  1. I know you can feed chilies and some jalape?os to birds. Not sure about fish : I would say that capsaicin only really affects mammals it wouldn't really hurt them, especially if they're very mild. Idk Sent from my iPod touch using Tapatalk - now Free
  2. Those FACES!!! They look like little water teddy bears. I love them. Great find! Congrats!
  3. Ugh now I had too many names to choose from Thanks everyone! He's such a character. He's so incredulous about everything. He'll go up to a plant and just kinda state at it for a minute, nibble it, then move to a rock, then a pebble, then the intake tube, over and over with pepper by his side. I'm in love
  4. BAHAHAHAHAH! That's hilarious. I thought for sure he was dead. He was being dramatic. Rude snail. But thanks!
  5. Uh oh. I got another plant. And I decided to try the rotala cutting. On the left side it's not cut, on the right side, you can see the little sprig I put in the middle. It looks like a jumbled mess right now. But I just did a water change and added 2 more pounds of gravel I rearranged a couple of things. My glass catfish LOVE this tank. Way more than the column. They used to hide a lot in the column. Now there are even more hiding spots, and they choose right in the front. The snail gave me a heart attack tonight. I'm so attached to him and I accidentally buried him in the new gravel and then had to dig him out and I thought I killed him. He was hanging half out of his shell and not moving. So I laid him down, turned out the light and not even a minute later he was back to running (yes I mean running) around the tank. Crazy nerite. Anyway! I can't stop adding plants to this darn tank. I just love it.
  6. A week and a half ago, I went to a far away fish store and fell in love with a little oranda. And I went through the entire store picking out things for my other tanks, but he just didn't leave my mind. So I impulse bought him. And stuck him in my QT. During this week, my black moor died. I had no idea why so I waited a few days with no signs of any sickness in my main tank and Mr. Oranda did GREAT in the QT. I woulda uploaded pictures earlier, but theres no light on my QT so they would've been bad. SO. I came home tonight and decided that it was time for him to join his friends. Pepper (my calico) never left my black moor's side, and she's been mopey and sitting in the corner since he passed. I put new oranda in the tank tonight, and they won't stop touching each other. I call him "he" because I know Pepper is female and he has NON stop had his nose up her tail fins It warmed my heart seeing them get along so quickly :D Here, have a lot of pictures: "Oh mah gosh! This tank is so big!!!" BFF's. The rare picture of Nugget in the back ground! She's shy, what can I say. Pepper is pumped. Full body shot? Of Nugget the pearlie!?!?! WHAT!?!!? They met each other mighty quick. Nugget was actually a fan of him and didn't run away. See what I mean???? Naughty fish. He's sweet <3 And they already don't leave each other's sides so thats always a good sign. I would love some name suggestions. I asked my boyfriend for help and all he could come up with in the week and a half was "Sandy"............ Yeah. I like Jasper but I really would love more suggestions! Thanks for looking!!!! PS. I just went back and looked at all the pictures to make sure they uploaded fine and started laughing SO hard because Nugget is in ALL but two pictures. And I didn't notice it at first. Sneaky little photobomber
  7. I think we're all forgetting such a perfect name for her; Pumpkin! Because she's big, and round, and orange (those are carrots, but they're orange too) She's SO cute. Mine is getting ready to come out of her QT too! Then its picture time :] LOVE the wen on her. And her black eyes!
  8. That's me I hate it when our distributors send fish like that! It's just common sense to look at the fish and make sure it's healthy as well as the systems are in check... It annoys me to death! Totally agree! It's annoying. I wish there was a better way to do it. But I always get stuck doing it That's what happens when you manage a fish department :[ Good luck with your new oranda! Pictures ASAP!!! :]
  9. I wish I had another QT. I don't though. (Mine is currently occupied by an oranda) So I guess technically I'm using this one as a QT. Cherry barbs are darn hardy so if they do get it, I can dip the crap out of them and they should be fine. I could do a bucket with a heater and airstone. That wouldn't be too bad but then again I've already exposed the cherry barbs because of my actions without really thinking. They still look really good today. So I'm hoping they'll be ok! I have it cranked to 86 in the big tank. The glass actually feels warms :3 but that's because my house is 62 right now. I raised the little one to 83-84 and I'm just going to keep a close eye on them. And AMEN to life pouring. I woke up 10 mins before my organic chemistry class this morning, thinking it would just be another class. Only to get there and see everyone taking an exam. I had no idea. I just started crying haha. Life is just a pouring on Sierra right now. But I'm off to a 12 hour shift so I'll check back later! Haha I've never taken any kind of chemistry class so right off the bat you're better than me. And eek, 12 hour shifts. Don't forget to take care of yourself as well as the fish! NEVER take organic chemistry. It will slowly rot your brain. Until you forget you have tests on days. I just FINALLY got back from my shift. But now I'm sitting, on Koko's and seeing that my glass cats show no signs of ick yet :] Wahoo.

  11. I raised the salt in the tank two days ago when I saw his fins but I haven't started Prazi or anything. I should probably do that, you're right.
