  1. My entire tank is solely anubia varieties for ther exact reason. :)

What is the grain size of your sand ? I'm thinking about switching to JBL Sansibar Black instead of Onyx Sand, but the grain size is 0.2 to 0.5mm

will it get sucked into my canister filter and damage it ?

  2. 6.2 is waaay too low. Your KH is probably low also. You'll want to buffer it for sure. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is an easy, inexpensive way to do it.

My sand is soft. It's Tahitian Moon Sand. I don't think sharp sand is a good idea. They forage a lot and if any of them end up bottom sitting or being a sinker because of some sort of swim bladder disorder, sharp wouldn't be good.

After some sleepless night lol, I found some report about the Onyx Sand being sharp so I took a look at the micro picture of this type of sand and it is actually sharp. Eeeeeh no more onyx sand. BTW I think the Tahiti Moon Sand that u are using has its grain size ranges from 0.1mm to 0.3mm right ? My white sand ranges from 1 to 3mm, I bought it 2 months ago at my local fish shop, I think mine is not fine sand.

  3. http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/116790-can-you-spot-the-differences/

Here is a thread I did a while back. :)

You want a pH of at least 7. GF do well in pH up to the low 8s. For GH and KH you want a minimum of 100. :)

According to this they prefer hard water right ?

Beautiful tank that u have, any black fish would be a ninja :teehee.

Is your sand soft, because the seachem onyx sand is said to be sharp which I think can scratch my fish and the glass.

  4. My fantail surface gulps which is his way of begging for more....attention.....which for him equals more food. He has taught one other fish to do it. He doesn't do it when I'm not around - I spy on my fish. :)

Mine goldfish do the same things but I don't know if this can cause SBD because whenever they see me they would come to the surface and gulp a lot, or when they see me holding the goldfish food can.

I don't think it would CAUSE swim bladder disorder, although my fantail is, how do I put it nicely, buoyant. (He is a fat little egg!)

How long do you soak the pellets before feeding ? I make them sink with a syringe and soak them for 1 min because we don't have sinking pellets here in Viet Nam. I don't know if 1 min is enough or not.

  5. This is my struggle right now too (the black sand). I do like the look, but having a black fish as I do, I kind of wish I had gone with the white. Trust your gut, if you think it might be too dark for your liking, you could be right. :)

Ya, I worry about ot because I saw a video on youtube about a tank with black background and sand, and the black moor completely disppears in the tank if you don't use white light.

Hi. Looks great. I was wondering though why you have the bubble wand at the top?

Actually, I dod it because I don't want the bubble to disturb my view of the fish, I'm using canister folter so I cannot put the airline tubing into it like some of our fellows did with the sump, but goldfish need lots of oxygen so I attached the bubble wand to the top of the tank to make it less disturbing.

    Gotcha thank you.

If I have a sump I would but the airline in there and get it out of my main tank, although I have my filter outlet flows at the surface I think it might not agitate the surface enough for those big fat chubby fish :teehee

  6. I have a black background and black sand. :idont. I like it. If you have any black fish they would be hard to see. :teehee

Can u post some pictures of your tank, I'm looking for it in the photo section but can't seem to find it. BTW I read some reviews about the Seachem Onix Sand and it is said to buffer the water and the grain is a little bit sharp, do you know about the standard pH, KH and GH for goldfish ? Is it good if the grain is a little bit sharp because some guys use it in his tank with corydoras claimed that it causes the loss of barbels and death for cory.

  7. They're marimo balls. :D

    And thank you! :hug

I'm so jealous that you can keep marimo moss in your tank! They are so cool looking!

Your fishies find them delicious? :ehh

They are basically Jack snacks! :) Jack the oranda eats them until he gets a tummy ache, so I had to take them out and put them into the refugium.

Wow it is good that u can grow plants, my goldfish treat everything as snack. I'm planning to try anubias next time foe my tank.

  9. Against a black background it may be a bit much, but with some greenery it could work. If you have any black fish they will disappear. According to the product information the buffering capacity isn't too drastic. It's certainly not as 'bad' as some of the aquatic soils and their softening prowess.

Good luck deciding! Hopefully someone will have used it on the site and can advise further. :)

I'm reading articles about the Onyx Sand and it is said to buffer the water a little bit so can you tell me a bit about suitable pH,KH and GH for goldfish. Because I google about it but there are many unreliable source.

  10. Wow it looks pretty cool. :)

Do u have sand or substrate with dark color in ur tank ?
My sand is bright white and reflects even more white from my lighting. :teehee

The kitty toy on the left and the hat on the right in front of the filters were because I had lost the little parts that hold the filter away from the wall. I've since found them...and the girls have grown too. :rofl

You have beautiful tanks, are they an common and a ryukin. Also what is the small ball on the left at the front of the tank ?

Mine is the same, but I'm thinking about something else :teehee and the Seachem Onyx Sand also acts as fertilizer for plants.

  12. Thank you.

So if I were to use black background and grey sand I cannot keep black ranchu or black moor right ?

You can keep whatever fish you want. Don't let aesthetics change your opinions! :hug

Thank you, I worry about it because my tank would be darker and black fish like moor might not show well with the black background. What do you think ?
