  1. Thanks. Thanks. What does Jack look like now? I agree! Thanks! I really love the color changes that Treasure's going through...
  2. Here's another shot of my amazing color-changing fantail, Treasure! One week later, we're starting to see three bands of color: black at the top, bronze in the middle, and silvery-white on the bottom. A bit of orange is also starting to appear around the edges of the black areas.
  3. Very pretty ranchus! Congrats on your new fish!
  4. You have beautiful fish! Our family's first goldfish (named Fred) was also a shubunkin, so I have a soft spot for them.
  5. Nice looking tank setup! In addition to looking for low-light plants, you should also consider looking for plants that will help keep down algae build-up, since the natural lighting from the window will encourage algal growth.
  6. Thanks! I think this is one of the funnest aspects of having a very young goldfish.
  7. Thanks. I was hoping to see some fun color changes, but I didn't expect Treasure to turn darker first! I think I already see hints of orange around the edges...
  8. Thanks, and great suggestion! If I have the time, I will do that.
  9. Thanks! I'm also very relieved it wasn't fin rot after all.
  10. I've had Treasure, a bronze fantail, for about a month now. When I first saw Treasure in the PetSmart store, his colors were a light bronze. After a week in QT, Treasure's head and back turned slightly darker bronze: After about 3 weeks in QT (and 1 week in the main tank,) with a diet of Omega One sinking pellets and a few bloodworms, peas, and cucumber snacks, Treasure's color on his head, back, dorsal fin and tail have darkened to almost black! I'm really excited about these color changes, and looking forward to seeing how they will continue to develop over time!
  11. Hi guys, sorry to take so long getting back to you. Life keeps getting in the way of posting... I kept Treasure in QT for another week with .3% salt treatment (no prazi). Treasure didn't like the daily water changes (still very skittish) and the poop looked normal (short and light brown) so I took a chance and put Treasure into the main tank with Skippy. Treasure and Skippy took a day or so to get used to each other, but so far, Treasure is settling down and doing great in the main tank! In fact, it looks like the black bits on Treasure's fins and tail was the beginning of a color change after all. Check out Treasure's new colors!
  12. Hi there, For what it's worth, I have a fairly stressful household with lots of loud voices and annoying techno music (I have two very active pre-teen children who play lots of computer games). Oddly enough, the techno music, vacuum cleaner, lawn mower, and Minecraft sound effects don't seem to bother the fish at all. I think maybe the ambient noise of the fish tank (the airstone and the filter) and the tank water itself help muffle the outside sounds. However, my new goldfish does get easily startled by the lights being turned on and off, or sudden movements like someone jumping in front of the aquarium or tapping on the glass. I've helped my new fish de-stress by moving slowly when I'm around the tank and adding plants to hide behind. Also, I hand-feed snacks (like shelled peas and bloodworms) to get the fish to trust me and associate me with yummy food. Also, I cover the tank with a towel when there's a lot going on and the fish is acting skittish. I hope that helps...
  13. Hi again, here's my update on Treasure's QT: Treasure is acting very skittish, twitching and darting around the tank and trying to hide from me. I added a plastic plant from the main tank for Treasure to hide behind, but it doesn't seem to have helped much. Treasure is also spending more time at the back of the QT tub. There's a bit more black around the edges of the dorsal fin and tail, although I don't see any signs of rot. I just completed the 3rd round of prazi with .1% salt. I'm starting to wonder if this is the beginning of a fungal infection or maybe tail rot, especially with Treasure's skittish behavior. I'd like to start on the .3% salt treatment today, rather than wait another week to complete a 4th round of prazi. So, how do I bring the salt concentration up to .3%? And should I be adding any medicine (like Maracyn?)
  14. I'm very sorry for your loss. Thank you. I'm glad we brought Ruby home with us, even though her time with us was short. She was a special little oranda.
