  1. Beautifuful fish. I don't know why, but that last pic makes me think of a Mafia gangster...lol
  2. Update on how Miles is doing: he is still swimming around instead of hiding. I have been able to remove about a third of the gravel...still working on getting it down to half the original amount. Both filters are now set up using the bio balls, and the floss. Water is still at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 10 nitrates, and ph at 72. Thanks for all the help. Hopefully all future posts will be just to encourage others, and to get some helpful information from others about possibly setting up a planted tank in the future. I have read other posts about different types of food, and I am considering either getting the Replashy Soilent Green, or Hikari Lionhead. Maybe if I feed him better food it will help in his recuperation.
  3. I had my water tested today after work: ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 10, ph 7.2. The Aquaclear 110 came in, and I have it all set up in the aquarium. Now I just need the other items you recommended I use in my filters. Miles is still acting normal. Hope you had a great day! I know mine been better since you've helped me with straightening out my tank.
  4. I asked my husband the same thing, and he said that was what she said. I think she mixed them up, because even on my own test kit I was getting nitrates @ 10 ppm, and 0 nitrites. The LFS told Tony exactly the opposite. Tony said she said that they were both in good ranges. I did remove the 2 cups that you recommended I take out with each water change. Will continue until I only have half of the original amount. Thanks?
  5. Update 4/2 Good morning; My husband just call me with the LFS's readings: ph 7.0 Nitrite 10 ppm Nitrate 0 ppm Ammonia 0 Miles' still out and about...no longer hiding his head behind the plant. How often should I take these readings? Thanks?
  6. Thanks 4prettyfish. It's nice being a part of this group of wonderful people.
  7. Koko, I haven't been able to purchase a new test kit yet, and the old one doesn't appear to work, so I haven't bothered to take any readings. I did order the other items for both of my filters that you mentioned to use. I'm hoping the additional filter along with the ceramic rings, and the bonded pad will clear up any imbalances in the tank.
  8. 4/1 update: I did a 50% water change this morning before work, and have noticed since getting home from work that Miles is not hanging out behind the plant anymore. He still has the black areas on his right side, fins, and under his head. His appetite has never been effected.
  9. I hit add reply before finishing what I was going to say...fat fingers... I read the directions on the Melafix bottle before putting any into the tank, at least I did that much right. .I'll definitely keep you up to date. Thanks to everyone. I am no longer playing hit and miss?
  10. I removed all carbon from the filter while medicating with the salt rock.
  11. Thanks so much. Now with such good information to go on hopefully I won't do any more harm to my fish. I have been going on what I was told by my LFS to do. I know that's no excuse, but it is what it is.
  12. Sorry I forgot to answer your question about the filter media. It has two containers that I fill with Ammo-Carb and two slots that I slide Emperor power filter cartridges into.

The heater is being cleaned so isn't in the video, but it is a Marineland Stealth 250 Watt.
  14. Also, will I need to get another filter besides the Emperor 400 and the Aquaclear 110, and should I do more than weekly 50% water changes until the 110 arrives? You've been great. Thanks for the help!
  15. I did a 50% water change as I was testing my tap water. I'll remove a little more now. What is wrong with him?

  17. I just ordered an Aquaclear 110 yesterday should be here by April 4th. I now have a video and some pics in photobucket. I just need to go to the link that someone was so kind to share to see how to link to here. My test kit is 3 years old can it have expired and is giving me wrong readings?
  18. Thanks all. I'm checking on setting up a photobucket account so I can show you a picture. If I can work it all out on how to then link to here.
  19. Thanks so much for sending this to me. I am definitely struggling with how to do all this. My apologies. Test Results for the Following: * Ammonia Level (tank): 0 ppm * Nitrite Level (tank): 0 ppm * Nitrate level (Tank): 10 ppm * Ammonia Level (Tap): 0 ppm * Nitrite Level (Tap): 0 ppm * Nitrate level (Tap): between 5 and 10 ppm * Ph Level, (Tank) (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) : 7.2 * Ph Level, (Tap) (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 7.2 Other Required Info: * Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API drops * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? Marine land Emperor 400 * What kind of water additives or conditioners? None * Water temperature? 72 degrees F * How often do you change the water and how much? Weekly 50% * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? 7 day 50% * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 75 gal 5 years running * How many fish in the tank and their size? 3 orandas 2 - 2" and 1 - 2 1/2", and 2 - 3" Bristlenose Pleco. * What do you feed your fish and how often? Tetra Veggie flakes, and Wardleys Goldfish flakes tried grapes but Orandas show no interest in them. * Any new fish added to the tank? No * Any medications added to the tank? No * List previous issues experienced (dropsy, SBD, etc.) 12 months ago anchor worms that came with moss that I purchased medicated with salt in tank, and microbe-lift BSDT for a week I think. 3 weeks ago fin rot medicated with API Melafix and salt for 1 week. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Frayed fins from the fin rot, and I think the black on the edge of his tail fin along with the powdery black that is under his head and behind his right front fin, and behind his back fins next to the body is some type of fungus. * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? Goes near bottom of aquarium behind a plant unless he sees me then he comes out and swims around. * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. I listed this above on previous issues experienced. * You can really help us to identify with the concern more accurately if you post some pictures and a short video. I'm not up on how to do this.
  20. I just registered, and I'm not sure if I have the time to check all the helpful info telling me how to go about asking for help, so I hope that I'm not breaking any rules, or going about this the wrong way. Please be patient with me. My Oranda of 3 years is hanging out near the bottom of the aquarium behind a plant. He comes out and swims around if he sees me. I've noticed that he has some black on the edge of his tail fin in two places, and a powdery black looking area behind his front fin, and under his chin if he had one. Aquarium stats are: Ammonia 0 ppm Nitrite 0 ppm Nitrate 10 ppm ph 7.2 Temperature 72 degrees F I do 50% water changes every Sunday. The above readings were taken a few minutes ago before the water change that is due. Does anyone know what type of disease this is and how to treat it. I have surfed the net looking for an answer but nothing seems to fit. I at first thought China disease , but the black isn't near the base of his tail. Thank you!
