  2. Yes. i live in Balham which is in the south but pretty close to the centre. I will give them a call tomorrow but here is what their website says. mgl CaCO3 (ppm) Degrees Clarke Degrees German(DH) Degrees French Detergent rating Fluoride(ppm) WANDSWORTH EAST 267.6666667 18.73666667 14.98933333 26.76666667 HARD 0.141888889 I don't quite understand what it means lol. But maybe you do. Sorry that came out scrambled http://secure.thameswater.co.uk/dynamic/cps/rde/xchg/corp/hs.xsl/899_5787.htm
  3. I recently adopted Pascal and Eduardo from my college who left to spain. she has had them for just over a year. And kept them in a fishbowl :/ I am pretty sure Pascal is a common but not so sure about Eduardo? Might he be a comet? he is slimmer and shape and has a longer and more split tail. But I have noticed that Pascal sometimes bullies him and eats most of the food. So maybe Eduardo just hasn't grown as much. I was also wondering whether their year in the bowl might have stunted them? They seem very small for their age. Eduardo is no bigger than 2 inches and Pascal maybe 3 at the most. Will they still grow? if hey are stunted will this affect their left expectancy? Pascal and Eduardo Pascal Eduardo
  4. At the moment I have bioballs and ceramic rings as well as the activated carbon in the filter. it all came with it. I might replace the activated carbon with the Nitra Zorb then. how often should I change the water. I am testing it daily. I hope CindiL that you are right and the black tips are a sign of healing and not the opposite. I will keep a close watch then? And do regular water changes.
  5. In the uk unfortunately water regulations aren't as tight s in the USA. Nitrates are tolerated up to 50ppm I think. Since my test jumps from 40ppm to 80ppm I'm not sure what the exact value is, but i assume 50. I'll order the KH and GH test. I have already ordered the Nitra Zorb that Hidr suggested. Is that what you mean with a nitrate filter dnalex? I hope my tank will start cycling soon? How often should I do waterchanges?
  6. Oops. just noticed the mistake in my original post. Definitely not 25 but 0.25. How do it test the KH. i assume there is another test kit that I should have? Sorry really new to this
  7. Wow he was all white to start off! He is really pretty. Such a handsome boy Sent from my HTC One mini using Tapatalk
  8. Right. Just ordered the Nitra Zorb and Aquarium salt. Do I need to remove the activated carbon from my filter?
  9. The tap contains 0.25 ppm at least. But not more than 0.5 ppm But I tested my tank and the ammonia reads clearly as 0.
  10. My ammonia reads at 0 ppm though. He was exposed to high levels in the fishbowl I think. It climbed from 0.25 to 0.5 - 1 ppm in one day. And I immediately changed the water. I hope if I sort out the nitrates he will be better. My cycle hasn't even started yet
  11. Yes sorry. i saw that after I read it here. I'll order it tonight and then hopefully it will help. Thanks for the advice
  12. Hidr. Yes I can order it over amazon. I will do that. Thanks for the advice. Do you think the black edges might be caused by the high nitrates. I have been watching the tank for a little longer now. And it seems Eduardo is hiding more than he was before. I gave them the plants for that purpose but yesterday he was swimming around happily. Now he is constantly behind the plants. Is this a symptom?
  13. Motherredcap: Yes it's amquel plus. Is this the right thing to put in? I am completely new to it. Hidr: There is no way I can reduce the nitrate with water changes alone and I heard that plants only consume 5ppm of nitrates. So I might try what you are suggesting. I put it in my external filter right?
  14. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 ppm * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 ppm * Nitrate level(Tank) 40 - 80 ppm (same level as tap water) * Ammonia Level(Tap) 25 ppm * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 ppm * Nitrate level(Tap) 40 - 80 ppm * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) ph of 8.0 - 8.2 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) ph of 7.4 to 7.6 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API Freshwater drops * Water temperature? 17 * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 30 gal (Started the tank on Thursday. Fishin Cycle. Fish have been in since Friday. Goldfish were in a bowl before, inherited from a college for a whole year) * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? All Pond Solutions 1000EF. 1000L/H * How often do you change the water and how much? Was going to change tonight. * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? Just started the tank with the fish. was going to do a 25% water change tonight * How many fish in the tank and their size? 2. About 2 inches. * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Amquel and Nutrafin Cycle * What do you feed your fish and how often? Saki Hikari fancy Goldfish. twice daily in small amounts * Any new fish added to the tank? No. But a java fern which I sterilized with bleach and then placed in amquel. * Any medications added to the tank? Nutrafin Cycle * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Nutafin cycle on Thursday and Saturday. Amquel on Thursday. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Black tips on the fins of Eduardo. Pascal seems t be fine. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, Eduardo seems to not be eating much. i have changed them from flakes which they had in the fishbowl to sinking pellets and thought he might not like them. But now with the black tips to the fins :/ So here are my questions: - My tap water contains a high amount of nitrates and ammonia. By doing water changes I am therfore not reducing the nitrate levels by much. is there anyway I can remove the nitrate from the water. I have added amquel which says it binds ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. I am also planning to put plants in to consume the nitrates. So far i have only been able to precure 1 java fern. - The ph of my tap water is 7.4 to .6 In my tank it seems to be higher. Yesterday evening it read as 7.8 to 8.0. Tonight it seems more like 8.2 I am worried about the climbing pH. what can i do? I have activated carbon in my filter and have added amquel to the tank. -I am worried that the PH or the nitrates are affecting my smaller Goldfish. he seems to have developed black tips on his fins. i took photos this morning and posted them in my blog. the fins looked normal. Suddenly tonight the edges are black.
  15. Here are some pictures. Sorry for the blurriness. He swims pretty fast.

But I have tested the water every night and morning and it was at 0. what else could this be. he hasn't been eating much since I put him in the new tank.
  17. Sorry. That was a mistake. Just reading through the thread. I hope your fish will get better soon. Sounds like you are doing a great job anheat. And everyone on here seems to be very helpful. Best of luck Sent from my HTC One mini using Tapatalk
