  1. Wow Lisa, thank you, that is so nice! I am in Olympia. Maybe we can work out a meet if necessary. I'm not sure if he will eat. I'm going to try a couple bits of his regular food since he didn't go for the peas earlier. Now I am seeing some fuzzy white on Brownie too, up near his dorsal fin and possibly by his nostrils. I think the body spot been there awhile, I just figured out it is not shiny like his scales. He's been doing a bit of color changing, getting more white on his belly and sides and I thought it was just that.
  2. Melafix was stopped after dose 7, on Tuesday. There was no bottom sitting or other behavior issues that I noticed during the first round of Prazi. I tried to feed Brownie a pea with Epsom salt and he didn't eat it. I even left a couple bits of pea in overnight and he didn't eat them. However, he is doing a lot more swimming around the tank and a lot less bottom sitting. He still sits some, but when I look over at the tank about half the time he is a least a couple inches of the bottom and sometimes he is swimming like normal. Would the Prazi make him bottom sit? Do fish pout? Blackie got peas yesterday also. Last night and this morning I noticed that when he rests he is floating very near the top of the tank instead of near the middle. He is not gasping or anything and swims around like normal when he isn't resting. But I did notice a worrisome white fuzzy things on Blackie's tail. I missed it before because it is on the inside/underneath (between the two tails) very near the peduncle. One fuzzy spot looks like it came off, but there is another. I added salt to each tank to .1% this morning. Thanks again for everyone's help. Other things in life have me really stressed out and overwhelmed so I am really really appreciating not having to figure this out all by myself. ❤
  3. Blackie's top view. Man, black fish are difficult to photograph!
  4. Thanks for the reassurance Bodoba, you definitely eased my mind. Hopefully when they are both back to feeling great they will get along. If not, my daughter (who the fish technically belong to) decided that it would be ok for Brownie to be rehomed to my aunts amazing ponds. Seriously, they are amazing. I want to live there and I'm not even a fish! So today is water change day after a second round of Prazi. There is currently no salt in either tank. I could easily add some if that would be good. Blackie is super happy in the 10 gallon QT. S/he still has a lump on chin but it has changed shape. The redness in that lump is gone. I'll try to get some good pictures soon. What looked like bilateral swelling from the lump down the jaw(?) toward the gills appears to have subsided a little bit. I'm really worried about Brownie though. He has been bottom sitting since the 15th when I put them both in QT. I thought maybe he was just pouting about lack of space and being in the plastic tub so Tuesday I did 100% water change on the main tank, added prazi, and put him back in the main tank. But he is still hiding and bottom sitting. No appetite. I fed him Wednesday morning and there are still a couple of pellets sitting on bottom uneaten. I have not fed him since. Maybe he is constipated? Maybe he hates the Prazi? Maybe there is something else going on? He is not clamping, though sometimes his tail and dorsal fins droop. No pineconing. I was thinking of trying to feed him peas today, maybe mashed up with some garlic. Is it too soon? I'm thinking of putting Blackie in the main tank and Brownie in the QT tank after water changes. If I switch them I would definitely 100% water change on the QT. Should I do 100% on the main tank or would less than that suffice? Would it be better to not switch them? I sure appreciate everyone's help and advice. This is the link to the video of them roughhousing the other day. I couldn't get the file size to shrink enough to load to photobucket. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/moygv0i5mhlzsgv/AAA7IUX-5l11qrexggK1cAiqa
  5. Thank you so much for your help and encouragement Amanda. Each fish is now in its own 10 gallon QT tank (best I could do for size). At about 2am last night I witnessed some major rough housing. Idk if it was bullying or spawning behavior. I really thought they were both boys. But Blackie was getting pretty beat up and shoved around hard and now has what looks like maybe blood in his (her?) right eye. Brownie got 50% water change and prazi. Blackie just got tank water and prazi. They will get their last dose of melafix today. I managed to catch a little of their run in on video. I can post a link later if it would be helpful. This is the first time I've ever seen behavior like that. I thought they were getting along. They've lived together for like 2 or 3 years. Now I'm wondering if they can go back in the big tank together ever. Should I worry that Brownie is mostly just sitting in the corner of his tub? It's got air and a filter. He was swimming around earlier and if I go over there he moves about. He's just more still than he was in the big tank.
