  1. I'm getting a 50 gallon long tank 48 L X 12 W X 20 H. I have 1 fish in a 15 Gallon. i had her in a 55 but it was a tall one and I heard they are not good for fancies due to their swim bladders. I need to know what type and size filters I will need. I have various sizes I have a 30, 50, & 110 HOB and also a Fluval 460 that I've never used yet. Also heaters/size/type? Bubble wands how many? The one fish I have now has a weird floaty issue ( I posted in another forum about it). She does not deal well with heavy currents well. I had to cut back on the filter size to give her a fairly still current and just do more frequent water changes. Can I add more fish and how many ? Any suggestions to make the transition smooth? I know she will enjoy her new home as she is having issues turning in the tiny 15 she is in now that she's grown so much. Thanks in advance.
  2. I've decided to try snails for my diatom issue. I've never had to deal with this. What kind do I get? How many will i need ? What size should they be so they won't get slurped up by the fish? I will be moving my one fish to a 50 gallon tank from her 15 gallon. Using the media from the old tank I'm sure will just start the process all over again. Do the snails clear up the problem permanently and what do you do with them if they do clear it out.? Do they move on to eat your plants or what? Do you move them to a tank of their own and keep feeding them or can they stay?
  3. FINALLY!!!! People who have the same issue I have. Callie does the same exact thing. I got so tired of people suggesting this and that like I was doing the wrong things and I have tried everything short of tying a string on her to keep her underwater! Water changes, sinking pellets, peas. Even bought a more shallow tank for her. She loved hanging out in the plastic cave decoration but I worried about the quality of the water inside the cave being bad and she had got too big to be safe with her long tail frills. So she now positions herself under a length of tubing for the bubble wand when she wants a rest and I added 2 live plants that she can wedge between.
  4. How long do fancy goldfish live on average? Has anyone ever given up on keeping goldfish and switched to tropicals or other types of fishkeeping? Which is more work in everyone's opinions?
  5. Weekly water changes 50% or more if it's gunky. Vacuum the bare bottom most of the poo floats so I kind of dip it out daily. Rinse the filters in the tank water. I was wondering if I should use some Amquel or an ammonia filter for the Aqua clear instead?
  6. My ammonia readings keep going up and up in my tank despite water changes. Also doesn't look as clear as it once did. Tested the tap water...way higher than normal. My one fish seems fine (swimming and eating normally) had some redness of the tail last week but that's nearly gone. Should I add anything to try to bring the ammonia down? Using just prime with water changes so far.It doesn't seem to be helping much though. The ammonia reading is fluctuating between 0.50 ppm and 4.0 ppm. The tap water ammonia is somewhere between 1.0 and 2.0. Nitrites are 0 and Nitrates are 20 ppm. Using the API tests. 1 fish in 35 gal tank. No new food, plants, nothing. Don't know what has caused this change other than the higher readings in the tap. The water company usually does their additives in Apr.-May and send out a notice. This soo frustrating!
  7. No, the media from the 70 went into the 110 and I added more white pad and bio tubes to fill the 110. I could run the 110 and add the 70 and cannister until the water establishes right ? Meaning I could run all three and then drop the 110 later on. Then replace the glass cover and light canopy later once everything stabilizes. Could i add some live bacteria to help things along or is it just a waste of time/money?
  8. I think I'll go with the 70 Aquaclear HOB it fits better inside the canopy thingie- the 110 is tight and vibrates like crazy making a horrible racket. Plus the cannister. The tap water is actually a little better pH than the tank/treated water and I've got plenty of Prime; brand new bottle. My ammonia has still been running a bit high in the smaller tank so I'm thinking it could actually be a plus moving to the larger one? Also, thinking of getting some plants. Should I wait a bit until I know everything has gone okay or is it okay to do plants right away? Would it freak her out too much to add plants? I thought it might give her some places to hang out and not feel so alone. Bare bottoms are kind of boring now that she's by herself. Any suggestions on a type of plant she won't gobble up? Gosh, I'm a nervous Nellie!
