  1. Yikes! Probably not often enough! One of my HOB's is about a month old because the old one just quit on me one day. And the other one I completely cleaned about 6 months ago because we had a leak. I usually just pull the filters, ceramic rings, & sponges every water change and rinse them out really well, (with old tank water, of course) and wipe the front where the water comes out. Whenever I pulled the filters and emptied them, they always looked pretty clean so I stopped doing it. (Now I'm embarrassed to admit that) I don't feed the gel food as often. The Herbiovore is not my favorite either because it's SUPER messy. I do have Metro-Med, but don't see an expiration date on it. I also have garlic (the kind in the jar in the fridge - is that what you mean?)
  2. Hello! I'm back again with my problem fishy. Everything was fine until yesterday. I noticed my calico fantail sitting on the bottom of the tank. I immediately did a 100% water change because I noticed slight ammonia and nitrates. All other fish are behaving normally. Whenever I approach the tank she perks up and swims around, but when she stops, she sinks. She's interested in food. I fed only peas yesterday and this morning. I noticed red spots on her belly this morning which I assume must be from bottom sitting. https://youtu.be/lE1Lr5TTUrM Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank) 0 * Ammonia Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) 0 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.6 * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.6 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? 3. Wow! Cool video! I think I'm going to be a nervous fishy momma and probably not feed lettuce for a while. Most of the time, when I feed the lettuce, it's kind of wilted from being in the fridge for a couple of days. Well, this batch was just bought today and seemed a little thicker and tougher than normal. Looks like I'll be eating salads for lunch this week and the fishies can eat the gel food and frozen blood worms/brine shrimp for a while
  4. Hi! I'm glad too! I thought she was going to be a goner. She literally was limp in my hand when I was trying to look in her mouth. I've worked so hard to learn as much as I can to have healthy fish and a healthy tank. I was doing great....until today! Obviously I still have some things to learn! Blanch your lettuce?!! Who knew?!
  5. No, I did not. I usually just put it in the tank and they munch on it. They leave everything but the large vein that runs down the leaf. (although, if I leave it in, they eat that too!) I'm assuming that I'm supposed to blanch it? If so, I guess I've been extremely lucky up to this point having never done that before. I've been feeding them red leaf lettuce for a couple of years with no problems. Boy do I feel dumb...
  6. UPDATE: I just went to check on her and there was a 3 inch piece of red leaf lettuce floating in the tank!! She WAS choking!!! I took the lettuce out earlier because they didn't seem interested and it didn't look like any piece of the lettuce was missing, but apparently there was!! She obviously got it up by herself. When I looked in her mouth earlier, I couldn't see anything, but it must have been too far back to see. She's acting normal now...thank God!
  7. Whoa!! What is that?! I just attached my video link...did I do something wrong??
  8. Hi Sharon! Thank you!! I haven't been here for a while because the fish have been doing great!! I did remove her from the tank and looked in her mouth. I didn't see anything. And, she was completely still when I held her, which kind of scared me, because she normally puts up a fight! (It was almost like she knew I was trying to help her) I kept her in a plastic container for a little while to give her less space to swim and also so I could watch her. The "chewing" slowed a bit and she just sort of floated in the corner for a while. She looked tired out to me! I just treated the tank with Prazi and put her back in.
  9. Here is another video: not sure why it's so big!
  10. All fish were acting normal when I fed this morning (soaked shrimp pellets). About an hour ago, one fish is displaying very strange behavior. I put some red leaf lettuce in the tank but none of the fish seemed interested. (edited to say: I thought she was choking because she kept "chewing" constantly. Then she would swim upside down, then sit in the plants. But there's nothing in the tank that she could be choking on except the lettuce, but there was no part of the lettuce missing off of the leaf!) Normal behavior this morning. Video shows sudden abnormal behavior
  11. Well, today a red dot has appeared on "her" wen. Not sure what it is or why, but the vent is back to normal.
  12. So I guess I'm to assume that this is normal and that this is just a female fish? I swear that the vent completely changed overnight. I always went by the fact that this fish constantly chases my female fantail around with what I assumed was spawning behavior. I'm so confused. Now today, I came home from work and noticed that "she" has two white bumps on the edge of her tail today. They weren't there yesterday. Any idea what this could be? (I just did two rounds of Prazipro within the last month.) Here are two pictures. The one shows a close up of the vent. I just want to be sure that it is normal and I shouldn't be worried. (I'm still pretty ignorant when it comes to fish, but I'm learning) I guess I'm just nervous because this wasn't how this fish looked 4 days ago or any time before that. And now the two bumps have me worried.