  6. Thank you Amanda Before I do a water change I have a question about the melafix. Is Melafix cumulative? There has been 5 doses total (at 25 ml per dose) added to the tank. I can't imagine adding that much back in at once. I *think* it dissipates over the course of the day. And I *think* that adding more than 25ml at one time would be very bad. I just don't KNOW and was hoping for confirmation before I do anything else to mess things up. My fear is that I will start adding things and learn that Blackie needs antibiotics that can't be used with whatever is in there.
  7. I treated with prazi last year. 3 or 4 rounds I think I stopped prazi because...panic and a lack of clear thinking. I didn't want to mix any treatments just in case. I wanted to try the melafix because the fins were getting worse. The prazi bottle does say that one treatment should work. So I took a chance. Wasn't sure if doing a water change in the middle of the 7 days of melafix was a problem. I can certainly change water and start the second round of prazi today if that is the best way to go. That chin lump has me really worried. I figured I should just wait for an experienced opinion and stop guessing before I change water or add anything in case other meds are required.
  8. The bump on the chin is new, I just noticed it last night.
  9. There is currently Melafix and nothing else in the water.
  10. Thank you motherredcap. The fins may have just been starting to pale and fray. I started salt because I was worried about ich, because Blackie has a white spot on his tail. That white spot is still there but maybe smaller. I'm kind of wondering if it is just a mark that was aquired at the same time that he lost a chunk of tail. I was so stressed by other things in life at that point that my posts in the previous D&D thread seem really scatterbrained and chaotic to me now. I thought it a good idea to just start a new thread.
  11. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0-.25 * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank)10-20 * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) 0-5 (This is more normal. Last month there was a spike to 20 that resolved to 5 the next day) * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) ph-7.4 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) ph-7-7.2 (This is a little lower than what I have seen in the past) Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API drops * Water temperature? 71 * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 50 gallons since July 30 * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Marineland Penguin 350 with Biowheel and Marineland Penguin 200 with Biowheel . Modifed the filters last week. Removed carbon, replaced the filter floss. Added ceramic rings. * How often do you change the water and how much? Weekly or more since August 19. Not nearly enough before that. * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 4 days ago. Tuesday the 9th. 75% * How many fish in the tank and their size? 2 fish. Comet, Brownie, 7.5 inches including tail. Blackmoor, Blackie, 7 inches including tail. * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime * What do you feed your fish and how often? Omega One pellets, twice a day. Occasionally frozen bloodworms, frozen brine shrimp, peas, greenbeans. * Any new fish added to the tank? No * Any medications added to the tank? Yes-salt, prazipro, melafix * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. August 16 75% water change August 20 75% water change SALT: August 21 Began Salt. Raised to .3% over 3 days. August 29 75% water change, added salt to return to .3% Prazipro: Sept 5 75% water change, started round 1 of 7 day prazi schedule (salt should have been at .1% due to water change) Sept 6 added second dose of prazi Melafix: Sept 9 75% water change. Did not replace salt. Started dosing Melafix. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Strange lump (cyst?) under Blackies mouth. It looks a little white evenly on both sides from the lump toward his gills. His fins are fraying and losing color. There is a chunk missing from the bottom left lobe of his tail-possibly due to a wrestling match with the airstone. Brownies fins are fraying, there is 3 divets out of the bottom lobe of his tail. There may be red streaks in his tail. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? They seem to be acting mostly normal. When I started Melafix they both seemed to get more active with a bigger appetite. While it seems that cysts aren't uncommon in goldfish, could someone take a look at these pictures and tell me if something more might be going on? Is it ok to use Salt, Prazi, AND Melafix at the same time? I was going to switch to only melafix because I was unsure and the prazi didn't seem to be helping, but I am only 1 day late on the prazi 7 day schedule, I can continue that if it's a good idea. Salt is easy enough to add back in. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/ed74w1gpx12l0v6/AACsOSK8eazAEa_qcAkn0xSKa https://www.dropbox.com/sc/nx9vcfei0tv32y8/AAAjOpOJ1ePRFnDwPS15rFrva https://www.dropbox.com/sc/a1enpaefncl0g8a/AAC0Dqx28U0exa1Z1vt7c0aVa https://www.dropbox.com/sc/6biqkjee2u9c4y0/AAAJTufRxQvmMQoXXiesIMlVa https://www.dropbox.com/sc/4rqmy2tpvxer3gl/AABl60UN1xuEmowQ5fmE2Nf0a I can try to get Blackie out and take a better picture if I must. It kind of scares me though.
