  1. This is a great topic you thought of. As I'm reading these I'm laughing at so many of them because they are so true. hahaha It's hilarious. These comments would make a great little fish book for the coffee table. Another reason for family and friends to think were fish crazy. :)

I would love these things in a little book! With beautiful high res images of different varieties of goldfish!

I have to say I'm enjoying this thread too! It's making me feel far less like a crazy goldfish lady. If we all do these crazy things, then they aren't actually crazy, they are normal right? right? :idont

  2. When your nightmares are about flukes. Or bacterial cysts. Or the goldies somehow jumping out of the tank and getting beached on the floor (even though I have a very secure hood, I have still dreamed this before! And had to get up in the middle of the night to check they are all still in the tank!)

  3. When you realize you spent over a grand to care for that 50 cent fish you got and now contemplate buying a $200 gold fish when before a $20 one sounded outrageous. Lol

Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

Yes I added up how much my setup is worth the other day, and it was SCARY :yikes

One of my fish was a freebie from the lfs, one was a 'feeder' for $1, and the other two were $5-10 dollars each. But to me they are priceless.

There's that moment when you're trying to fall asleep and you have to get up and throw a bucket of water into your tank because the filter return is splashing just a little too loud.

    OMG this!

Your dreams have goldfish in them somewhere, or you dream that you are doing water changes in your dreams :fishtank

    Yep!!

When you walk into the petstore and make a B line to the goldfish area

I actually avoid the fish section at the petstore becasue a) that leads to me spending heaps of money and b) I find it really sad because the goldies usually look so unhealthy :(

  4. When you spend your entire paycheck on goldfish things while other girls your age are buying yoga pants.

hahaha I have to admit I want both the yoga pants and the goldfish things. Maybe my goldies will have to start earning their keep!

When you're watching tv and you see a goldfish in a bowl, and go on to rant and rave about how goldfish don't belong in bowls

At least these kind of rants end up educating people! I think they are valuable!

When you and your partner's idea of a date is the local fish store.

When you are on a first name basis with the local fish store owners.

When you are trying to explain homemade goldfish food to your mother, and why it will be in the freezer.

The phrase "Sorry, I had to go make sure the fish didn't pass out in the salt bath"

When your partner says, "Don't you have another tank? We *could* get him."

You're lucky to have such a supportive partner! Or perhaps unlucky to have someone enabling your addiction :teehee

  5. When I walk into the pet store and the workers say "Hi! How's your fish and tank going?"

When my friends are starting to learn who all my fish are, even without seeing them regularly

When my friends star tasking me how my fish are.

When I'm plunging my arm into freezing water in the middle of winter :P.

When I find myself talking about different breeds of goldfish as if everyone knows what they are

When I get really angry and decide I don't like someone basically because of their goldfish (or how they keep them)

When Ebay automatically suggests goldfish Items for me to buy

When I've spent more on my fish than I have on my dogs and cats

OH yes the "water change day" one. I can't make plans when I need to do water changes!

And the being upset because the fish is sick.

And talking to my friends about treatment plans for sick fish

When I wake up thinking i hear water running and can't go back to sleep until I've checked my tank hasn't sprung a leak

And finally all my friends telling me i should open an aquarium store!

Haha wow i definitely feel you on some of those things. Whenever i'm mulling over what to do about my fish, my partner says "Why don't you ask Koko?"

when you run around screaming to everyone DON'T BUY GOLDFISH!~ repeatedly!

And yet here we all are lol :nana

When your cat recognizes the routine you go through on water change day, because she likes to chase the poo as it moves through the python hose. WC day is my kitten's FAVORITE day....and I'm just setting up for one now :nana

How cute are cats about the fish! My cat is the same! I have to stay very close to the tank when the hood is up for a water change, otherwise she tries to go fishing! :aint:

  6. Yesterday it burst and stringy cottony pieces of gunk came off it so I did a 50% water change and salted to 0.1%

I'm pleased to report it looks much less hideous now - the lump is much much smaller.

