  1. If you're going for an eheim classic make sure the taps and media are included, some don't come with and they are expensive to buy separately.
  2. Dang. I got a new impeller. Then during fitting it I broke the ceramix axle rod! Luckily the store had sparer rods but they were a 40 minute drive away! So I put an air stone in the cannister to hopefully minimmise any impact on the bb. What a headache! The new impeller is fitted now and it sounds less rattley, more loud hum. Mine started the same way, after starting up after a water change. Annoying much?

  4. Thanks guys, I'm pretty sure its not air, this is a different type of noise. Oh, and this is a second hand filter, a couple of years old
  5. So, my recently acquired used eheim classic 2213 canister filter has developed something of a... rattle. This much vaunted workhorse isn't invincible after all. I'm pretty sure this is down to the impeller. I have cleaned it, greased it lightly with vaseline and just taken it out hopefully and put it back again, but to no avail. The rattle persists. Is it time for a new impeller? I did notice slight wear on the white plastic bearing at the base, but this is so slight I'm not sure it's the cause. Any comments and advice greatly appreciated- I want that famous eheim near-silence! Thanks, Andrew.
  6. I did see one of my fish nibbling at it, which made me worry in case it was harmful. I haven't noticed any problems with the fish though
  7. I bought a new aqua one 200 watt water heater recently. Since it has been installed in the tank a white 'fuzz' or 'fur' has developed on the rubber suction cups and the rubber cap at the top end where the thermostat adjuster is. What the heck could it be and what should I do? Should I remove the offending bits and clean with bleach? Thanks
  8. I plan to get a water butt soon for my garden- time for a hose to connect my siphon to so I can drain straight into it, then I can store and use old tank water whenever I need! Thanks for the comments and thread link everyone
  9. I just had a brainwave. Probably not a unique or original brainwave, but a brainwave nonetheless. Why throw my water change water down the loo when I could use it to water my plants! Anyone do this?
  10. I have a 45 litre tank exactly the same design as that one, but by aqua one (they must all come from the same manufacturer!) Anyway I have it as a mini amazon planted biotope thingy. Only difference to yours is that it came with a painted black background which really sets the plants off. Aren't the curved front corners great?
  11. look for some eheim substrat pro meda if you can get some, which would be perfect for that filter and is one of the best bio medias around so i hear. I know from my own aquaball that the fluval biomax can be slightly too large and its hard to fit a lot n the media basket.
  12. Is that light an arcadia elipse? I've been thinking of getting the 18watt version for my 12 gallon tetra tank. Would you recommend it?
  13. I like to collect nice rounded stones when I'm at a beach, we have quite a few nice ones here in NI! Thanks for the comments!
  14. hmmm, that will require some clever engineering Captain Findus!
  15. hopefully the gravel vac will do the trck. I left gaps between the rocks.
  16. y'know, if I were more patient I would have carefully painted the back black. I love black backgrounds... but I wasn't patient!!!
  17. Thanks! careful bedding in the gravel, the big one has another propping it too.
  18. Hey everyone, I've recently made a couple of posts about my new 46g tank and aquascape, so I thought I would post a pic: http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u195/bloodfishandmoan/aquarium/P1010905.jpg I just transferred a second eheim filter, an ecco 2234, over from my old tank, so it has bb in it, which also meant I was able to transfer the first fish. He is Awesome Fred, my calico ryukin. Hope you like, I'm definately going for a minimal zen vibe here! Andrew.
  19. So I started out aquascaping today, layed a thin layer of sand, arranged rocks, all looking great. I didn't even finish filling with the first bucket of water into the tank when I decided to rethink. The sand was way too fine and I new it would be a complete mess with fish in there and my buried air curtain going. My solution was to place a thin layer of gravel over the sand. i'm much happier with this. I'll post some pics soon!
  20. thanks for the advice guys. My flter intakes will be maybe 4-5 inches above the sand, which should limit the amount of sand sucked in? I really like the layout above and it's ideally what I want to achieve, but since being on here bare bottoms have grown on me too and my current setup is bare bottom. What to do, what to do...
  21. I'm thinking of using a sand subsrate in my new tank setup. I want to use a thin layer of sand as a base for larger stone cobbles- like this: Am I making a horrible mistake? Does anyone have any experience of goldfish and a sand substrate? Thanks, Andrew.
  22. Oh, oh! Alistairw, how long should I run with the bleach for? And should i change the water before dechlorinating and starting to cycle?
