  1. Boy to have access to such beauties!!! Could you possible send me that little red and white lionhead(or lionchu or ranchu)
  2. Gorgeous tank and beautiful fish! How old is Peanut?
  3. Thanks everyone for your help and kind words. I shall get some ammonia tomorrow and do this the right way- fishless cycling .
  4. fantailfan1 is it just cleaning ammonia that you use? I thought it was some special 'pure' ammonia.
  5. Sorry Guys, he died in the night and yes tithra he was from the same store. They were both doing great til water issue stressers and then went downhill really fast. I won't be getting anymore from them but they were the one I got most of my fancies from when I had goldfish before. The other chain store we have is not known to have disease free fish so I will have to look around in other cities. In the meantime is there any way to make this tank safe or do I have to break it down and start over? And where would I get pure ammonia? I asked at the lfs and a couple of drug stores but no one seemed to know where I could purchase it. I feel so bad having to tell my Grandson that Elmo died. He was so excited about giving him to me
  6. I'm sorry for all the questions but want to be double sure I'm doing it right. I did the water change, added an extra 5 Tbsp of salt and will add another 5 in an hour. I added a regular dose of Prazipro but should I be upping it if I'm raising the salt? I'm finally catching on to the idea that this may be more to do with parasites, etc. rather than the nitrite spike. Elmo now has his mouth wide open all the time and his gills are working really hard. He also has slimecoat starting to come off which is exactly what my first fish did before she died. I hadn't done more than .1% salt on her either as the tank was cycling and I had read somewhere that you shouldn't do the prazi and .3% salt til your cycle was complete. Hopefully the Prazi and salt will save Elmo. He did try to eat two pellets tonight but he's not closing his mouth at all so they kept falling out.
  7. I can try upping the salt _ I'm just a little scared to stress him anymore than he is. Man I'm so slow posting I miss yours. I have lots of Prazi left but if I have to do 3 or 4 wc's a day I'll be using it up pretty fast.
  8. I just tested the water and the nitites are almost at.3% after 6 hours. If I do another back to back set of 90% water changes how much Prime should I put in to detoxify til tomorrow morning. I have been dosing it 2x for the last few days is that enough?
  9. He did bottom sit earlier when I wanted to do the salt for any pathogens or parasites he might have have had when I got him but even though I raised the level of salt over 2 days not long after it got to .3% he started bottom sitting so I started lowering it and when it was down to .1% he was up and active again. He's been very active ever since until the nitrites started climbing. I know the 3 rounds of Prazi(Prazipro liquid) wasn't enough and you're right tithra I probably brought more nasties in with the new biomax so I willstart the prazi again. The tank has had .1% salt in it all along. He's only been bottom sitting since the spike in nitrites. And I don't think the flow from the filter is too strong as he still swims around strongly and has no problem staying in one spot when he is bottom-sitting. The red at the base of his pecs is just a hint of red so I could be wrong about that and his gills are still quite red there's no paleness or brown tinge.
  10. tithra I stopped the prazi about six days ago. And the first seeded biomax was in from the start but I added the second batch of biomax about 5 days ago
  11. Sorry, I'm new at posting pics and videos The second two are videos. And the readings are from before the water change. The nitrites were 0 after the change but within 6or 7 hours they're back to .30. I also realized I didn't tell you why the nitrites spiked! During the third round of prazi I started getting a tinge of pink when I did the nitrite test (0 ammonia and nitrates 5) so I bought some more seeded biomax and set it up in a Aquaclear mini. Tests were great-no nitrites and then about the 4th day I did a water change and forgot to plug the mini back in and didn't realize it for about 7 hours. I plugged it back in and everything was good til the second day when the nitrites went sky high.I removed the mini and did 2 back to back 90% water changes but The nitrites just climb right back up even though I've been doing 3 or more 90-100% water changes a day. Nemo started bottom and top sitting and is gasping today. He will still eat.

  13. What a stunning fish! I'd never heard if them before but I will definately put one on my wish list
  14. Yes, gorgeous fish, and I'm wondering too what the short plants you have growing are.
  15. Wow, what an unbelievable amount of patience he must have to have taught Comet all that!
  16. Thanks for your help everyone. Unfortunately when I went in to check on her she was gone. I'm not going to replace her for awhile but could you please tell me what I should do with the tank right now to make sure that when I am ready to try again the tank will be safe and ready for a new fish.