I'm going to do another water change today, should I leave the salt at 0.1% or raise it towards 0.3%??

  7. When your partner can't find common household utensils (scissors, string, elastics, spoons, sand paper, Tupperware, freezer bags, measuring cups, razor blades, tweezers, tongs etc...) and your response is "check the fish shelves".

When half the baggies and containers in your freezer are labeled "For fish/NOT people"

When every charge on your credit card has "aqua" in the business title

When your LFS calls you on stock day at closing, worried because they haven't seen you...

If you spend 10 mins on Google in the plant section at Walmart, trying to figure out if that neat plant can be aquatic (or worse, when you don't need google)

When your kid expects you to return with plants or a new fish every time you leave the house

If your children can differentiate between black moors and orandas

If your kids correct the petsmart employees

When you partner doesn't keep fish...but understands the nitrogen cycle

    Touche Amy!

    Your freezer contains:

    Bloodworms

    Peas

    Repashy

    1 Pizza

My freezer has it's own little fish section!

When the buckets around the house are labeled either "fish only" or "no fish."

When the most expensive light fixtures in the house are hanging over the fish tanks.

Lol labelling them is smart! Mine is more like red and blue buckets for fish, black buckest for laundry and household use. Which is apparently very confusing for my housemate :wall

When all of a sudden in the middle of the night you wake up to find a waterfall on the first floor because your filters outflow moved. (Actually happened)

That's horrible! I hope that never happens again! :yikes

You purchase more items on your credit card for the fish then for your own child. (sometimes a very sad, guilty, moment for a parent. :( )

Don't feel bad you have to spread your love (and money!) between all your babies - fishy and human alike!

  8. I'd like to know too, I could never get it from tastyworms, any food I ordered from their was seized by customs

i got all my repashy from chris... did you actually order repashy from him? i don't recall that product being a mention in the emails you sent me. other foods may contain different ingredients that are not permitted into AU.

that said, i am not sure that he is stocking the product anymore, head to his website to see what stock he has left if you're still interested, Linzi and Mandy. not one Repashy or PraziPro order sent by Chris to me in AU was stopped, even after Customs opened it, they forwarded it onto me.

I used to just order it from the website and I never had an issue. Now there is no option to ship to Australia.

I've seen it on Ebay and Amazon. Would either of those be an option?

Ebay perhaps, but Amazon has weird shipping to Australia. Most of their products don't give an Australian option even if listed for international delivery.

Supergreen is still available on TastyWorms. Chris mentioned a while a go that you have to contact him directly if you're not in the US. He changed his international shipping policy, and mentioned if things are seized he can no longer give refunds.

I might have to contact him directly then. It seems like we are running low on options! Will have to try ebay etc

  9. lol.. that cat is adorable :)

at one point in the video, where light was hitting on the fish from behind, i was able to see almost the complete sphere of the cyst.. so definitely, that's exactly how they form. it causing such a bump means that it is most likely to pop and ooze for a few days. it's not unusual to have more than one cyst, but more often there is just the one.

if you notice that there are more, just keep an eye out from top view as sometimes if they have multiple, they can actually begin to pinecone from the amount of bacteria.

    an example: http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/index.php?/topic/118367-strange-lumps-on-fantail/

once it bursts, if it is a huge wound, you may want to try and dab some betadine on the site to keep it sterile whilst it heals. you can get that from the pharmacy (not sure about Coles, but perhaps) if you don't have it already.

Yep how funny is Savvy, she loves all things fishy!

I can't believe it hasn't popped yet! It is growing at an alarming rate - the complete sphere you mentioned has come out from her body more. If it was a cartoon, people would be running away screaming "This thing is gonna blow!" :yikes

Some of her scales are sticking up, but I didn't recongise it as pineconing because they are only the ones directly on top of the lump. I thought they are just sticking up because they are supposed to lie flat on a flatish surface that is now very round. She has also lost scales from the lump.

