  1. Also his dorsal fin isn't clamped anymore:)
  2. I clean my tank every week and tend to test it here and there to make sure everything is looking good. I tend to keep up with the water changes hence why this whole situation is confusing. The newest thing in my tank is a filter and the algae eater but i've had them for about 2 months now. At the moment my last fish is still eating so I think that's a good sign, he is still bottom sitting though and occasionally moves here and there..He definitely looks better than what the other fish did..He does have a bit of white on his tail fins, but it doesn't look fuzzy or anything.
  3. I do have my own test kit and mentioned that I tested the water at home myself. Nothing seems to be showing up in the tests, but i'm now down to one fish. I've never had a issue with my tank in the last three years and not sure what's going on. I'm still going to continue treating the last fish and hope it's not too late for him.
  4. Recently my tank has seemed to dwindle due to my fish getting sick with something I am not sure of and dying..I have three fish out of four left not including the algae eater and two of the fish aren't looking too good. I've been doing waterchanges more frequently and have started them on meds yesterday, but I think it might be too late since whatever it is seems to be progressing fast..I took my water in to be tested at a local fish store and took pictures in to get advice(I did test it myself at home, but the person recommended that I should bring some water in so they could test it also). Turns out and just like I figured, my water is perfect and safe..No clue what is happening, but I'm hoping for the best..I was wondering though how can I disinfect all of my stuff to make sure this doesn't happen again or if I do decide to restock my tank.
  5. I am possibly looking at rehoming my fish and not sure where to turn to..I've thought about just keeping up with the matience and care for them till something happens, but not sure if that would be the best situation. I have always adored having fish and maybe this is just something that is a passing thought, but I feel as if it'd be easier to rehome them. I really don't want to part with them after spending three years patiently expanding my knowledge and my lovely set up..At this moment in time I have a lot to do between school and work and other things..Anyone one else ever feel this way? I wish I had a friend that was into fish and had the knowledge and wants to take them in for a bit..I'd just feel so bad about giving up on them..I have two fantails one is a common and the other is a calico, one oranda who is orange, and a black moor. I live in southeastern Pa so if anyone is willing to take them on here let me know. It isn't for sure, but just so I have a back up plan. I rather give them to people who will love them and take care of them properly than to someone on craiglist...thanks for your time.
  6. I just ordered one since it is starting to get cold. I just gotta wait for it to arrive:)
  7. I have a 25 or 50 watt heater and I was just curious if it would be able to heat up my 40 gallon breader during the winter. I have a bunch of heaters I got from craigslist and two of them turned out to be vintage, so I'm a bit scared to use them since I'm only home on weekends. I do plan on getting a bigger heater, but I just figured I'd ask.
  8. I most likely will be home every weekend because of work, but I'm sure there will be days I don't work hence why I said every other weekend. I will be teaching her though and I was thinking about getting one of those pill things with the days.
  9. Haha she's 12 and I planned on texting her 24/7 haha.
  10. It's hard to trust people with my fish haha, but I could maybe teach her. I do plan on getting another filter also.
  11. Since I'm leaving for college I'm trying to figure out how to keep my fish healthy while I'm away. I will be home every other weekend to change the water since I won't be far from home and I already have a timer for my lights, but what do I do about food..My sister agreed to feed them and I was just going to get little tupperware containers that are for dressing and measure out the food for her for the week or more so she woudn't overfeed. I also thought about getting a food dispenser, but I've heard horror stories of them emptying all of the food at once..so..my question is haha does anyone reccomend to get a food dispenser..or should I just do it the old fashion way and have someone do it for me even if they aren't 100% reliable..:/ Do a lot of feeders malfunction..?
  12. Well I'm going to be putting the piece in today and just keep an eye on everything.
  13. how long should I wait before testing the water that the drift wood is in?
