  1. Im actually starting to wonder if it isnt swim bladder. Now he seems to have full control of his level in the tank but he is still just limbo with his tail up. Sometimes he rests at the top with his anus up as described before. He doesnt seem awefully floaty though at this point.
  2. Thank you. I am not sure what to do. He is totally anus up now. See image. He pretty much sits like this and then swims around digging at the gravel but then stops and starts floating again. I have been really light on food for him. I just gave him a small square of solient green last night. Not sure if I should feed more solient green or fast or switch to peas. UGH. Im so stressed.
  3. Does anyone think that the peas might soak up epsom salt so when you feed the fish the peas it could get some of the epsom at the same time?
  4. Swim bladder is a tricky topic ill tell ya! I'm having similar issues right now. I can tell you that when I was supposed to go away for a week one year on a cruise, my fish wasn't eating and wasn't even upright. I was thinking of cancelling my vacay to help him! I isolated him in the tank to rest by himself. This went on about a week. When I had given up hope and cried my eyes out, I woke up the morning of my cruise and he spontaneously came back to full speed!! I didnt get it but I was happy about it. Don't give up.. you just never know. I hope something works out for you. I myself am trying to figure out the same problem. Fingers crossed and prayers said.
  5. I will look back to your pH link. I cannot find maracyn for the life of me. Seems that the company stopped making it and just started back up again and no one has it. I even called some local pet shops who used to have it. Mardel did say they would send me a sample but they cant sell it to me.It will take a few days. I have maracyn 2 coming overnight tomorrow because that is often also hard to find. I did put one dose of maracyn in today. Unfortunately it might be a while before I get it to finish up the dosage. I did not use epsom salt. Not sure how that would react with the salt in the tank already. Have you ever used salt and epsom salt at the same time?
  6. Ive decided to start putting some Maracyn in the tank. I dont have enough Maracyn 2 to combine but I am going to see if I can pick up some. If it is a bacterial infection, I want to try to resolve it. Not sure what else I can do.
  7. I actually just thought i saw some poop coming out about 2 min ago but it must have been a small piece. from what I saw it looked green in color and not too stringy but again, it was only for a quick minute.
  8. Just API. I used to have a buffer that I added a year or so ago but I haven't had to use it. I might need to start that up again with the pH fluctuations. My fish seems worse today. more upside down then yesterday and almost partially belly up at times.
  9. What happend? I am having a similar issue right now. Curious to know if you resolved it.
  10. pH is only back to about 6.6 again even with a 1/3 water change so I guess Ill be changing more water today. I can take your suggestion of 1/2 water changes and see how that goes. The decholrinator is API water conditioner.
  11. Hi, Thank you both for the compliments. I have put a lot of hard work and money into these fish but it is all worth it. They are my babies. I have always kept salt in the tank as it is recommended by some for goldfish tanks to keep the slime coat of the fish moving and my fish have never had any problem with it. I dont feel comfortable at this point removing it as I dont believe it is the cause of any of the problems I am having and my fish are so used to it. I actually changed the tank on Saturday and cleaned the filters etc so I am surprised that I had a pH issue. The pH was around 6.6 on Saturday before the change which doesnt seem to bother them. I do try to keep it more basic but over 12 years you learn what bothers your fish and what they are ok with. I did a water change on Saturday to try to keep everything balanced but apparently it didnt work this time. I am definitely not concerned with the red streaks, I just thought that the information might be helpful in determing what is wrong with the fish that is having the floating problem. I dont have any ammonia issue which is usually the cause of these red streaks in this tank so I thought that was a bit odd. As for the floating fish, he has always had a bit of a swim bladder issue but this time is worse then others. There was one time about 5 years ago that was really bad. I fed him peas and at that point he started floating upside down on the bottom. I thought for sure he was going to die. So, this is why I am hesitant to feed peas again. I did start him on the sinking disc diet which is more plant and less of everything else and that had seemed to help. Now he is just not getting better. This began last Friday, I fasted him for several days but then gave him about 1 pellet broken into very small pieces. I fasted him several more days but no results. This is why I started a new plan of switching food but he just seems worse. Not sure what to do at this point. Im going to check the pH now.
  12. I just changed about 1/3 of the water and started feeding a small amount of solient green to see if that will help. Ill check pH again tomorrow.

Ill have to do another partial change. * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) - pH about 6.8 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API drops * Water temperature? approximately 70 degrees * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 75 gallon, upgraded around August/Sept. Kept one filter from original tank. * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Fluval Canister Filter 406 and Aquaclear 70. * How often do you change the water and how much? 1/4 every week or two * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 1, 1/4 of tank * How many fish in the tank and their size? 2, each about 8" including tail * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Salt (1/2 tsp per gallon for years) and dechlorinator. * What do you feed your fish and how often? Algae sinking pellets that I soak in water before giving to them. * Any new fish added to the tank? No, only these two fish in the tank together for about 12 years. * Any medications added to the tank? Started adding Maracyn in low dose yesterday * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. - I couldnt possibly list the history but low medication usage for past year with increased tank size. Typically only Mardel products like Maracyn or Maracyn 2. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Fish 1 - lump on top of tail (been there for years), Fish 2, lump on side back near back of belly buldge (been there for years). Some minor red streaks in tail past 2 days. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? - Fish 1 floating at the top tail up. Both have appetites. Fish 1 does occassionally have swim bladder issues but it hasn't been a problem for a while and not usually for over a week like this time.