I will try to catch her in my hands and take a better photo today. Will defs keep a close eye out for pineconing.

Should I salt the tank now or wait for that thing to blow?

  10. Colour has both genetic and environmental influences. The colour will vary from faded to vibrant depending on light exposure and diet, but the base colour and pattern are genetically determined. So I infer that a genetically orange goldfish kept in bad conditions would still change from the olive fry colour to orange, but the specific shade of orange would depend on the environmental conditions. But I'm not prepared to test my hypothesis, too unethical :(

  11. Great question, it has been so lovely reading through this thread!

I take a few moments every evening before bed to sit by the tank and just watch them live their little fishy lives. I go through stages of training them to do various things, but really I just love when they see me and swim up to the side of the tank all friendly and cute

  12. Has it gotten larger since you first posted? If so would you mind getting an updated picture?

I think it has grown, but it's hard to say. It looked huge when I first noticed it, but I think it may have grown. New video on the way. She's all set up in QT now, ready for it to burst ewww!

  13. QT is fine if you'd like :) it's generally not contagious, but she'll need to go to QT when it bursts anyway for salt so if you want to go ahead and move her now that's fine. And just a heads up that these sometimes come in multiples, so it's possible she'll develop more.

Good to know you have the Stakos pharmacy nearby just in case :)

I'm going to put her in QT tomorrow morning once the temperature evens out (super cold snap here!). Appreciate the heads up, it's always nice to be mentally prepared. It is growing at a scary pace! Hopefully it won't pop over night!

Sorry about your fish with having a lump/cyst on her. Hopefully it will resolve itself soon.

Thank you! It's pretty freaky to look at! But I'm glad she's otherwise ok, and that it shouldn't be too difficult to treat, fingers crossed.

  14. Welcome back! Congrats on the thesis! That's great [emoji4]

I'm on my phone so the video is a little small but from what I could tell I saw a small lump behind the gill on one side. This appears to be a bacterial cyst. There is not a whole lot to do at this point except wait for it to pop on it's own, after that we can salt the tank to ward off secondary infection.

Do you have any meds on hand? (I don't anticipate at this point that you will need them, but would like to know what you have handy just in case.)

Thank you! I'm quite proud! Although I definitely haven't had a life in a long time lol :teehee

That sounds like a good prognosis! I have salt, Prazi pro, and Pimafix. I also have Helen a couple of suburbs away, with her fully equipped pharmacy!

I've set up the QT tank I got on sale ages ago, should I put her in there or just leave her in the main tank? If it's bacterial would it be better to salt the main tank to kill anything lingering about? I will be able to do more frequent water changes if she's in the QT tank (it's a 9 gallon tank).

Welcome back!!!!! Hope your fish feels better.

Thanks Heidi! She doesn't even seem to notice what's going on! So that's a good sign!

  15. Hi everyone,

It has been ages since I've posted here! I wrote a thesis since we last spoke! I thought about you guys, but I haven't really had the time with everything happening in my life. And the fishy family have all just been happy and healthy, so all your previous advice has worked like a charm! They have all been with me for at least a year now!!! But I missed you all! Hope everyone's tank is happy and healthy too!!

A freaky lump appeared on Lipstick. It must have come up pretty quickly, because I only noticed it last night, and it is almost the size of a pea (and she's pretty small still). But it might have come up more slowly, because I have adopted Helen's "let fish be fish" philosophy, which has really reduced the fish related stress in my life. But I haven't been inspecting them as closely of late. The only thing I can think of that may have contributed is that I forgot to use Prime with my last water change. Thesis Brain hasn't quite left the building

But here is the form and a video, because she's far too zippy to photograph well! The lump is on her left hand side, just behind her gills, so you can see it from the front and when she faces the left of the screen. Excuse all the others trying to get their 15 seconds of fame!

I haven't seen anything like this before, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!