  12. His tail does not look to be ragged or fringed at any of the edges. It just looks like a chunk is missing out of the bottom lobe of his left tail fin, about 1/2-3/4 inches long parallel to the...Idk what they are called...veins? Moving toward his body. It's in a place where the bottom lobe of his fin on the other side naturally folds. Damage is on the same side as the white spot and what looks like a possibly missing scale. Do fish get scabs over wounds? As for the filter customizing, I'm thinking of using plastic canvas to build a holding structure to keep it off of the wheel. Or trying, again, to cut apart the cartridge and salvage the plastic scaffolding and attaching plain floss to that. It's been a long time since I read about this, but I thought it was recommended to avoid metal in fish tanks. So that would eliminate binder clips I think.
  13. Amanda, the filter floss I bought is similar our maybe even the same as what you show in your link. It didn't fall apart. I cut it to appx. 6" x 7" and it flexed or bowed in from the water flow, touching the biowheel and stopping the spin. This filter is older and a little bit finicky. If I don't have the cartridge in exactly right it also will stop spinning. But I think I have a few new ideas to try now. I decided to raise the salinity in the tank as a first step in treating the fish. It looks like salt will treat most of the problems it could be and at the very least won't likely interfere. It's at .1% last night. Getting ready to raise it to .2% in a bit. The fish are still acting normal. It looks to me like Blackie has a piece missing from his tail fin, but I have had no luck getting a picture or video that shows this. It's hard to even be sure when I watch him. Now I'm wondering if he was simply injured by something I put in the tank.
  14. Thank you Amanda! I don't know for sure how I got such long finned beauties but I sure do love them! The problem I found with my filter mod attempts was first that the water flow pushed soft filter material into the wheel so it wouldn't turn. Then when I tried to cut apart the cartridge to use the frame to prevent that...well it didn't work so well. I am going to try again sometime when I have the time to play with it until I get it right. I may be better off with a kind of sponge rather than floss stuff. More research and brain storming is needed! When I treated last year (more than a year, but less than 2 years ago) I treated with PraziPro, and salt. I followed the prazi protocol here at Koko's as best I could and I think I made it through 4 rounds. It wasn't a perfect treatment, but it stopped the fin rot and they've been ok until now. 1) I noticed the white spots within 36 hours of adding the moss ball. (It may just be a coincidence) 2) I first noticed the spots last night (8/19/14) 3) I don't see any additional spots. It might be a little bit bigger...or my imagination could be making it look as huge as the whole fish I am so frustrated. For like 2 1/2 weeks they lived in this tank while it was under-filtered, with no water changes. Why, oh why, do they start to develop problems AFTER I improve things? Water change on the big tank is done. Filters are running on an empty tank right now. The hard tank decorations have been boiled. Except the really big rock. I cooked that in the oven. Plastic plants can be bleach disinfected if needed. The boys are still in the little tank for now in case I need to do anything else to the tank before I put them back in. My tapwater Nitrates tested at 5ppm today. So I wonder if we just had a weird spike in our water. I've never seen or heard of our water going anywhere near 10ppm even.
  15. Further news Brownie the comet appears to have red steaks in his tail.