  15. nope it does nothing to it. It only detoxifies it up to 1ppm per dose for 24 hours Your water must be degassing and releasing the ammonia. Yes, but when it detoxifies it, the bio filter can pick it up more easily. The prime just detoxifies it for the fish. It doesn't bond the ammonia or make it easier for The biological. They won't eat it until the filter media is cycled regardless if there is prime in the water or not.Let's get back on track here since this is a D&D thread. You are welcome to PM me if you would like to continue to discuss this Prime detoxifies ammonia by binding to it and converting it to a less toxic form. Did you read somewhere that it doesn't bond to ammonia? http://www.seachem.com/support/forums/showthread.php?t=3983 Anyway, I agree with all the assessments so far. It may be a color change, or a healing response from some previous insult. I am not inclined to think that it's a color change, given where it is. Nevertheless, the next couple of weeks will let us know more. Please keep us updated. Thanks, I will keep you updated. So far, other than the black marks, Treasure seems happy and healthy. I hope it stays that way.
  16. It's a 10 gallon QT tub, and when there were 2 small goldfish in there, they made a lot of poop, thus increasing the ammonia level to almost .25 before my daily water changes. But the tap says .25. Oh... Doesn't Prime remove the ammonia? The QT tub's ammonia test is yellow (close to 0) when I test it, so the Prime must do something... Okay, thanks.
  17. Okay, thanks. Should I do a 4th round of Prazi before increasing the salt to 0.3%? Okay, thanks. Should I do a 4th round of Prazi before increasing the salt to 0.3%? Are you using Prazipro liquid? Yes, I've been adding just less than 1/4 teaspoon of PraziPro daily to the QT tank for 5 days, then skip 1 day, then 5 days, then skip 1 day. With .1% salt.

  19. I also wondered if it was the beginning of a color change, too. Is that what it looks like when it starts?
  20. Okay, thanks. Should I do a 4th round of Prazi before increasing the salt to 0.3%?
  21. Sorry, I accidentally posted this before I'd completed it, and then I couldn't edit it, so here it is again: Test Results for the Following:* Ammonia Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrite Level(Tank) 0 * Nitrate level(Tank) 0 * Ammonia Level(Tap) .25 * Nitrite Level(Tap) 0 * Nitrate level(Tap) less than 5.0 * Ph Level, Tank (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.0 (hardness 150, alkalinity 180) * Ph Level, Tap (If possible, KH, GH and chloramines) 8.0 Other Required Info:* Brand of test-kit used and whether strips or drops? API drops * Water temperature? 77 F (room temp, no heater) * Tank size (how many gals.) and how long has it been running? 10 gal QT tub, 2 weeks * What is the name and "size of the filter"(s)? no filter, just med airstone in QT tub * How often do you change the water and how much? once daily 100 % (although a couple of days I went 2 days before changing the water) * How many days ago was the last water change and how much did you change? today 100% * How many fish in the tank and their size? 1 (1-1.5 inches) * What kind of water additives or conditioners? Prime * What do you feed your fish and how often? small floating pellets (4-5 once or twice daily) with a few bits of peas and bloodworms. Treasure eats everything before it hits the bottom of the tub * Any new fish added to the tank? QT tank * Any medications added to the tank? .1 % salt and Prazi, on the 3rd round of it * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? new black bit on tail and dorsal fin * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? very active and energetic swimming at bottom front of QT tub Treasure 2 weeks ago: Treasure today: Ruby's tail one week ago (notice similar black marks on both fish) : My new fantail, Treasure, has developed small black streaks in the tip of the tail and in its dorsal fins, which were not there a few weeks ago when I brought it home. It's tank mate, Ruby, also developed black streaks in its tail in the first few days after I brought it home, too. Ruby passed away a few days ago, so I'm keeping an extra-close eye on Treasure for any changes at all. I also inspected closely Treasure through a magnifying glass (I'm a bit OCD, I know) and saw more small teeny tiny bits of black throughout the tail. Are these ammonia burns? The ammonia level in the QT tub has never increased beyond .25 ppm. I've tested the water every day (sometimes twice a day.) Could this be a symptom of whatever killed off Ruby (I think it was internal parasites?) Also, Treasure has been darting around the tank a bit, especially after a water change. Is this normal new fish behavior?
