  1. Tail is improving.... Looks like the damaged part just came right off at some point...! tank is salted to 1%. How long should I keep the salt in? So glad I didn't have to use meds! I mixed up some repashy for the first time (without any meds of course!) and he seemed to love it
  2. ok, righto... will give this a few days then and see if things improve
  3. Hahaha you guys no but srsly thoughts of actions to be taken? I can send the pics to you by pm or email or something?

About 4-5 days ago I noticed Nemo's lower bottom left fin had fraying/holes/red splotches and red streaks from the fin up to the body. This is only affecting ONE of his fins - all others appear to be healthy...! This was partly due to the fact that I had been away for over a week and my caretaker only put in a 1/2 capful of Amquel+ every few days as instructed by me, and fed small amounts of Hikari Pellets. I hadn't tested the water before I left, which I should have, but I had changed 30% of it on routine. When I noticed the problem I tested the water and ammonia was under 1ppm, nitrites 0ppm, but nitrate was in the 40/50ppm range. From then until now I did two 50% water changes which has brought the nitrate down to 0ppm now. I have on hand: metro-meds food, kanaplax powder, repashy supergreen gel food, prazipro, salt, and Amquel+. What schedule/dosage would you recommend for treatment? Nemo's a happy bugger, he has plenty of energy and isn't bottom sitting and is eating fine, just being all-over lovely. Except with owies! Pics (sorry some are blurry, he moves so fast!) You can see the hole in this one Pretty fishie
  5. Checking in with a Huzzah! Everything went according to plan. No blips even, in the pH or the other readings. YAY! ALEX, YOU DA BEST. \m/ Here, have a Happy Fish Video! (click on the image to open a new window) I loooove his tail so much. And he's really gotten a lot more gold scales since I first got him.. he was much much more black back then. Must be that Hikari food I've been giving him. ^_^ Back to healthiness! On that note... is it ok to give Repashy supergreen as a treat once in a while without any meds, just by itself?
  6. So unless there's any serious incidents or blips, I don't really need to post the daily readings from now on do I? I'll keep to this schedule and maintain the levels. Your instructions on this last half are very clear So I know how to handle it. I'll post a video update in the next few days to show you all that he is a happy fish once again. Don't we all just love happy fishies!
  7. Great! Will do, and I think things will be clearer now. You are the man!
  8. Yes, I added the Amquel+ and Baking soda as soon as I remembered. I'll monitor parameters. Is there something missing from what I've provided below? yesterday (9/9) was my "Day 7" and this is the NEW (semi-revised) schedule and dosage wherein it was changed to 2 days between each water change, and only a single dose of Amquel, not double. I had been doing double up until 9/8, Day 6. (9/3/13) Day 1: 50% WC, recommended prazi (1 tsp), salt (2 level tsp)... recommended double amquel (4 tsp) (9/4/13) Day 2: recommended double amquel no WC (4 tsp) (9/5/13) Day 3: recommended double amquel no WC (4 tsp) (9/6/13) Day 4: 100% WC, recommended prazi (1 tsp), salts (2 tsp), recommended double amquel (4 tsp) (9/7/13) Day 5: recommended double amquel no WC (4 tsp) (9/8/13) Day 6: single amquel no WC (2 tsp) - was recommended by you that it was OK to do just a single dose from here on out.... (9/9/13) Day 7 (last night): 100% WC, single amquel (2 tsp), salts (2 tsp) NO PRAZI So last night was the above step. There are salts in the tank but no prazi now.
  9. Alex, in the spirit of being up front and sharing all known information.... ugh it's been a long night. The mold problem from the water leak really threw me off. Once I was able to relocate the tank after emptying it, I performed the 100% WC and I switched on the filters once more but forgot my Amquel. I thought I had done it but I had not, because i was very distracted with ripping up the carpet and wearing masks and the whole jazz. I didn't realize my bottle was still in the other room and not used until about half an hour ago. So nearly 2 hours went by with the "NEW" 100% WC water going through the filters without any Amquel+ or the baking soda to bring up pH. So I can just see it.. pH crash to 6.0 and chlorine/chloramines in the tap...? Would 2 hours do it?! I killed everything, didn't I? Of course I've added everything back in and poor mr Nemo has been waiting so patiently in his holding tank throughout this long night. My only option is to monitor the ammonia to see if it spikes...?! God I am so unseasoned at this... boooo. Isn't there a book that I could get?! lol