  17. I took her out of tank and checked her throat but nothing there. She does have a white spot the size of a pin head just inside her left gill cover. She's white so couldn't see it in the tank. Will keep a closer eye on her for spots. The other two spots on her fins are gone. I moved her back and forth in the water to see if I could dislodge anything that might be caught in her gills. Anything else I should do? Thanks for all your help guys.
  18. OK , now she's swimming with her mouth wide open all the time. I will get her out and see if anything is lodged in her throat. There are only large rocks in her tank, could it possible a chunk of gel food? What else should I do? dnalex there's no ammonia in the tank and salt is at .3% . Should I go higher?
  19. This morning Sophie's moving around the tank but almost in a frenzy. She has her mouth wide open alot. The nitrites were reading .1 so I just did a 60% water change. Her gills are still bright red but her belly is getting pink (not the red spots she had before. She is not eating.
  20. I don't have a scale but will be able to get one on Wed.(we're an hour and a half from nearest city)The instructions on the metronidazole said to mix 1 of their measuring spoons(100mg) to one tablespoon of frozen food paste. Would this be about the same? The temp in the tank is 74 so I will slowly raise it to 78. I do use pickling salt - I also have a 2200 gal. pond so found out about it quickly!
  21. I'm sorry, I lost my camera and the adapter to download onto my comp. so even if I borrow a camera I can't get the pics to you. Since she hadn't eaten and was going downhill fast I decided that I would add metronidazole in when I did a water change about three hours ago.(The nitrites were still at .1) About half an hour ago she got up off the bottom and came up to where I usually feed her so I offered her a bit of gel food with the metronidazole in it. She did eat it and swim around for a bit and then went back to the corner again. She'd been sitting on the bottom in the corner all day so that is an improvement.(I think) Last night I raised the salt to .2% but was leary about the salt and metronidazole so didn't go to .3% today. Do you think I should? There are two white spots on her pecs and seemed about the same size today. They are not raised at all, just flat spots about the size of a pinhead. Hopefully I'm going in the right direction, if I'm not please let me know.
  22. I'm sorry my first post sounds like a crazy person (I was tired and stressed) but today Sophie is on the bottom and not eating. is there anything you would recommend I do?

Only salt to .1% since nitrites showed up. * List previous issues experienced (dropsy, SBD, etc.) Had red blotches on stomach but they had disappeared . * Any unusual findings on the fish such as "grains of salt," bloody streaks, frayed fins or fungus? Yesterday there were small shiny bubbles on fins so did a mild salt dip (according to advice in another post) * Any unusual behavior like staying at the bottom, not eating, etc.? no * List entire medication/treatment history for fish and tank. Please include salt, Prazi, PP, etc and the approximate time and duration of treatment. Just the .1% salt since nitrites appeared. * You can really help us to identify with the concern more accurately if you post some pictures and a short video. I'm not new to goldfish so I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER but bought tiny 11/2 in. lionhead even though I didn't have a cycled tank yet. The guy said that with Stability I should have no problems with such a small fish in a 30 gal. tank. Well I did and I've been doing twice daily water changes for the last month. The little one seemed to be doing ok intil about a week and a half ago when I noticed red blotches on her belly. I had some Kanaplex so mixed it with gel food and fed for six days and spots disappeared. Nitrites had disappeared about three days ago but yesterday I noticed little bubbles on her fins so did a mild salt dip (am afraid to up salt to .3% and knock filter back) last night spots were gone. Today when I got home power had been off for hours and when I tested water Nitites were back to.3 so did a 75% water change about 3 hours ago. Now she has spots on her fins again but this time they are white and kook like Ick. What should I do? Can I up the salt to.3% or will that really knock out the filter or should I just do daily salt dips til Nitrites are gone? ______ So I've been doing twice daily water changes and even with feeding the kanaplex I was finally cycled for about three days when I came home today and the power had been off for hours. The nitrite was at .3 so I did a 75% water change and reading is down to .1 for nitrites. There are spots on her fins again but this time they are white and look like Ick. So what do you suggest I do? Should I raise the salt to .3 % even though there are nitrites again or should I do daily salt dips til nitrites are back to 0? I'm going to watch her closely in case the red spots come back. If they do should I do another round of Kanaplex or switch to the metronidazole in gel food.
