  1. Mïllïe took a sudden turn and passed away yesterday, I just thought you all should know. Thank you for your help. It seems there was more wrong than met the eye. I'm still in shock, wide awake at 3 am beating myself up even though I know there's no point now. Thanks for trying to help me help her. I miss her so much and everything is so raw, but I'll feel better with time. *hugs*
  2. I wish she would flip back over too! I'm keeping close tabs on her water and watching her eyes. One seems to get red for a day or two and then get better. When you say salt, do you mean aquarium salt or epsom?
  3. Millie has come around nicely and has been acting like I NEVER feed her! I put her back in with the others today and will keep everyone posted. While I'm on the topic of Millie though, I'm wondering what I can do to repair damaged fins?
  4. She's still on the bottom of the tank. I'm in search of some duckweed at the moment, but I doubt it will do much. She's been upside down on/on her side on the bottom of the tank for two months. She's having recurring eye problems (they heal up pretty quickly, though). I've moved her to a 20g bare bottom in my nice, quiet living room so she can live out the rest of her days in peace. I suppose we could mark this one solved (kinda?) unless anyone has anything else I can try....
  5. Thanks! The plants are very new. I think I actually got them after I got the oranda and ryukin... I would hope that they aren't rotting.. I did have a sprig of anacharis that was looking pretty grubby, so I took that out. Nitrite this morning was 0. =]
  6. So it seems like the salt and pristine water conditions have really helped her. She's still floating at the top of the QT, but her scales have settled and she's not going upside down anymore!
  7. The metro is powdered. The scales have gone down a bit since first posting.
  8. I haven't contacted him again as he only guarantees live delivery, and last time we emailed he said that she had never ha any issues while she was in his care. I have melafix, Metronidazole, and an older bottle of Pimafix that came with the tank I got off craigslist - not sure if it's any good.
  9. Big temperature difference between main tank and QT, so she's acclimating right now in a tub. I hate putting her in such a small container, so I gave her some frozen blood worms and she is gobbling those up. No loss of appetite here, thank goodness. As far as whether it's on both sides, it seems like it is, but it's more pronounced on her left. Here's another photo: Added aquarium salt to the main tank. Ryukin and moor are wondering where she went!
  10. I'll transfer her to QT now. Thanks, all. Also forgot to mention there are two anubias, a crested java fern, and a few sprigs of anacharis in the tank as well, with black flourite sand. The thing that's bothering me the most is that the nitrite is so high all the time. I've never had that happen before... =\
  11. Not sure why it isn't letting me post the YouTube video...
  12. Hi all and thanks for reading my post. Here's the required information: Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) ~.25 * Nitrite Level(Tank) ~.25-.50 * Nitrate level(Tank) 5-10ppm * Ammonia Level(Tap) ~.25-.5 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) 0 * Ph Level, Tank 7.6 * Ph Level, Tap 8.8, settles to mid 7s after 24 hours Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit - API Master - drops * Water temperature? ~74 * Tank size 44g bow - running for 2-3 months. * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Recently replaced penguin 330 hob with sunsun canister - rated 525 gph * How often do you change the water and how much? Daily, ~50%. Filter replacement caused bump in nitrogen cycle, introduced tetra safestart plus, nitrites and nitrates increase rapidly right now. * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? Today, 50% (test results are post WC) * How many fish in the tank and their size? Three - two roughly 4-5 inches with tail, and the oranda at roughly 6 inches with trail. * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime, Natural Regulator, baking soda * What do you feed your fish and how often? Repashy soilent green, 2x daily * Any new fish added to the tank? The oranda and ryukin are new as of 2-3 weeks ago. * Any medications added to the tank? No * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. No treatments * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or results Fins are still frayed from shipping, scales seem to be protruding slightly. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Floating at the top, sometimes flipping upside down... Test results pre-WC: PH 7.4-7.6 Ammonia .25 Nitrite 2-5 Nitrate 20-40 Kh 125 GH 70 We've had Mïllïe a few weeks. She didn't take shipping from Dandy Orandas well, and was a little floaty shortly after we received her, but on the advice of Ken at DO, we simply watched her water conditions and removed the bubbler from her QT tank and she came around. She did very well for the next couple of weeks, and I'm an impatient newbie, so I put her in the main tank with my black moor and ryukin. She's been in there for a week and a half, and during that time she was okay, but I switched filters and despite my best efforts to keep the cycle going, bumped it somehow and the nitrite results were through the roof. That's when I went out and got some safe start. I came home today and she was floating on the top, so I tested the water even though I knew I was going to have to do a big WC, because I wanted to have before and after results for my post. I was planning on posting about Mïllïe anyway because I wasn't sure if her scales were slightly lifted when she came to me or not, and thought that might be a problem. My husband said they've been like that since we got her, but I don't know for sure. Sorry for the terrible quality of these photos, they're the best I can do right now... Also took a video that might make it a little clearer... Thanks in advance for your help!