  14. HI Everyone, My goldfish is at it again. Upgraded them to the 75 gallon with a Fluval canister filter and an off the back filter which should be more then enough. Have 2 goldfish in the tank. Water is clear, ammonia is 0ppm, pH is a little green (slightly acidic) but not in the yellow. Food is algae pellets that I soak so that they sink to the bottom. Temp is about 68-70 I would guess. All water tests out of faucet are normal. Substrate is gravel small enough that they would not choke on it. Only fake plants in tank. This goldfish has had this issue before which is why I started feeding a more plant based diet. Both goldfish are over 12 years old. I have been fasting my fish for a week (with about 1-2 pellets broken into small pieces for him about every 3 days to make sure he has some food in his system). Not sure what else to do. I am wondering if I should start medication like Maracyn because it seems to be a cure all for me back in the days where I was having a lot of trouble with my tank. 2nd goldfish without the issue has some red streaks in his tail which started today. Did tank change but water perameters were before change. Both fish have small tumors on their bodies which they have had for years and years. The one with the issue has it on top of his tail and I am wondering if that has something to do with this issue. Thoughts? Thanks!
  15. Thanks for your help! J, you were one of the people who helped me through some issues with my 29 gallon. Got the new tank about 1.5 months ago with the dream that the filter along with more water would work but no good. Right now I have green water so once I get it all cleared up I will definitely post pics for all the hard work of my koko goldfish family. The filter I have now is the 70 and I realize this just isnt going to cut it but I just hope that the right filter or filters clears up my green water and pH issues. Ammonia hasn't been bad actually for a change. Yesterday I tested it and it was clear of ammonia. Seems like I could deal with my 70 and add a 110 based on the info above. My issue currently is that the 70 is sticking out too far toward the glass top that I have so I can't properly close the top, I have to shift the glass forward a bit to make sure that it doesn't hit the top and overflow. Im concerned that the filter will overflow by accident so that is one reason I was considering a canister. Have you ever heard of this?
  16. Hi, I recently upgraded to a new 75G glass aquarium with stand. I also purchased one of those glass tops tat the light sits on and a cabinet stand for my goldfish. Here are some details: 75G Tank 2 large goldfish (approximately 8-9" each), one is 12 years old, the other about 10-11 years old. Current fiter is filter on my old 29G (Aquaclear HOB) which definitely needs upgrading and fast. I had no choice but to move the fish and the water along with the filter media into the new tank. I typically have green water and pH problems which I can assume are due to the filter size. I currently feed them one time per day and they eat only algae pellets due to a swim bladder illness in one of the two. Algae seems to keep him in good shape (knock on wood). I would like to get feedback on what the best filter would be for this situation. I seem to have trouble with the HOB because they do not seem to fit the tank very well. Not sure if this is due to the size of the filter but I kind of have to force it to sit in a certain way for it to work due to the thickness of the frame at the top of the tank. I am open to any suggestions particularly the type of filter to go for (canister, HOB etc) and brand that will work and last. Thanks!
  17. Thanks all for your help! My fish are now comfortably relaxing in their new 75g aquarium! I have not treated them for anything but they are both eating and looking good. I decided to keep salt in the tank since they are used to it. I may try solient green again now that they are in the new tank. Next task is to get plants and another filter. I kept my last filter but I don't think it will be enough since I'm reading you need about 10 times the gallon number for the gph. Looks like I need about 750gph to go through the filters. Anyway hopefully the cycle goes smooth or that will be the next thing I write about. Lol Oh and I decided on a real line wood stand. So far so good.
  18. HI Everyone, I got the solient green in the mail and tried to feed it to my goldfish but they wouldn't eat it. They would suck it up but then chew it for a bit and spit it out. I used Maracyn Two and the larger goldfish started eating and had been doing fine. However, now the smaller goldfish is breathing with his mouth opening more then usual and he is not eating. This has been going on for about a week now. He seems interested in the food but then picks it up and then spits it out. Any ideas of what this can be? No scratching but I did notice tiny small holes in the tail fin and have noticed very small white spots that look a little cottony looking. I am guessing that the cottony growth is first and then the hole goes where the white cottony spot was. Again, the holes are very small and it is not ick. Any idea of what this can be? I am actually ordering the 75Gallon tank tomorrow and it should be here by Wednesday so hopefully my water quality will be really good after that. In the meantime, I have been testing the water and doing water changes whenever needed. I have put some Maracyn in the tank but I dont see any change in my fishes breathing etc. It has only been 3 days. I can't keep the medicine in well because I have to keep doing water changes. Any ideas? Thanks!
  19. I finally got the solient green in the mail. Have them a mix of their current food and the new food. Smaller of the two (who has swim bladder issuers typically) ate both. But now he is sitting on the bottom which usually isn't good for him. The larger of the two who hasn't been eating much isn't eating solient green but did finally take down a few pieces of the old food. Strange. Someone mentioned feeding every other day to try to eliminate some waste so I might try that now.
