    * * What do you feed your fish and how often? - NLS twice daily, blood worms once to twice a week, blanched spinach when I have it.

    * * Any new fish added to the tank? - no

    * * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank.Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. - One does of Prazi a couple months ago.

    * * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? - There is a growth which appears to be protruding through the scales above fish left gill plate. Growth is smooth, slightly whiter orange hue than fish.

    * * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? - all activity and appetite normal.

  2. Thanks! Let's see if we can get it all together as a functioning system. Fingers crossed.

    I had a basic, very very very basic, understanding of electronics from way back. What we have here was partially following some vague directions on this blog, research, and trial and error (fried board and a few fried transistors).

    The biggest hurdle was figuring out 1) how to properly use the transistor, 2) how to make the transistor turn off after doing what we wanted.

    The blog had a schematic to follow but it didn't make complete sense and we were modifying it slightly (using an alternate source for 5V power).

  3. Planted tank project is brewing. My roommate found a DIY arduino controlled dosing system online. He wants to install it on the 100 gallon saltwater tank because he has like seven bottles of stuff to dose. Anyway, he figured I'd want to make one too, and I'm a little better with electronics hardware and he is light-years better than me on the programming side.

    Well the schematics the tutorial gave wouldn't work on our test circuit. So I figured it out. This is just one pump.

    When it's done, a script on the arduino will control the dosing automatically. Once we get through all the bugs I'll post a write up in the DIY section. Here's the test phase and the arduino hidden under a breakout board.

  4. The setup looks awesome, but I'm a little worried that the top rim is removed. They usually put the top rim on for stability and it plays a large part in holding the tank together. Its such a nice tank, and I don't want you to end up with 100 gallons of fish and water on the floor .

    I believe that this is actually a fairly common DIY project that people do as long as the center brace is not a part of the rim. As shown in the pictures, the center brace is connected to the glass itself and is still intact. Buying a rimless tank is more expensive then buying a used on with a rim and taking it off. The center brace keeps it from bowing ever so slightly which would cause stress of the silicon seals. If were connected to the rim I would be super worried for sure!

    So I would say he's safe because the structure of the tank is sound and the rim on this seems to have been purely for aesthetics :) but I could be wrong. It's a good point to put out there.

    Basically what you explained. The trim was glued to the rim, but it wasn't even connected to each other at the corners. The tank was in poor shape when we bought it, so one of the trim pieces nearly fell off with a slight upward pull. So we peeled off the trim and cleaned the excess silicone. We revealed the tank, water tested it, and it's been going for a month. But if there is a stress point somewhere, hopefully we get a sign of a leak first before the whole thing burst. That'd suck!
  5. I have two shubunkins and they are doing very well. As the plants grow I identify the ones that aren't competing well and pull them out, in an attempt to make the tank more swimmable. I cut some tunnels behind this crypt for them to swim through, and that little crypt on the left in the corner was pulled out.

    They fancy one particular sword that they chew to bits. The other couldn't handle the nipping so I pulled it out too.

    They spend most of their time rummaging around the base of the plants, but I'm growing concerned about the gravel. Debating upgrading and relocating the tank to a different wall, switch to sand, with a less dense plant environment.

    I understand your reasoning, but it would be heartbreaking to tear down this beautiful tank! :o

    Btw, I recently ordered some plants, and your crypt inspired me to try some new plants. :)

    Sweet! I like the texture and color of the leaves on this plant. You should have no issues growing a range a crypts. They melt a little, but just pay attention to new growth, don't fret about the old leaves that may not look too hot lol. Can wait to see some picks of your new plants.

  7. Ok, so the tank has been cycling for what I think is a month but my roommate thinks it's been more like two. So here's the situation. We seeded the tank with some live rock from the old tank. We dosed ammonia. After a month of testing and adding ammonia we are getting some odd readings. It looks like nitrites are cycling out the system faster than the ammonia. When we dose the tank to 1ppm ammonia, the tank cycles down to .25 ppm ammonia and 0 nitrites. We've don't two wc to kind of reset the tank. Could something be inhibiting the ammonia eating bb?

I had planned on drilling all the tanks but the wife put up strong opposition to such a thing. I have an old old old tank that I might just drill to show it's not impossible and maybe change her mind.

    We drilled our 100 gallon no problem. Go slow and have an assistant pour water on the drill spot to cool it. Go slow or you'll get chips near the end of the cut, but nothing that will harm the integrity, just makes nasty cuts. Good luck.

    I do that everyday. Or at least I try. I'll take my coffee or tea in front of tank. I wrote part of my master's thesis in front of it lol. I would say it's nice to watch them swim, but they just beg incessantly. [emoji1]
  11. What size tank are you working with?

    This is a 47 gallon breeder. When I was planning this tank, I was expecting fancies and less plants. Then more plants happened. The shubunkins have the skill to navigate the tank, but I would have went for a four foot tank at this volume.
  12. That is so beautiful! I especially love your crypt, and I'm not even a big fan of crypts! Most are too sparse-looking to me, but yours is very full and gorgeous! :)

    Thanks everybody! Yeah it took like six months for tj e crypts to fill in like that. The big one had room to spread like that, the others I planted to close to the glass or were shaded by the swords. I'm battling GSA... hair algae has been handled but the GSA won't leave me be.
  13. Hey all, today is my water change day and decided to trim the plants. They were/are unruly. I took some pics of what I try to do when I trim plants. The tank is heavily planted and I have two Shubies in there. To maximize fun, I try to cut little swim tunnels between plants that they can explore.

  14. When the glow from your many fish tanks is enough light to read by at night

    You just "Peek" at websites that sell fish and you tell yourself "I am just going to take a quick look"

    You feel like a Goldfish Hoarder with all of your wall to wall tanks

    Your friends and family say they feel like they are in a pet store when they come to visit your home

    Your entire memory card in your camera is all pictures of your fish and you can't bear to delete any of them

    If I had a basement or extra room I'd have so many tanks lol

    When you brag about how your fish teach other bad habits

    When you look forward to water change day like it's spring cleaning

    When most of your close friends have had a lecture on the nitrogen cycle and bb

    When you explain to people that your filter media is a highly valued item in your home. (I'd give away my TV before I lose any established media!)

  16. Without knowing much about your water, substrate, and fertilization method, I'd say the light you have is insufficient for even low light at .06 watts. LEDs don't need to be high wattage to be effective for growing plants but I doubt that light is sufficient for growing dwarf hairgrass. Somebody more knowledgeable about led lights will chime in soon I'm sure. But I think a light upgrade is in the works. I use dry fertilizers in my tank, potassium sulfate, monopotasium phosphate, and Potassium nitrate, but stopped dosing the latter because my bioload took care of my need for nitrates. I also dose a trace element called Plantex CSM+B. All can be purchased at Greenleafaquariums.com. But I have high light and pressurized CO2. Additionally, your water is pretty soft, so you might want to look into a product called Seachem Equilibrium. It will help raise the mineral content of your water and raise GH.

    I would suggests doing some research on different planted tank setups. Since you don't want to do pressurized or DIY co2, look into what's called low tech planted tanks with or without excel supplementation. If you dose excel and you can have higher lighting and some ferts, no excel, you want low to medium light to prevent algae and little to no ferts. Even with research you'll have questions. There are a few experienced planted tank folks here that are very helpful as you move along in your tank build.

    It looks like people are growing low light plants with that light.