  14. How long do you boil for...I hear folks say hours. You keep boiling and replacing the water until it stays clear. Removing tannins in the wood is important for maintaining a stable PH. Until you don't see any amber coloring in the water anymore, you should keep on boiling the wood. It took 2 weeks of the soaking method to get all of the tannins out of my giant manzanita branch. Just keep on soaking. Yea when I first soaked them the water was a yellowish color and then the couple times after that it was pretty clear. Check the PH of the water and compare it to your tap water PH before deciding to add it. will do

  16. How do I go about boiling them because I don't think I have a big enough pot..Hence why I put them in a tub of water and let them sit in hot water then dump it out and do it again a few times.
  17. I want to put the driftwood that I got from that guy the other day in my tank, but I'm a little uneasy about it and maybe it's just me overthinking..Has anyone ever had problems with drift wood? I read an article where this lady couldn't figure out why her fish were dying and it turned out the driftwood was making them sick. Should I just go for it since they do seem to be store bought and have been used. I did soak them several times already so they are ready to go in the tank.
  18. I agree. Yea I'm glad I saw the post and once I got home I saw that someone had a 55gal tank with all the equipment for free near by, but I just got my 40 recently and don't have room for another tank sadly.
  19. Yes it is. I honestly might not use any of the hollow ornaments in my goldfish tank, but if I do I will put something over the holes.
  20. That I got or that they had out? I roughly got 20+ items I would say and they had 7 boxes full of things.
  21. Since I will be going away to college this upcoming fall I've been getting things for the tank ready, mainly getting a timer for the light. I actually found the timer in my house because at one point my one aunt kept leaving the straightner on. You pretty much set what time you want whatever it is to turn on and to turn off and then you plug it in and the plug to whatever into it, so far it has been working great. I also just recently saw a post of cl in the free section that someone had a bunch of aquarium stuff on the curb in boxes. It seemed like it was older things and that it has been sitting around for awhile, but I found a bunch of goodies:) I was going to take a filter since they had three but the parts were everywhere and I didn't know what went to what. Here are a few photos of the things I got though. I thought the little creature(can't think of what they are called right now) was cute and same thing with the fish haven. Then I picked up two pieces of drift wood, which I've wanted to get for awhile but they are usually expensive and the castle I thought I could maybe use for a different tank setup. I then got a few rocks( I probably won't put the green ones in my tank) and a few airstones and some air tubing. Also I got a bag full of these things that are plastic but looks like rock that you can choose how you stack them. Another thing was the heaters that they had. I personally haven't seen ones like these and most likely will try them out before I use one in my tank but they didn't look to bad so I thought why not. I'm pretty sure you can't submerge them, which is ok. Also they are made by supreme heetmaster and penn plax. Downfall is they don't have the temp on them like my other heater only low or high with lines in between. They had a bunch of light fixtures and I picked up this one because it did have a bulb already(but either the fixture doesn't work or it's the bulb), but it's not that big of a deal if it doesn't work I just figured I could use it for my 20 gallon long when I set it up. I believe the fixture is 30 inches long and it's made by perfecto. They had a bunch of filter media that wasn't even open and so I grabbed the foam inserts. There are a few things that I got but didn't show which was a few plants and a breeder box. The plants I'm not sure if I will use because parts are breaking off, but I thought that most of the things I got were good finds espcially for free. Thank you for reading and if you have any insight on the heaters let me know and also if you have any ideas on how I should setup the decor in my tank that would also be helpful:)
  22. I concur. These spots can occur on fish with big wen often, and most of the time, they will go away on their own. Keep on eye on it. If it starts to open up (ulcerate) let us know. Thanks:) it actually went away today.
  23. It's just from the airstone. I just put him back in the tank when I took the two first pictures. I originally noticed it yesterday, but it was a pinkish/ whitish color.
  24. I noticed that Chewie has this reddish mark on his wen and I was just wondering if anyone knew what it could be from. He isn't acting weird or anything I just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything serious. I tried getting the best pictures I could.
  25. That fish store had some really goregeous fish.