  12. I do realize the risk. I moved my betta out into a divided tank with my blue baby betta. So the only other fish in the tank are cherry barbs. If the tank does have a break out, because it's smaller it will be so much easier to treat with water changes and smaller amounts of meds. The large tank is being treated but they're dropping like flies and it's making me so upset because I cherish that tank I was trying so hard to keep everything down but the nitrates just kept going up and I couldn't figure out why. This apparently is just not my fish keeping week I'm going to monitor it. If I see ANYTHING I'll try and figure it out. Because those glass catfish are my babies. And they're going to be a pain in the butt to treat if they do get it. Where they're scaleless, salt can be more harmful than ick. Most medications are terrible for them too. So I'm hoping that keeping the temp high and doing little water changes every day will TRY and prevent it. But we'll see I guess I'm not really looking forward to having to restock my big tank. I have 5 fish left and I'm treating their tank like mad. So I'm hoping they'll live as well . But thanks for your input and the reminder Alex! I appreciate it.
  13. I have been having a nitrate problem in my tropical tank. It's been really high and I've been doing 50% water changes EVERY day in order to keep it down. I've checked my tap water ; nothing. Even prime isn't helping. So today I come home, I lost a marbled hatchetfish, a rummy nose tetra and a swordtail. They have ick. A very bad case of ick, which I've never had before :/ so I raised the temp up, dosed them in parasite guard and was about to add salt when I realized my ghost cats were in there. And they're so sensitive to it. So. This is what I need opinions on; I'm going to move them. They are showing no signs of ick at all they aren't even listless. It took me half an hour to catch them . I have a 5.5 gal tank with a betta, 3 cherry barbs and a zebra snail in it. However. It's completely planted. I think I'm going to put them in there. I'm drip acclimating them right now to that tank. If I do a small water change every day until the big tank is situated, do you think they'll live? I know this might sound awful, but if the barbs die, I can replace them. These glass cats have been alive for 3 years and I love them. I don't want to lose them. So there would be 6 fish and a snail in a planted 5.5 with a 20 g filter on it. Opinions?
  14. I feel like he was maybe a poorly bred fish. Because he got sick a lot for only being around 4 months, where my others have never been sick at all
  15. I was just wondering if it was the same moor. Could you feel his belly when you get home and let us know how it feels? Along with posting a video. Was he fine prior to the salt dip or did this behavior start before the dip? He passed while I was gone I'm so upset, he was my buddy. His belly was tender, and he wasn't like that the day before yesterday. He was happily swimming around with his friends and eating from that food dispenser I made. When I dipped him, he just had the fin tears. What could have caused him to go downhill so fast?!?!
  16. In all honesty, I'm not sure if he's going to make it by the time I get out of work he just takes a big gulp of air every 5-7 seconds. Very labored. it's so heartbreaking to watch. I moved him to his bucket with a bubbler and set him up high so the cats won't know where to find him. When I get back I will update you all.
  17. One moor thing (see what I did there) About a week ago I posted in the d&d about him being floaty, but the next day he was fine. Do you think this might have something to do with that?
  18. I don't have two quarantines and my one is currently occupied by an oranda that I bought a few days ago. I do however have a 5 gallon bucket and a bunch of extra airstones and filters. The only thing I'm worried about is my very adventurous cats. So if I do really need to separate him then I could do that and find a place to hide him from them.
  19. I woke up and he's still the same I will post a video later, I have to work all day again today. He was normal the day before yesterday, but then yesterday he was floating around on his nose at the top with a few couple mm tears in his tail. Now they're even worse but I think some of them are because he was thrashed about yesterday. He has been treated for flukes in the past. His poo looked okay yesterday but today it's white and stringy never a good sign. His gills look ok. He ate yesterday but not this morning. The salt dip was 3% I think. Alex showed me how the last time we has a problem. And it was probably 2-3 minutes long. The only other thing that changed is the temperature. I don't have anything to regulate it so as the house temperature has gone down (here is the chilly state of maine) so has the tank temp. It's about 69 right now. I know they're okay with cooler temps and it didn't happen over night it's progressively gotten slightly cooler as the days have gone by. Ugh. Weekends are the WORST time for fish to fall ill I work so so so much
  20. My QT has a fish in it I bought an oranda not even 5 days ago. So I have him laying in a 5x10 fine mesh net inside the tank with the lights on so he doesn't float everywhere and no one can pick on him. He's just resting on the bottom. I have no idea what happened! He was perfect yesterday and now he's so sick
  21. I came home after a very stressful morning with Ollie my black moor and a very long shift at work to find him floating aimlessly in the tank, one side humped over to the top of the tank and his mouth just gasping for air. He also got helplessly tangle in a plant and couldn't get out earlier (according to my boyfriend who has freed him). I did a water change 2 days ago. My water parameters are normal, no ammonia, no nitrate, about 15ppm I nitrate. I haven't added any medications but I gave him a salt dip this morning because he had a few fin tears. I'm on the mobile site right now so can't fill out the entire list of things. But I have 3 filters on the tank, it's a 55 gallon with a 3 inch pearl scale and a 4 inch calico fantail. He's about 5 inches. I also have a tiny BN pleco. I will try to get my computer working tomorrow but for tonight, he's so far gone and so sad looking I don't think I can help him plus it's 1am where I am and I only have some medicines. Advice? Anyone? Should I just let him go or should I try something?
  22. OOOOOOOOO fiddler crabs are awesome. Everyone calls me the crab whisperer and always comes to me for crab advice because I know so much about them. Land, salt, fresh, brackish Salinity for fiddlers is 1.008. I would pick up a hydrometer if you don't already have one Also. Look up Halloween crabs. I think you'll change your mind they're awesome I'm setting up a tank for 2 right now!!! And I have my glass cats in a column tank and they do just fine
  23. I could just cut the tops off and replant them?!?! Jungle here I come. And thank you!