  13. Yes, the fins always show some streaking. Everything about this fish is normal except for the vent. I always thought it was a male fish and that my fantail was the female, because "he" aways chases her and has "his" head in her back end. So, is he a she??

Prazi pro about 1 month ago for suspected flukes. 2 rounds * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? nothing out of the ordinary * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? no Wow! It's been a long time since I've been on here for help! (that's a good thing!) Anyway, I can't figure out what is wrong with my oranda's vent. It looks like something is sticking out of it and it's red. I noticed it three days ago and have been keeping an eye on it. It happened just after he/she ate some red leaf lettuce. They eat it right down to the thick vein part of the leaf...which at first I wondered if it was a hard piece of lettuce coming out! Sounds crazy...but I can't figure out what it is! He/she has been acting totally normal otherwise. (note: those are not missing scales. they just didn't grow back shiny. It's been like that since he was tiny.) I posted this one just for fun because the little guy looks horrified by what he sees!
  15. I don't have a veggie clip, so I use one of those magnetic glass cleaners to hold the lettuce in place! Works like a charm! I bought it way back when, and I never liked it...glad I found a use for it!
  16. I just wanted to update: I tried the red leaf lettuce and you were 100% right...it really got things moving for her (and everyone else!) and took care of the floating! Whenever I see her getting floaty, I feed her the lettuce and it works wonders. This will be a staple in our house from now on. I was so surprised to see how much they all love it too!
  17. Update: Today's readings are ammonia - 0 nitrites - 0 nitrates - 5 My last water change was about 80% 4 days ago! At that time nitrites were .5.
  18. The hardness out of the tap (after the softener) is green with one drop! After I use Replenish, it's 7.
  19. I don't have a link to show you, but the link you provided with the automatic water change system sounds very much like what my husband explained to me. (he works at NASA and they have something similar in their bio lab, which is where he got the idea - although he does not work in the bio lab!) Anyway, he plans on drilling through the floor in the corner of our living room (where the tank is located) and running the lines up through the basement. He's very good at the mechanical/plumbing stuff so I trust he will do a great job! (although, I hate the fact that my beautiful hardwood floors have to have holes drilled through them ) He will be using pvc overflow piping too. What do you mean by my tank water "will color" with time? Does this mean it will become cloudy? Algae? I do not have any live plants in the tank if that makes a difference.
  20. But would it stress the fish to go from treated soft water to very hard water? (I can't remember how hard our water is because we had it tested about 7 years ago and that is when we installed the softener)
  21. My husband would like to install an automatic water change system to my tank so that I never have to do water changes again. The water would be tempered to match my tank which is usually around 72-74F. Instead of doing weekly water changes, a continuous exchange of water would take place at a very slow rate to be equivalent to me changing out the 75 gallons per week. Our ph on our tap is always 7.6 and there is 0 ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. If we were to do this, how often and how much Prime would I have to add to the tank? Also, we have a water softener because our city water is very hard. Would it be easier to put the soft water in the tank and add Replenish, or bypass the water softener and deal with adjusting the hard water? To me, it seems easier to use the soft water and adjust it with Replenish, because that is what the fish and I are used to dealing with. Any thoughts or input would be helpful
  22. Well, unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to do the water change yesterday, but plan to do one this evening. But I have good news! Today my ammonia is at 0! I even looked straight down the tube to see if there was any hint of green in the color and it was a bright yellow! Nitrites still .25 and Nitrates still 5.
  23. Today my readings are: ammonia: .25ppm nitrites: .25ppm nitrates: 5ppm Should I prime and let it brew or do a large WC? My last WC was 75% five days ago.