  13. Thanks guys, it looks like she's going to be on the bottom for some time. I've been siphoning off waste and keeping the water as pristine as I can so she doesn't get any infections. Despite there possibility of scale damage, my husband wants to try making her a little life jacket so she could possibly be upright for the remainder of her time with us. I'll post a video if he can work it out. I know it's not the best for her, but if she can tool around well enough, we could put her in the big tank and she won't be lonely.
  14. So it's been a few days since I started treating the water with baking soda and doing salt dips... She seems to be more active and is even swimming a little bit off the bottom, but she can't maintain bouyancy. I posted a video recently on Instagram, and someone on there told me that it is more than likely that her swim bladder has deflated and that it's not a fixable thing. Try also mentioned someone here who had a fish named "Googles" that had the same problem as my Mügles, and that I should see about getting in touch with them for long term care if I decide I don't want to euthanize her. Honestly she's my gateway fish, so I want that to be the very last resort. She seems to be doing alright in the bottom of the 10g quarantine I have her in. I think I'll stop the metro at this point. I skipped the salt dip for the first time in 5 days last night and there is barely any poop to siphon out compared to a bunch from the days she had the salt dips... Not sure what this means, but she's been eating Repashy lately, too, so that's something. Tap kh - 50 Tap GH - 70 QT tank kh - 110 QT tank GH - 160 Other tests are good. If anyone knows who the owner of "Googles" is, please point them my way? Thanks!!!
  15. Alright, I'll have hubs grab some equilibrium when he's at the LFS. She's much more active this morning, and she ate all three of her peas in short order, which is much more normal for her. She's got her own theme song and it involves the words, "such a hungry fish"... LoL
  16. Awesome. Well, our LFS closes early and Petco only had the strip test (surprise! /sarcasm), but I figured a general idea was better than nothing. I had already added enough for a 50 point bump, and the GH read about 75, and the kh read between 40 and 80, but closer to 80. Hubs has time after class tomorrow to hit the LFS for a liquid test so we can be more accurate. Tap water is just about the same GH, but the kh is way lower, between 0 and 40, maybe about halfway in between unless I'm slightly colorblind... Salt dip done, next dose of metro in, pH has gone up slightly, about 7, maybe 7.2. We'll see how things are in the morning. Thanks again for your continued help!!
  17. Alright, I'll get to work and report back with results. Should I hold off on the salt treatment if I'm messing with water quality?
  18. I have a 20g QT running with a new oranda in it, and a~44g bowfront with a black moor, ryukin, and some plants in addition to the hospital tank she's in. Trying to get hubs to swing by the store for a kh test on his way home. He has the car and I'm on public transit... =\
  19. I read the thread and I have a ton of baking soda at home just waiting to help with this. Opinion, though? Should I remove water from the tank and slowly add the baking soda to that, then back to the tank, adding the total amount in parts? Should I spread it out over an hour or two? Days?
  20. Yeah, the pH here is crazy! I'll take a look at it, for sure! Should I do this with all my tanks since they aren't doing the same thing with the pH?
  21. There are some planted tank forums that show a range of 1-3 kh (I don't even know...) In the area. Is there a sticky I can read about baking soda, or would you mind giving me some advice?
  22. I don't recall the brand and I can't seem to find it online anywhere. I just got it about a week ago because the fizz tabs I was using weren't cutting it... My LFS likes seachem, so I'm assuming it's their Neutral regulator. My tap pH is really high, 8.6-8.8 and the pH was 6.8 in her tank when I measured it this morning. It keeps slipping down and I'm worried because I'm sure the fluctuations aren't helping in her possible recovery... Kh I'm not sure of - I couldn't find any information online when I looked for my city information, but my zip code is 94116 - San Francisco... =\
  23. Weird... I am using a pH stabilizer on all three of my tanks. Hers is the only one that keeps dropping. The metro, pH stabilizer, a little bit of aquarium salt, just floss in the filter, and two stalks of anacharis are all that's in there with her... And the stabilizer is supposed to sustain a 7.0 pH for some time, but it's not and I don't understand why.
  24. Guys, does metro lower the pH in the water? It keeps crashing no matter what I do...???? So confused!!!
  25. Thanks Dalya. I hope she pulls through. She's so stubborn and extremely hearty. She's been through my entire learning process, and I've made a lot of mistakes! Cindi, I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with SBD. It's terrible that we've bred them in such a way as to cause it - we are hurting ourselves, too! I hope your finbaby makes a full recovery. Lisa - thanks, I hope I've done everything possible. Before I go ahead with the salt treatment, I have to ask - can it be combined with the Metronidazole? I read somewhere that it's not good to use them together, is that correct? I want tostart the dips tomorrow, but I want to make sure I'm not going to make matters worse. Thank you!!