  10. Alex.. I know you help a lot of people lol. I'm sorry. But I'll quote a post below where you changed the schedule: Today is day 4 actually. Yesterday I added your above suggestion. He is much much better! Rest occasionally on the bottom but it seems to be back to "normal" hanging out to rest. He remains swimming around for hours at a time now. yay! He had some cement-grey poos... I don't think I've seen THAT before. :/ Hmm. Didn't change his food or anything. So it appears that the schedule has changed from every other day... to WC, prime, prime, WC... two days in between each WC. OK... SO I guess I'll just stick him in his tub, treated w/ the amquel and pH and temp matched....w/ a bubbler while I do the WC,.. thanks Alex again! So your original schedule you gave me was this: Day 1: New water (100% WC), Prazi, Salt, Double Prime Day 2: Double Prime Day 3: New water (100% WC), Prazi, Salt, Double Prime Day 4: Double Prime Day 5: New Water (100% WC), Salt, Double Prime Day 6: Double Prime Day 7: New Water (100% WC), Salt, Double Prime Day 8: Double Prime Day 9: New water (100% WC), Prazi, Salt, Double Prime Day 10: Double Prime Day 11: New water (100% WC), Prazi, Salt, Double Prime Day 12: Double Prime Day 13: New Water (100% WC), Salt, Double Prime Day 14: Double Prime Day 15: New Water (100% WC), Salt, Double Prime Day 16: Double Prime Day 17: New water (100% WC), Prazi, Salt, Double Prime Day 18: Double Prime Day 19: New water (100% WC), Prazi, Salt, Double Prime Day 20: Double Prime Day 21: New Water (100% WC), Salt, Double Prime Day 22: Double Prime Day 23: New Water (100% WC), Salt, Double Prime Day 24: Double Prime And in the above quoted post, you said if I was on day 3 then no need to do a WC... and do one instead on day 4. This is what changed the schedule to be two days of amquel between every water change instead of every other day. ? So this is what I have done so far based on that: (9/3/13) Day 1: 50% WC, recommended prazi (1 tsp), salt (2 level tsp)... double amquel (4 tsp) (9/4/13) Day 2: amquel no WC (4 tsp) (9/5/13) Day 3: amquel no WC (4 tsp) (9/6/13) Day 4: 100% WC, recommended prazi (1 tsp), salts (2 tsp), double amquel (4 tsp) (9/7/13) Day 5: double amquel no WC (4 tsp) (9/8/13) Day 6: single amquel no WC (2 tsp) - was recommended by you that it was OK to do just a single dose from here on out.... (9/9/13) Day 7 (today): 100% WC, single amquel (2 tsp), salts (2 tsp) NO PRAZI I think where I misunderstood you was that we were just expanding the days between each water change...? Was I supposed to be off of Prazi already!? arrrrgh you help is needed lol. >_< I wish I could know more to be the judge of scheduling...
  11. I'd appreciate that if you can. sorry :/ It must be late where you are! Thanks. I will add the amquel and salts, no prazi for tonight.
  12. He is doing really well! I'm tempted to say he's back to normal. Ok, I accidentally wrote "amquel and prime" when I meant amquel and salts.... is it possible for you to do a quick revised schedule? on the 4 day break.... I keep loosing track because it was changed. So we've determined that we'll do 2 days inbetween every 100% WC then? Day 1: 50% WC, recommended prazi (1 tsp), salt (2 level tsp)... double amquel (4 tsp) Day 2: amquel no WC (4 tsp) Day 3: amquel no WC (4 tsp) Day 4: 100% WC, recommended prazi (1 tsp), salts (2 tsp), double amquel (4 tsp) Day 5: double amquel no WC (4 tsp) Day 6: single amquel no WC (2 tsp) - was recommended by you that it was OK to do just a single dose from here on out.... Day 7 (today): 100% WC, single amquel (2 tsp), salts (2 tsp) NO PRAZI Day 8: single amquel no WC (2 tsp) Day 9: single amquel no WC (2 tsp) Day 10: 100% WC, single amquel (2 tsp), salts (2 tsp).... add prazi? y/n? I don't really know.... thanks for your input! Oh and carpet is mildewy from the water spill. Anger! My mom wants to spray lysol on it as we ripped it up and are propping it right now with a dehumidifyer... is the lysol going to be a problem? The tank is now about 20 ft away from the area now... And how long do you anticipate we continue...? The full 24 days?
  13. Well, the above schedule that I wrote is what I have been following for my 20 gal tank: Day 1: 50% WC, recommended prazi (1 tsp), salt (2 level tsp)... double amquel (4 tsp) Day 2: amquel no WC (4 tsp) Day 3: amquel no WC (4 tsp) Day 4: 100% WC, recommended prazi (1 tsp), salts (2 tsp), double amquel (4 tsp) Day 5: double amquel no WC (4 tsp) Day 6 single amquel no WC (2 tsp) - was recommended by you that it was OK to do just a single dose from here on out.... Day 7 (today): 100% WC and then... just single amquel and prime (1 tsp)? no prazi?
  14. Hey Alex... I bought the 4 oz size Prazi, which is what... 24 tsp? And I used 2 tsp so far, so I have 22 doses left...? 0ppm on all fronts, pH creeping down to 7.0. I did my 100% WC but stopped before adding the other elements - on your original schedule, you apparently spaced in periods of time with NO PRAZI, correct? These were the bits in blue? So it's like we're taking a break..? You wrote: Day 1: New water (100% WC), Prazi, Salt, Double Prime Day 2: Double Prime Day 3: New water (100% WC), Prazi, Salt, Double Prime Day 4: Double Prime Day 5: New Water (100% WC), Salt, Double Prime Day 6: Double Prime Day 7: New Water (100% WC), Salt, Double Prime Day 8: Double Prime But it's been altered to be WC with two days inbetween with now just a single dose of Amquel. As I had mentioned..: Day 1: 50% WC, recommended prazi, salt... double amquel Day 2: amquel no WC Day 3: amquel no WC Day 4: 100% WC, recommended prazi, salts, double amquel Day 5: amquel no WC Day 6 amquel no WC Day 7 (today): 100% WC and then... just amquel and prime? no prazi?
