  1. As for the nitrate increase, would you consider hanging a plant off the tank rim like a pothos or bamboo whose roots could absorb some of the nitrate waste? You could still maintain your water schedule then. To note, 15 nitrates isn't too bad of a number to keep them at as long as your fish still look happy and healthy. i have been looking high and low for a chart that demonstrates how the (pH of the X volume of your water being added) + (pH of the X volume of water in the tank) = (acceptable pH difference in overall volume) But I have yet to find one so I will continue my searches but If I do I will share it because I think it would be very useful information to have for goldfish owners.
  2. Thank goodness I keep this going as I had forgotten how long the prazi had been in!! 2 more days and then we're done round 2 and salt!
  3. Very pretty fish! They are retaining their colours nicely. How often do you weigh them?
  4. It's funny that you have nice fall weather to enjoy and I scraped 2" (5cm) of snow off my car this morning. You're fish look happy.
  5. Beautiful well fed fish, though I'm sure they think they aren't fed enough.
  6. Wow amazing video! Thank you so much for sharing. It was interesting to see the broad tails coming back into fashion and there were some short body varieties of some breeds that were long bodies previously, very interesting to see the breeding trends
  7. that is a funny story! I'm in awe of your pictures
  8. Round 1 of prazi and 1 week of salt at 0.3% is done. Round 2 is in and I will do one more week of salt. They still have no signs of flukes as far as I can tell. The orange fella with the open areas seems to have a thicker slime coat nut his wounds seem to be getting smaller. Still doing daily or the odd every other day water changes. They get fed twice a day and seem happy. i will admit difficulty knowing when the 3 white fish are either just generally pink/red at fin join sites or whether it is an indication of irritation.
  9. It depends on my mood. Recently it's been alternative and tragically hip songs. I've been doing them after the babes go to bed so I can't have anything that causes me to dance as the tank are above their ceilings.
  10. we are kinda in the same boat. Gassed up water in the tap system and super hard well water that drives down the pH once the bubbles leave. Do you have a way to measure the levels of Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate in your tank? I am also wondering if you cycled your tank or not. I agree what you are doing sounds like it would take a lot of room but I think there are a few ways we could suggest your water changes could be done differently once the needed information is answered. I look forward to your responses.
  11. We all know the long list of reasons why water changes can be beneficial but how do you make it fun? i like cranking the tunes up or listening to a podcast. Anyone else?

I mainly used this blog for QT but I think I'm going to start using it for thoughts now. Living in Canada puts me at a serious disadvantage when it comes to purchasing fish. The weather and rural distance does not allow me an opportunistic approach for receiving fish. The weather is too brutal, no matter how many precautions are taken, to ensure a fish would be received with quality of health. The fish that I have raised that were bred here are quite hearty and I do believe that breeding locally is the only way to ensure the heartiness of the fish. Since we are planning to remodel our pond anyways, we plan to adapt it for the purposes of breeding. The last time I looked at the genetics I believe it was 5-7 generations before getting an approximation of the fish I want using a 1-2% holding rate each generation. This is something that is becoming more possible in my current situation. I don't know if what I am looking for is something that is attributed to a breed particularly. For a while I wanted a veilteil/watonai thing. I know now I want rounded caudals, a thick peduncle, smooth arch in back. As for face features I am really unsure! The two things that crop up first when breeding single tails is the double tail and the telescope eye. I should be able to focus on getting either of those consistent for a while and focusing on the other 'health traits' I want. this dream of mine will projectedly take 10-15 years.
  13. I did not have to do a water change today cause the levels were fine but I did one anyways because there was soooo much poop! tub A with the 3 fish are all happy and pooping lots I see individual scales missing but nothing like the other guy