  9. Should I try to move as much water from the smaller tank as possible to the larger tank? The cannister is a Fluval 306 model for 70 gal/300L. If I get funky water readings how soon should I do a water change after moving her or will that mess up the cycle I have already too much?
  10. When we moved we just put Callie in the smaller 30 gal. since her tankmates died off. It was just the quickest and easiest thing to do at the time she was already stressed. That was back at the end of March. I think I want to move her back to the 55 gal. She has some trouble making a turn in the smaller tank with her huge long tail and winds up going on her side especially when she goes into feeding frenzy. I don't want her to hurt herself since she is my last fish. She's a good 5-6" long from end to end. Right now she has a 30 gal, no stones (bare bottom), 110 AC HOB and a bubble hose along the back bottom. We had the 110 plus a 70 on the 55 before but it doesn't fit well with the cover and light section and makes so much noise even with a full tank. I have a new cannister system that I have never used.We bought it for the 55 because of the noise of the HOB's. I have a few questions about starting over. 1) Is the cannister enough or should I also use a small HOB with it for 1 fish? 2) If I add another fish what about filtration? 3) Other than cleaning the old tank squeaky clean what else should I do? 4) I'm assuming you have to get the tank to cycle before adding her back. How do I get the tank to cycle with no one in it and how long does it take? 5) Can someone give me a step by step so I don't mess this up and Kill her? Thanks.
  11. Hi guys, I'm back. Been doing water changes like crazy. Double dosing the tank water with the Prime. The ammonia is still up to 2.0 ppm but that's better than the 8.0. Had something go weird on Sunday the Nitrite jumped to 0.25 now it's back down to 0 tonight. The Nitrates have been holding between 20 and 40 ppm. Anyone have any ideas of what could be going on? Fish is eating and swimming normally it seems. The redness in the tail veins comes and goes and doesn't appear to be getting worse or affecting her. She still gets mad when I disturb her home with all the water changes. Anybody got any more ideas I could try?
  12. Thanks everyone; will keep you posted. Found my Prime and another test kit ( Seachem). Going to check with the other ammonia test to see if it's the chemicals. Then do a water change. Fish seems fine. Eating and swimming. Gobbled up a pea last night. Just seems to be lonely. Keeps banging the thermometer for someone to wave to her. We cant even watch a movie without her getting our attention!
  13. Yes. It has been like this since Monday and I'm not sure when it starting getting into those numbers. I usually check weekly. Today (Thurs) it's come down to 4.0. It's so weird. I've never had it go that high before. Usually my issues are the nitrites & nitrates, I can usually get the ammonia to come down with many water changes.

If so, what kind and how deep is it? bare bottom tank I have high ammonia and high Nitrates. Not sure if it's the new water. I brought Callie over in water from our old house and have been adding treated tap water from new address with the water changes. Which I've done about 3 times. The last one being a 50% change: I freaked when I saw the deep forest Green reading on the ammonia. Never seen it that color before!!! I did notice the tap seems high in ammonia. Also, the water company does their "flush" thing in April/May but I usually get a notice-maybe there's residual chemicals still in the tap from that? Could my bacterial buddies have died in the move? I kept the pellets in the filter with water from the tank. Should I do more water changes or is it making things worse? Anything else I can do? I have those ammonia pellets from AquaClear that you add to the filtering system would they help?
  15. I am down to 1 fish. A calico fantail. We have had her about 3 years now. We started with 3 and she's the last survivor. She seems lonely to me and bored. Only time she seems perky is feeding time. Her best bud was a black moor. They swam together, ate together, slept next to each other. Wondering about getting another. If I do; should I try to get one close to the same size, a little smaller or get another type? Her buddy was bought at the same time from the same tank. Another was from a different tank-a comet-and it bullied both the calico and the moor. I'm scared about the personalities clashing, disease, stress possibly killing the remaining fish I have. Should I leave well enough alone? Not sure what to do. How do you guys handle this?