  15. 7.6, pH, 0ppm on all fronts, and 71.6 KH Same as yesterday. So Ill do amquel tonight. I'm glad that i'm going to have to do the 100% wc tomorrow because unfortunately my carpet is starting to smell.... gonna have to move the tank stand and rip up the carpet! Urgh Edit: Nemo apoears to be normal on all fronts now.. Bulge is reduced to just a small bump. hes swimmin and begging for food always now
  16. My schedule thus far: Day 1: 50% WC, recommended prazi, salt... double amquel Day 2: amquel no WC Day 3: amquel no WC, levels were good Day 4 (yesterday) 100% WC, recommended prazi, salts, double amquel So today is Day 5.... no WC, just double amquel? or single dose? probably two days like before then, so Day 6 amquel Day 7 100% waterchange & redose?
  17. Ok gang - good news: metro-meds are in! bad news: after last night's 100% WC, I had a filter leak. I had bumped the housing apparently, so it was tiling back a bit... and the filter media was askew as well so this combination of things dripped out over the top of the filter head over the course of 4 hours 2.5 gallons.... all over the wall-to-wall carpet... around the tank so it's not like I can remove the carpet or even more the tank. (Luckily my mom had come out to use the restroom and found out!!) argh! I suppose it happens to everyone, water spills..... Lucky I have a wet/dry shop vac! That thing sucked up a whole gallon out of the rug. eesh. So importantly then, I lost 2.5 gal of medicated water (Prazi/salt). I just put some regular treated water because it was 4:30 in the morning and I was a zombie. How this this change things? I wasn't sure how much Prazi and salt to re-add. Advice? Specs: 7.6, pH, 0ppm on all fronts, and 71.6 KH. He perked up so happily when I came home and is begging for food. His bulge is definitely getting smaller.
  18. Today is day 4 actually.
  19. Hi gang. 7.6ph, 60ppmKH .25 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 0 nitrate I've never done a 100% water change before.. again.. forgive my fishy ignorance, but doesn't this mess with the cycle? Would it not truly be 100% as he needs some room to swim around in (so it's like.. 90%? but then meds/salt is still in the water...?) ....or do I remove him entirely, housing him in a tub and literally remove all water? Or do I remove say 75%, (left with 1/4th water in tank) add another 25% back in, then remove 25% so it's as if it was 100%? (I'm making it sound too complicated... what about just 50% WC back to back then?) sorry!
  20. I will order. Alex, what's your opinion on the schedule since it's 0ppm on AM, NI, and NR? (see my previous post) Should I still go ahead with 100% WC and redose prazi and salt? thanks! Nemo's been resting on he bottom only occasionally and is much more active now. Bulge still there though.
  21. Ok - 7.2 pH and 53.7 KH. Add another tsp of BS I guess..? 0ppm on all other fronts. Well, unfortunately as fall as I researched there is only a Petco and a small LFS where I live (being one of the smaller less populated islands here in Hawaii. I'm sure Honolulu has a lot more options and maybe I can mail order through somebody closer to me...) Neither one of these stores here where I live of them carry Seachem products. Not a single product of the line. Most of what they carry are API products and a few others, and lukcily Amquel as it does everything for the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, etc. But as I mentioned, special ordering through the stores will end up costing me more than if I just ordered online somewhere. I see that Petco has Prime online but doesn't stock it locally. Guess our store is too small. Time to order more stuff online! (shipping to Hawaii just... it hurts.) XD Orders captain?
  22. Check again, but it does not appear that you will need to do that. Make sure you keep pH above 7. You might want to switch to Seachem Prime after you are done with the Amquel. A number of people have reported that it lowers pH when you add more than a single dose. What?! Yikes! I will look about getting some. My LFS only had the Amquel and would be able to special order the Prime for me but I think it'll end up costing me more than if I ordered it online. Boo. I will be checking the levels in another hour or so after I do some errands. As I understand it, you wanted me to remove the salt and Prazi from the water and start with a fresh dose. If I don't do a WC or just do 50%, I'd be adding on top of whatever is already in there... and the dosage might be messed up. I'll report back with my findings. I hat to keep bugging you, but I thank you so very much.
  23. Okay, checking in! Today when I came home from work in the evening, I saw he was resting on the bottom but perked up when I came by and remained so, languidly swimming around in peaceful goldfish mode. No redness yay. His poos appear black, what is this a result of? The bulge is still there, although I think maybe it's getting a little smaller. maybe. He had soaked baby Hikari pellets for breakfast. Am thinking I should do a pea tonight? The levels before my double amquel+: 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, 0ppm nitrate 7.0 pH (up from yesterdays' 6.8 after adding 1.5 tsp BS) and still only at 35.8 kH, so I added another 1 tsp of BS.
