. But, I am not an expert at all. Would you be keeping him in the same tank as well? I think that would help. I am not very experienced with this situation though.
  11. I have my two new Orandas in the big tank with my Kuroshima. Tamago is the dark one, Kigakari is the panda, and Kuroshima is my big orange Oranda: IMAG0445 by onefish3, on Flickr Does anybody want to make a guess on Tamago's color? I know some would call it chocolate, but honestly it looks more green/bronze to me.
  12. They weren't watching you to make you feel guilty, they were waiting for you to give them some of the sardines.
  13. Somebody ought to do a thread like this for they other Oranda colors. You know, a red Oranda thread, calico Oranda thread, etc.... Could do one for each breeds' popular color types really. I like seeing the different ones in the same thread.
  14. Is Ziggy the Ryukin? He's so pretty. And I like how you're doing your backgrounds. I may give that a try sometime soon.
  15. S/he has the best fins. They look like they all have the same curvature. Not to mention the awesome wen.
  16. I can still not see your sig, but I'm guessing Hugo is the Shubunkin and Wakka is the calico Oranda? Those are my favorites too, if so.
  17. It's not that important to me really. If I had to make a guess, Kigakari is male, because of the breeding stars on his front pectoral fins. Tamago is the mystery. Thanks for the comments everybody.
  18. New Guys first (I do not know their gender, and forgot to ask Steve Hopkins when I got them from Raingarden...): Tamago Kigakari My Old Guys: Chupwalla; he has swim bladder problems now, so he pretends to be a rock most of the time. Bless him, I don't think he knows he's orange. http://www.flickr.com/photos/onefish3/5765657597/ Kuroshima-My boy. I know they're awfully grainy. I'm in the middle of a housing transition, and have been using my phone for basically everything, including photos. But I'm proud of my fish, and their new housing is much more stable and comfortable than mine right now I'm happy to say. Well, the new guys are in a 20 gallon quarantine, but it's still fairly comfortable I'd like to believe.
  19. My favorite's the 3rd down. I like a shorter body on an oranda. But all are great! (Didn't your finance guy tell you to quit buying fish?)
  20. I love naming my fish! When I got the last two Orandas I wanted them to have Japanese names like my Kuroshima (who was named by Koko's!). So now the Orandas are Kuroshima (black stripe, because he had one), Tamago (it's wen looked like a fried egg to me), and Kigakari-he is the most nervous, darty goldfish I've ever had. And my one ranchu is named Chupwalla, which means "quiet fellow" and is from Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie. He's my baby.
  21. Better skin? Ppffftttt. Seriously though, you've got fans and stuff right? Cuz I don't know how people survive without ac here. Rock Hill's humidity isn't as bad as closer to the coast, at least. It's still bad, but not as bad.
  22. Do you know it's illegal to sell a turtle under 4 inches? And they still are sold in little pet stores. I know, because my parents bought 2 for my daughter. :l
  23. Glad to hear you and yours are all doing so well.
